Hi everyone, this is my first time posting on GradCafe. I’ve been reading a lot of profiles here and finally decided to ask for honest opinions.
I am an international student, currently in the US. I finished my Master’s in Applied Statistics and am planning to apply for Statistics / Biostatistics PhD programs for Fall 2027. Although I have pretty solid research experience and publications from my recent job, my biggest concern is my low undergraduate GPA, especially since I want to move toward more methodological work rather than applied research.
Here is my rough profile:
Type: International, currently residing in the US
Undergraduate: B.S. in Statistics (regional public university)
GPA: 3.3 / 4.0
Graduate: M.S. in Applied Statistics (Top ~20 Statistics program)
GPA: 3.7 / 4.0
GRE: Not taken yet
Research Experience:
Working as a RA at a major medical school research center (full-time 1.5 years)
First author in a journal (published, IF 10)
co-author in a top-tier journal
Courses:
Undergrad
Math: Calculus 1 (B-), Calculus 2 (A), Calculus 3 (A), Discrete math (B), Linear algebra (B+)
Stat: Intro prob (A), Statistical Analysis (A-), Regression (A), Prob models (B+), Prob (A-)
Master's
Intro prob (B), Applied stat (A-), Regression (A), Experimental design (A), Analysis of discrete data (B+), Time series (B-), Intro math statistics (A), Data mining (A) and statistical consulting courses (both A)
My Primary Concerns:
Undergrad GPA: It’s significantly lower than the average for top programs. Does a Master’s GPA and 1.5 years of professional research at a top med school compensate for this?
Transition to Methodology: My publications are in applied journals. I want to pivot to Bayesian & Causal Inference methodology (I used those methods in my pubs but they were applied as existing tools).
Questions:
Realistically, how do you evaluate my chances for Biostatistics PhD at University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) and other similar-level programs (top 20–40 range in Statistics/Biostatistics)?
Any advice on how to strengthen my profile further? (should I take GRE? Any specific coursework I should consider before applying? How to best address the undergrad GPA in the SOP?)
