  1. Thanks. How did you know what they offered for the second year? I have emailed to ask if the scholarship is the same for the second year but they have not replied.

seahawk2k: the letter stated the scholarship amount for both the first and the second year.

  2. What do you consider a little bit? (sorry for being nosy :)

saeahawk2k: they offered $6K for the first year, and $3K for the second year. Considering the tuition, I doubt it is going to make me chose Duke over Berkeley, which is much more affordable due to in-state tuition and an additional (modest) fellowship.

  3. Hi there,

I just received this e-mail from GPPI.

Greetings and congratulations from the Georgetown Public Policy Institute (GPPI) Office of Admissions. I am pleased to inform you the GPPI Admissions Committee has reviewed your application and will recommend to the Dean of the Georgetown Graduate School of Arts & Sciences you be admitted to GPPI for the Fall 2011 semester. Since we are part of the Georgetown Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, they need to affirm our decision. You will receive an official letter of admission shortly thereafter.

In your official admissions letter, there will be detailed information on need-based financial aid, the GPPI Open Houses, and regional receptions as briefly described below. In addition, the Admitted Students’ website will be active in the next couple of weeks and will contain updated admitted student event and enrollment information.

  4. I called them and they waived the TOEFL for me since I graduated from an American university and took the GRE. You can also follow foodlover28's advice and enter English as your native language. That should dissolve the problem. Good Luck!

The office was closed yesterday for the holiday break, but I called this morning. If anyone else is having this problem-- the easiest way is to put English as a native language if you are bilingual. If not, then you can simply put down today's date for the test dates and 1 for all the other blanks.

  5. Hi,

I had a similar problem with TOEFL and IELTS. My problem was based on the grounds that I am a foreign national and they require the TOEFL or IELTS from anyone who is not a native English speaker (unlike other schools) Not sure why it wants the GMAT, did you not take the GRE or are you applying for the joint MBA program?

I would try calling and e-mailing the office, I am sure they reopen before the deadline.

    Best of luck!

  6. Nimesis, I have not received any e-mails from Berkeley either. Now that I think about it, I am starting to worry since I did not check in with them either. For some reason I just assume that the programs will notify one when items are missing. I just called HKS because a couple things were noted as incomplete (even though they are not) and they said to check back later since they are still catching up with all the applications. That said, I almost feel like I am adding more work to the admissions offices by calling instead of letting them figure out what is missing at the end.

Anyone have more insight on this?

Did anyone who applied to Berkeley get any kind of email over the past week or so confirming receipt of all application materials? I was told by the admissions office they would be sending out confirmation emails over the "next few weeks", and that was on December 1st.

  7. I know this is old, but I submitted HKS and did Wagner before the Reynolds deadline. Now onto scholarship essays for HKS!

    Crumpets,

I only looked briefly at HKS's scholarship e-mail. Looked a bit overwhelming. Did you figure out yet which of those we automatically will be considered as part of our application and which require separate applications?

  8. Hi there,

First of all, thanks to all these great contributions. This thread is very informative and reminded me that I should apply to Sanford's program. But when I checked their website once again, I remembered why I didn't have Sanford's MPP on my list...due to the average age of 22-27 (posted on their website). Without intention to offend the younger individuals, I would prefer to be in a program composed of more experienced students.

Does anyone have first-hand experience how representative this statistic is? Am I being unfair and narrow-minded about the age thing? This is a great forum and feedback is much appreciated.

    Thanks!

  9. jb08, not sure if it makes you feel better, but my verbal GRE score is way below yours (500). Granted, I am not a native English speaker but 570 is not all that bad.

With a 5.0 AWA score I would not worry too much. For MPP/MPA programs, the quantitative score is more important anyway. Plus, the admissions committee will see your writing skills in the personal statement, so as long as you express yourself clearly, you should be just fine.

I was curious why you did not apply to GSPP. No interest in the West Coast or is it program related?

    Best of luck to you!

Program Applied To(MPA, MPP, IR, etc.): MPP and some MPA

Schools Applied To: U Chicago Harris, U Michigan Ford, IU SPEA, Carnegie Mellon Heinz, GWU Trachtenberg, NYU Wagner, American SPA

    Schools Admitted To: None yet

    Schools Rejected From: None yet

Still Waiting: all of the above

Undergraduate institution: Jesuit University in Midwest

    Undergraduate GPA: 3.65

Last 60 hours of Undergraduate GPA (if applicable): 3.75

    Undergraduate Major: Political Science

    GRE Quantitative Score: 780 (89%)

GRE Verbal Score: 570 (80%) - this may be the lowest I've seen on these boards this year, I'm hoping my Quant and AW scores will help offset this a little?

    GRE AW Score: 5.0

Years Out of Undergrad (if applicable): 2

    Years of Work Experience: 2

Describe Relevant Work Experience: 2 years Americorps and very recently began working in a low-level position at a nonprofit related to the field I want to study

Strength of SOP (be honest, describe the process, etc): I think it's strong. My passion about the field is clear, I think I have some trouble distinguishing why I want to study at particular schools/programs

Strength of LOR (be honest, describe the process, etc): My recommendations from supervisors will be strong. I worry that my academic recommendations wont be stellar only b/c I didn't form relationships with professors during undergrad. My recommenders don't know me very well aside from reading my Statement and knowing I did well in their classes.

I'm also concerned b/c I have practically no Quant bakground. I took a Stats class as a freshman and did very well but never took any other math or econ b/c it wasn't required. I did okay on Quant GRE, but I doubt that will be enough to make up for my lack of coursework.

  10. Newbielookingfroadvice, i agree with yeahgradschool and ahab. your banking experience is a big asset that will certainly be in your favor. I worked in marketing and media planning before, which has little to nothing to do with my grad school degree. I spoke to deans and admissions about that and they said it's not a bad thing at all, quite the opposite. I actually think that that's what grad school is often about. Many opt for grad school to change careers and that is what makes the classroom so diverse and more rounded. I hope you still have time to adjust your statements so that you can more proudly speak about your experience. After all, you are getting the MPP in order to get into the non-profit environment (if I read your stats right). If you already had that experience the MPP wouldn't make sense. Good Luck! I am sure you will get accepted to most of not all the schools you selected. BTW, Georgetown MPP has an online chat starting in 20 minutes.

  11. Program Applied To (MPA, MPP, IR, etc.): MPP, MA, MEM

Schools Applied To: UC Berkeley Goldman School (MPP), HKS (MPP), YALE FES (MEM), Stanford IPS (MA), Fletcher (MALD) – accepted (early admissions, no funding offer yet, Duke (MEM), SAIS ERE (MA), maybe Georgetown (MSFS)

    Schools Admitted To: Fletcher

    Schools Rejected From: none yet

Still Waiting: UCB Goldman School, HKS, YALE FES, Stanford IPS, Duke, SAIS ERE, Georgetown

Undergraduate institution: German University (first 2 years), CA State School (last 2 years)

    Undergraduate GPA: 3.95

Last 60 hours of Undergraduate GPA (if applicable): 3.95

    Undergraduate Major: International Relations

    GRE Quantitative Score: 740

    GRE Verbal Score: 500

    GRE AW Score: 4.5

Years Out of Undergrad (if applicable): 3

Years of Work Experience: 6 years full time (2 in Germany, 4 in the U.S.), 5 years part time during school

Describe Relevant Work Experience: corporate marketing, consulting, translation

Strength of SOP (be honest, describe the process, etc): I spent hours (literally at least a hundred hours) revising my statement and customizing it to each program, my earlier statements could have been better if I did not submit them so early (I just wanted them out of the way)

Strength of LOR (be honest, describe the process, etc): I only got to read one of them, which was very nice and flattering. Not sure about the two academic statements, but I’d assume they are good since both profs were impressed with my academic performance

Question: Did anyone hear from Fletcher AND their financial decisions? Seems like those go out separately and I was wondering when to expect the scholarship distribution.
