  1. It looks like notifications of rejections at Virginia social psych have started to be posted. My questions is: Who here has yet to hear anything from UVA social psych yet? (Supposedly, some people were "notified" of their rejection simply by checking their online application. So, you might want to double check there before posting here.) I am one that has yet to hear anything -- at least yet to hear anything directly from the department -- no invite, no waitlist, no rejection. Like I said before, I know unofficially that I am more than likely out at UVA, via information passed from my POI at UVA to one of my current professors. However, supposedly, even though my professor noted that it looked like I was out, he also said that my POI at UVA had very positive things to say about my application. Might there be an unofficial second-tier waitlist? Even if there was such a thing, and even if I am on it, I am not holding my breath. (I take it that it is highly unlikely to come off of an unofficial second-tier waitlist. So, even if I was on such a thing, I still take it that I am more than likely out of the running.) And a follow question: To those who have been notified of rejection, who was your POI? And how were you notified?
  2. It is a sign that you are among a (probably relatively small) pool of applicants still being considered. However, from the sounds of it, I don't think this necessarily means you should be too excited yet. Yes, it is a sign that you are still in the running after a round (rounds?) of cuts, but it does not necessarily mean you are (or are going to make it to) the final shortlist.
  3. RE: USC

Hi, the only way I know is on the ApplyYourself website. However, applications have not finished being processed, so you probably won't see a decision on ApplyYourself for another two or three weeks.

  4. My primary POI is Pizarro. However, I did list Gilovich and Dunning as POIs also.
  5. Hi, I applied to mostly social psych programs. However, I did apply to one cognitive program, Emory. Anyone else here apply to Emory? Has anyone heard from Emory?
  6. Anyone have any information about Cornell (social), Maryland (social), or Emory (cognition and development)?
  7. Hi, Well, I will be interviewing at Brown in a few weeks, and if I get in, I imagine I will probably end up choosing Brown. I will be looking for safe, family-friendly neighborhoods that are in a very good school district (elementary) and are convenient to Brown either by bike or public transportation. I would like to be away from large undergraduate populations. If possible, I would like to be walking distance to some shopping and restaurants, but this is less important than the other requirements. My family will be looking for a 2 or (preferably) 3 bedroom for around $800-1100 a month. If need be, we could probably go as high as $1300 a month, but that would really, really be pushing it. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  8. Let's just say that someone I know who also knows some of my POIs was willing to check on my standings for me.
  9. Received some second-hand insider information, and it looks like I am out at Virginia (if that was not obvious already!) and at Yale. For Yale, I was told that my application made it down to the next-to-last-cut-before-the-short-list, but, in that next-to-last-cut pile, some applicants had slightly better research matches, so I didn't make it to the final short list. If you have not heard from Yale yet, do not panic. As far as I know, they have not officially started contacting people yet. (And just FYI, though I applied to mainly social psych programs, I actually applied to the development track at Yale.) Also, things are not looking so great for me at BC. As it turns out my POI is preferring a specific set of skills, some of which I don't have. Nonetheless, my POI recognizes that my application in many regards is "superior" and that I am "still in consideration." So, Boston College -- no word, looking 50/50 at best for being shortlisted Brown -- invite to interview day!!! Cornell - no word, still hopeful Emory - no word, still hopeful Harvard - no word, fear I might be in a similar situation as I am in at BC Maryland - no word, still hopeful USC - phone interview, no official word of anything more yetl Virginia - no official word, but probably out Yale - no official word, but probably out
  10. obviously, i meant prospective's day, not perspectives day ... Oh, and thanks for all the congrats!
  11. Just received a phone call from my POI at Brown. I have been invited to interview/perspectives day on Feb. 11. Brown is probably my first choice, so this is very, very exciting!
  12. Keep your head up! It is still very early in the process. I think many of us either haven't heard from anywhere yet or have only heard from a single program. Give it a few more weeks before you start to let despair set in.
  13. If you want federal student loans, then, yes, you will need to fill out the FAFSA.
  14. I applied to Cornell (Pizarro, Dunning, Ferguson). I have not heard anything yet. I am also in the same boat as you re: USC. I had a Skype interview but have not heard anything official yet. However, I also applied to BC and still have not heard anything from them. Do you mind sharing who your POI(s) is(are)? You can PM me this information, if you are willing to share and don't feel comfortable posting it publicly.
  15. Congrats! Do you mind sharing when you were notified and who your POI was (either on this forum or via PM)? Thanks!
  16. Congrats on the Duke interview! Your and my lists have a little bit of overlap: USC, BC, and UVa. I have had an informal phone interview with one of my POIs at USC. As far as I know, no official decisions have been made at USC yet. There has also been some reports of wait list notifications at UVa. I am unaware of any official acceptance offers, though. Either way, I haven't heard anything from UVa yet. Also, I haven't heard anything from BC yet, but I also don't know of any activity coming out of BC yet. Well, good luck!
  17. Congrats on the interview with FSU! May an acceptance soon find its way to your inbox.
  18. Correction to my post above: The second-hand report was not an acceptance at UVa; it was a waitlist. So, as of this moment, I know of no confirmed offers of admission to UVa social psych. Of course, with only 3 acceptances in existence, there is no reason to think that we would necessary hear about any of them.
  19. Congrats! Just to get on the waitlist at somewhere like UVa is quite an achievement! Hopefully, you receive an acceptance from UVa before it is all said and done (either that, or you get an offer of admissions from a comparably strong program). If you don't mind, could you PM the name of your POI? Thanks!
  20. O.o So, I just noticed someone posted a waitlist for UVa's social psych program. Plus, there was a second-hand report of an acceptance not too long ago. Panic time?! I don't know. As mentioned above, a grad student at UVa mentioned that some of the notifications may be slow in coming due to various factors. I guess it just depends on, at least in part, who your POI is. Does anyone have any information regarding which UVa social psych POIs have contacted people?
  21. With permission, I am passing along information that was shared with me by a current graduate student at Virginia: "What I do know is that A) Recruiting Day (for all areas) is on February 11th, and that the SPSP is on Jan 27-30th, so there might be some delayed contact for social faculty members. ... I would try not to be concerned if you're not contacted within the next couple weeks, though. Last year, the social area was slow on the uptake, and only half of my cohort visited during recruiting day. The other half visited much later, in March."
  22. I am one of the folks who applied to USC and have been lucky enough to receive an interview. Though, I don't plan on being a researcher of statistics and methodology (as in someone who publishes primarily articles about stats and methodology), I am a huge stats person, so knowing that there are a few big time stats/methodology people there is a big plus.
  23. Thanks. Now let's just hope this "interview" turns into my first acceptance ... heck, for the time being, I will even take a wait list. Congrats! I hope all goes well for you.
