I've been accepted to UW and will be visiting next week. I'm very interested in the program and I have heard great things about the city. My main concern though is that I won't be able to have a car while I am there. How good is the public transportation there? Does it run 24 hours? I'll also have just one afternoon/evening to see the city. Where should I go if I have only from about 230pm onwards in one evening to explore?
  2. I think its possible to live on $13K. I currently live in a 3 bdrm house where the total rent is $850 and my share of bills (cable/internet/electric/gas) are about $85 in the winter and $110 in the summer. So thats $368-393 a month for a place to live and I'm sure you could live on $100 a week or less for groceries if you do it right. But, in college station you will almost certainly need a car to get around so thats another cost to consider.
  3. I agree with ielah, I'm finishing up my undergrad and 5th(!) year here and the difference between the cultures in grad students and undergrads is very different. I would say its not as bad as hornedfrogmeg (from TCU I assume) makes it sound. The student body is also large enough (almost 50,000) that you will find all types if you look hard enough, even if the overall stereotype is very conservative. I've also noticed every year seeming a little more diverse than the last, and I think each incoming class is more liberal than the last (maybe not by much, but I believe it is true). I've noticed that you are doing political science and would probably be applying to the Bush School of Government, that department is housed in a building far from the main part of campus (right next to the Bush Presidential Library), which means while you're on campus, you'd only be dealing with people in the polisci and econ departments. The little area by the library is actually very pretty, much nicer than the rest of campus. There isn't much to do here except drink and the music scene is mostly Texas country and local student rock bands. Northgate is not a bad little area of bars and restaurants, but not your typical "downtown." You might also want to check out some places in downtown Bryan (The bar Revolutions comes to mind) as it tends to be a little more older and some places more "liberal" crowd. Like ielah, I've enjoyed my time here but I'm ready to leave, just look at the schools I'm applying too...most are more liberal cities than college station! Downtown Austin and Houston are a 90 minute drive away (the outskirts even less) if you need a city and both have good cultural stuff (Austin is the "live music capital" of the world, Houston has great theaters and museums) so its really not that bad. Also, google MSC OPAS, we do get a few broadway type plays every year coming through. Anyways, if you really like the program I'm sure you would be fine. I would just imagine it would be bit different than what you are used to.

I received an acceptance to UCSC last week and I was wondering what the atmosphere was like in the city, on campus, and the area in general. How easy is it to get to San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland from here? What is the relative cost of living? Any other information about the school or city would be appreciated! Thanks!

Anyone have any comments on what areas of the town would be a good place to look for an apartment? I would prefer to be within a 10 min bike ride/15 min walk from campus (specifically the econ department if you are really familiar with the area!) Thanks!

I've just been accepted to UC-Davis for PhD economics. I was wondering if anyone else had any feedback on living in Davis. How easy is it to get into Sacremento or drive to San Francisco? What types of things are there to do in the area? Is there some good outdoors type stuff? Thank you!
  7. Does anyone have any comments on what it is like living in Riverside or what the student life is like at UCR? I was accepted to the Economics program there and I am wondering what life would be like as a grad student. Thanks!
