  1. I heard back last week with a 'yes'! Have you heard anything since you posted this? And if you get funding, are you planning on going??
  2. I'm also waiting--nothing so far. I haven't emailed/called anyone and am a little puzzled as to what's up. People were posting on the results page that they got rejected via standard mass email, but we were apparently excluded from that. Hm... Anyone else know anything?
  3. Great recommendations, especially Wacquant! What, if you don't mind me asking, are you interested in focusing on for your grad work?
  4. I'm such a groupie/nerd, but every time I hear about people's work being complemented by sociological 'superstars' like Wuthnow I am jealous. Even if you don't get in, Robert Wuthnow thought your work was interesting! Good luck with the waiting list!
  5. Yikes, two in the same day is rough. Have you heard any acceptances? I was rejected rather unsurprisingly by Yale yesterday.
  6. So is it safe to say that having not heard anything from NYU=rejection?
  7. Sounds like bad news for those who haven't heard....
  8. Congrats on your great profile and acceptances to such great schools!
  9. I mean, perhaps you were owed something. It seems ridiculous to think that you got all of those accolades without working your ass of for them... Either way it sucks. Do you have the option of staying in your current program to do a PhD?

    Rutgers

Thanks. There are only two results posted on the results board this year (both for interviews, and one who said they withdrew their app), and looking at last year, they did a lot of admits at the beginning of March, so I'm not panicking... yet.
  11. NYU is also one of my top choices, so I'm hoping that the effort I made to contact a professor wasn't in vain. Although now that I think about it, his response was quite hands-off, as he basically said "we'll talk once you're admitted." Hm...

    Rutgers

I applied as well, but haven't heard anything. I hope that doesn't mean that I'm out... Do you know if they are interviewing everyone?? And how did your interview go? Yikes... I can't take all of this anxiety...
  13. I have just felt the sour sting of rejection from UC Santa Cruz. Although not my top choice, it was in the middle of my rankings. I talked to a prof before I applied who said that being an out-of-state student might hurt me because we cost them more to fund, so perhaps that played into it. It kind of sucks either way though.Off to the beer....

    Acceptances

I just started posting recently too--it's nice to finally feel connected to others in the same position I am. Congrats on your acceptances! What are your interests, as those are all great, diverse programs?
  15. There's a big blogging sociology contingent that I've just stumbled upon recently. Some of my favorites are: Orgtheory (orgtheory.wordpress.com) A (Budding) Sociologist's Commonplace Book (asociologist.wordpress.com) Scatterplot (scatter.wordpress.com) They all have a bunch of links on their pages to other soc blogs as well. My girlfriend and I have also just started a blog (sometimes) related to sociology. Check us out if you so desire. (socialscientistsinakitchen.wordpress.com)
  16. Hi everybody! I got an acceptance email this evening from the University of Kansas for their sociology program! No word on funding yet, but they said the visit days are Feb 17 and 18. It's my first one of the season, and I'm very excited... 1 for 1 so far! (With 5 more yet to hear...) Let's try and keep this thread going as a running record of everyone's acceptances so we'll know where to look for good news as soon as we log on! Anyone else have any early acceptances??
  17. hoobers' explanation was very good, I think. That paper by Abend is really interesting as well. I am also interested in Social Theory (1, 2, AND 3 in fact) so I had to do some serious scouring for applicable programs. I would also add Yale's program to the list, as Jeffrey Alexander's work has been hugely important, if controversial, over the past few decades. The good part is that if you like to use theory as a sort of intellectual anchor for your own work, there seems to be a definite place for that in certain journals (regressions and network analysis are still the kinds of things that dominate 'top' journals like ASR and AJS). More than anything, I think that solidly original, well-thought-out, and carefully executed research is what will get you noticed in the more theory-friendly corners of sociology. Good luck stjh87! Your ideas sound really interesting.
  18. Great news, great news!! I hope everyone else will be posting equally jubilant posts in the coming weeks, myself included! Anyone else have any early acceptances??
  19. So, after about 5 months of lurking, I'd like to say hello! I'm not sure why it took me so long to officially join up, but better late than never. (And just in time to join in the month-plus-long therapy session of waiting to hear from schools...) Let me introduce myself: I'm a December '09 undergraduate, with a double major in sociology and philosophy. I'm mainly interested in the sociology of culture, knowledge and stratification with a weakness for high-minded (and occasionally low-minded) theory inherited from my philosophy days. As far as applications go, I'm applying to programs mainly in the northeast (though also one UC and a midwestern school), as my girlfriend and I have decided to undertake the graduate school odyssey together (she's doing anthropology) and the northeast offers the most schools within commutable distances. I'm applying to a couple of top-20s (one of which is an ivy), a top-30 and three top-50s for a total of 6 schools. So, I want to invite all of the lurkers out there to join up and join in. Introduce yourselves! It's quite liberating... Also, I want to give a shout out to jacib and Roll Right, as their (your) comments have been extremely helpful in the lead-up to this madness. Thanks again. Okay, back to touching up my last couple SOPs. (Did I mention I'm a procrastinator?)
