  1. I haven't...but I met quite a few people who went for interviews at Duke...so I'm pretty sure its rejection. Duke admission process does work pretty differently...basically professors choose students and contact them....if there is not a perfect match (according to the professors), they you are out regardless of your qualifications...its your research interests and the right match with a professor that gets you in...
  2. Nrets: I just noted that all of your rejections so far are from California schools...I met someone who was interviewed at JHU and GA Tech but were rejected at Berkely, another interviewed for MIT-Harvard HST program, JHU, GA Tech, Berkely but rejected from Stanford....also in general I met many people who got into top schools but rejected from Berkely and Stanford...I just feel like it is generally a tough year for applications, and more so for California schools..are you a resident of California? If not, that may explain your rejections...
  3. The_Student: Thanks! yea I'm most probably going there too..I haven't heard from Duke or Carnegie Mellon (weird, It wasn't even one of my top choices!!)....I would have liked to have heard from Duke...but I guess it is a tough year for foreign applicants...I'm just glad that GA Tech didn't seem to have such qualms regarding funding for International students...I feel very fortunate to have been accepted there. I'm thinking about the joint BME program with Emroy as well. rbme/name/andgc: have you guys decided where you are going yet?
  4. Got into GA Tech...I am so excited, exhausted and more than anything...relieved....finally....I am speaking while I breathe normally...he he...and I can't remember the last time I was able to do it .. The_Student: so you are going to GA Tech right?...I haven't heard anything from Duke yet...I'm going to assume that is a no....I haven't told yes to GA Tech yet, but I probably will pretty soon...how about you? Hey are you going to do the BME or the bioE?
  5. COULD we have chosen a worse year to apply?? seriously, If I had known that the economy is going to tank and was going to take a toll on funding in schools, I would hot have applied this year...especially being a foreign student!! oh btw, onetwo and Dove: fyi, I spoke with Karen stephens today and she told me that what UC Irvine's going to have this weekend is not a recruitment weekend and its a visitation weekend and thats the only one they have. So If you didn't receive an acceptance until now, you are probably rejected...I can't believe that I didn't get an acceptance from UC Irvine when I was invited to GA Tech....it just seems bizarre....I was counting on UCI as a sure thing!! anyways, I guess the budget cuts kind of explain that...especially for a foreign student...and this being a california school...it kind of sucks...but what can you do...
  6. andgc: so you'll be in Atlanta this Sunday too? There are about 4 people from this forum that will be there...with you, it'd be 5...so are you done with the JHU interviews? And I think you are right about the california schools...that explains why I haven't heard from UC Irvine yet when I was sure that I'd get in there...and the funding situation matters more in my case coz I"m an International student...I figure that I'm probably going to be rejected there...oh well...
  7. Congrats daddys_girl!! That's great news....and a straight acceptance at that...now you can breath normally I wish I'd hear back from UCI and CMU...I'm beginning to think that they are going to be rejections...which I don't understand...I was sure I'd get an invite from both..oh well.... oh btw guys...what's the deal with Duke? according to fenguin from the BME 2009 thread, they should have had 2 recruitment weekends by now and there should be one on March.....so that's a rejection too right? I just wish they'd let us know ....
  8. onetwo: I am waiting to hear from UC Irvine too.... I don't know whats taking them so long? there was an acceptance early in Feb 5th...and then again yesterday....the acceptances seem so spread out... Dove: you got an acceptance from UCI right? Is there a recruitment event or an open house at all?
  9. rbme: thanks for that piece of information...its good to know that...and name: I guess it makes sense that they accept that many if 28 were to enroll... Its probably going to depend on how many PIs are going to be able to fund students....etc..In any case, let's keep our hopes up!! good luck to all 3 of you and will see you March 8th!
  10. Oh man!!! Only 8 the year before?? well, I hope they accept at least about 25 or so this year...but with the funding crisis and all that., I wonder if they'd cut down the number even more...oh well...all we can hope at this point is hope, I guess!!
  11. The_Student: Thanks for the wishes...yes I guess will see each other in Atlanta! I'll send you a PM later on...Did you find out anything about the chances of being admitted after the interviews from anyone?? Any statistics on how many get acceptances after the interviews? I'm very nervous about the interviews... Also, do any of you know if Carnegie mellon sent out invites for BME yet? Since no one posting on this forum seems to have applied there for BME, I thought one of you guys might have friends who applied there?? This not knowing is killing me...at least if I know that some one has heard back, I would know what to expect...let me know if you guys know anything!!
  12. Thanks guys!! It does feel good to hear back!! Its March 8-10.. looks like that's the only recruitment event they have!!
  13. Finally, my firstr Interview Invitation!!! I don't think I've ever been happier to see a new email in my inbox....I had almost prepared for a rejection from GA Tech...it suprised me to see an invite.... Applied: JHU, WUSTL, GA Tech, Duke, CMU, UCI Interview: Georgia Tech Rejected: Johns Hopkins University, Washington University in St. Louis
  14. ealkjhljha: I hear you!! you have one acceptance though...I have none and only bad news so far....I'm getting really really worried at the prospect of not getting in anywhere... Applied: JHU, WUSTL, GA Tech, Duke, CMU, UCI Rejected: Johns Hopkins University, Washington University in St. Louis
  15. I can't believe how slow the last week was and this week seems equally slow so far....what is going on?? Are all the invites given out from all BME schools??? I am getting really nervous now...I've given up on Duke...I just hope and pray that I hear from Carnegie Mellon and UC Irvine...this waiting and stress are beginning to affect my mental and physical health in not a good way...lol!! Tati: Congrats on the UMD accept!! Applied: GA Tech, John Hopkins, Duke, WUSTL, UC Irvine, Carnegie Mellon Accepted: Denied: Johns Hopkins, WUSTL, (and pretty sure I'm rejected in GA Tech)
  16. Hey Dove: When did you hear from UC Irvine? is it recently or a while ago? I haven't heard back from UC Irvine yet and I was really counting on it!!! Do you know if they are done sending invites??
  17. daddys_girl: At least you applied to 9...I'm feeling so stupid right now for only having applied to 6!! Among them 3 in the top 5!! I am just hoping Carnegie mellon lets me know something.....I feel sooooo tired and anxious all the time...the past few months might have been the most depressing months of my whole life!!!
  18. Anyone else not heard from anywhere except for rejections??? I've been rejected from JHU and Washington University in St. Louis so far. I called GA Tech and they said that the invites have been sent out to the top students and the final decisions will be made by March 15th. So, if you didn't receive an invitation for the recruitment even during March 8-10, then you are most likely out. They may send some acceptances to International students living outside of US after the recruitment weekend. She did say that they meet every week, but most of the invitations have been sent out. My application has been reviewed and I didn't make it to the top list...so even though she didn't say it flat out, I"m rejected...So now all I have left is Duke, UC Irvine and Carnegie mellon. Do any of you know if Carnegie mellon has extended invitations? I know there was an acceptance from UC Irvine early february. Do anyone else know if there have been other acceptances? I'm beginning to lose hope that I'll get into even one program now...I'm not sure what I'll do If I don't get in anywhere!!! Accepted: Rejected: JHU, WashU, most likely GA Tech Waiting: Duke, Carnegie Mellon, UC Irvine
  19. Hey Tati: I agree....all the schools I applied to were pretty open to physical science and biology majors with sufficient mathematics background.....now I"m beginning to have second thoughts about it...maybe when you have such a huge number of engineering majors applying, they tend to favor engineering background at that point?...who knows...but there were schools that flat out refused to accept non-engineering majors...so the ones that didn't say that have got to be accepting at least a few non-engineering majors right???? but how few is the critical question I guess....anyways...good luck to you too...let's keep our fingers crossed!!
  20. fenguin: Sorry about the rejection from HST...but like you said, you do have some amazing schools lined for interviews and acceptances....good luck on your interviews!! I have a quick question for you...when you say UW, do you mean University of Washington?
  21. Hey name and slickwillbo: Do you guys know if the March 8-10 the only recruitment weekend GA Tech has?
  22. the_student: I think some universities kind of do the rolling admissions process....I know it seems strange and I have no idea how they manage to controll that process...maybe they eliminate more after interviews in those schools?? So you probably still have a good chance of getting an invite, don't you think? So here's some interesting piece of news....I just got a generic email from the graduate coordinator at Washington University in St. Louis. It says that the admission decision will be available on 2/11/09 on the website. That has to be a rejection right? I mean, if its an invite, I wouldn't be asked to check the website in 2 days....that would be absurd....so my question is, why the hell not just tell me already??? or not say anything and just send me a freaking email with the rejection in 2 days...now you have me wait another torturous 2 days...for what?? it feels like a cruel joke!!
  23. I went to undergrad for chemistry and biochemistry at the U of MN. I have a math minor, but no engineering classes. So I had to be selective about the schools I applied to and my chances are arleady slim because of that, I think. I just hope that I get into at least one program....I've only received one rejection (JHU). But, since I am not invited to GA Tech yet, i'm probably out there too. I am beginning to lose it!!!
  24. Hey Name: thanks for the info! So according to what you said, they will send out the rejections after they meet again, and that is IF they meet again.....and if they are not meeting again, they are probably just holding out on sending out rejections for a little bit....I guess I should have some kind of an answer by the end of this week...and if not I'll probably know its a rejection...its just that the waiting is sooo horrible!! I applied to Duke too and looks like no one's heard anything from Duke yet...do you know if they are usually late in getting back than other schools??
  25. the_student : congrats on the GA Tech invite....you are an international student right? where did you go to undergrad in the US?
