  1. mine's Professor Talih. read this http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/graduateadmissions/new-graduate-students
  2. Who is your advisor? I don't know about mine yet, I am picking the Epi track.
  3. Thank you both of you. My undergraduate grades are not so great due to life circumstances and immaturity. I never went to class or studied, only crammed. I have calculus, linear algebra, and diff eq, but the grades are A, C, A, C+, D respectively. I also have probability theory, math statistics and applied prob and stat, with grades C+, A, B. Three solutions I can think of: 1) Is it alright if I supplement them with the Math GRE? 2) Or should I repeat coursework? 3) What if I do a MPH in Biostatistics first (no calculus) and get good grades there? What kind of programming language is recommended. Does R count? My GRE quant. is only 750, first time taken. I do have a passion for biostatistics (and health in general) as a chronic, genetic disease has affected me and my family. I am fairly intelligent, but I am scared that my math is too weak. Thanks.
  4. I have a bachelor's in applied mathematics - no real analysis course taken. What would I need to do to get into a decent MS Biostatistics program and from there, maybe a PhD program?
  5. Got accepted to Hunter college's MPH Epi and Bios program today.
  6. My letters are due in 10 days and I don't know how to remind my recommenders. Should I send them a short e-mail saying... ? What should I say? Should I resend the online submission e-mail? Should I send that and an e-mail? Thanks
  7. I've been out of college for 4 years. I have one other professor writing a letter and a former employer. Is he saying that he does not want to write the recommendation and is simply being polite? Also, the applyyourself online application will ask him for his recommendation "strongly recommend"/"recommend"/"recommend with reservation"/"do not recommend." What is his likely choice? I've had him for 3 classes 1 A, 2 B's. Thanks for the replies.
  8. I asked for a letter of recommendation by e-mail and the Professor replied saying that there isn't much he can write, if anything, beyond a description of the class I took and the grade I received and asked for the info to be sent over. Is this good/bad? Is he going to give me a subtle "non-recommendation?" What would you do in this situation?
  9. You are the actuarial student. This is your job. This is only my interpretation: Those grades (from 2009 and on), are not "past mistakes." They are recent. Yes, you received B's in some advanced courses, but the grades seem to go from A's to B's and C's as the courses get harder. Is there a particular reason you got C's in Linear and Probability? You are trying to study Actuarial Science - probability is sort of the foundation. Have you taken a theory of stats. course yet? Also, scoring a 770Q means less if you aren't carrying that aptitude over into coursework. And you were a math teacher? It says to me that you should be doing better in coursework. If you are still taking some classes, it would look good to show some recent A's in tough classes. Personally, I think there is more potential in you with a 770Q. You'll have many more opportunities to demonstrate superior ability. Take advantage and keep passing the professionl actuarial exams. Keep working hard. Hope you pass your exam with a high score (don't know if you can put your score on your resume or grad app). Good luck.
  10. The Powerprep II software will give you an idea of how the new test is. You can get it from the ETS website. Verbal ability is still tested on the new exam, and vocabulary will still show up but in questions where the context is given. Do you know where you current weaknesses are? Analogies, antonyms, sentence completion, reading comprehension? software: http://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/prepare/powerprep2/download paper based: http://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/practice_book_GRE_pb_revised_general_test.pdf
  11. I found the GRE Revised exam given in the new PowerPrep software to be similar in difficulty to the current GRE. The math actually seemed a bit easier. The verbal still contained lots of juicy vocabulary. The software gives your score on the current scale of 200-800 instead of the new 130-170. It says it does this so you can compare your score on the new test to your old scores on the old test. It gave my verbal score in the range of 510-610 It gave my quant score in the range of 750-800 No surprises. I don't see what all the fuss is about with "Oh my God, the test is entirely different." I'm sure some groups of people will have different testing experiences with the old and new formats, but overall, eh.
  12. There are two tests in the software, but I've read that you will get different questions if you take either test more than once. Anyone know how many times you can take them?
