  1. We have cats, so I've never personally made an inquiry about breed restrictions, but I've seen people walking great danes and American bulldogs, so I'd assume size isn't a problem. I usually drive to campus every day, and since my major has its main building on the periphery of campus it was feasible for me to get a parking pass for a lot nearby. This costs me about the same amount as parking did when I lived nearer campus (~400 dollars), so I did not mind.
  2. Hmm, dollar for dollar, network for network, I would say the best you can do for your silicon valley money is Stanford first and then UIUC (Having an in to the "Paypal Mafia" at the intersection of Stanford/UIUC would probably get you farther than being first cousins with Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg) second pretty close to Harvard
  3. I think you'll find that the rates for couples housing on campus are basically outrageous. You can find better living arrangements for cheaper off campus if my research is correct (I'm seeing 18,324 or 1527 per month for the cheapest couples on campus -- you can get a fairly nice 1BR in Mountain View, Sunnyvale, etc for this price and can get something closer to 1000-1200 if you're vigilant, I think) Surely you will be able to find work (potentially making a good deal of money) over the summer with a company in the area.
  4. I live at Town and Country. The area is not bad at all. Most of the people who live here are younger professional types and upper-level undergrads/grads. It's a bit out of the way if you don't have a car (the bus doesn't run out here on weekends), but other than that, I'd recommend it pretty highly
  5. Unfortunately, I can't speak to that very competently as I'm not much of an industry person. If you're into robotics though, I'd have to imagine the robotics MS would look better
  6. I personally think philly is quite a bit more appealing than baltimore as a city. In terms of everything from crime to food to cost of housing, philly should win. I am not personally familiar with the exact distribution of faculty interests at JHU; I only know that they are well regarded for NLP research, but it doesn't seem too crazy to me that they'd be doing lots of things in the neighborhood of medicine with their world class medical school. Penn is also strong in NLP, but Penn, I think, overall is quite a bit better than many of the schools which are supposedly ranked higher than it via US News and the like. In particular, the CS people from there that I've talked to--grad, undergrad, faculty--were just much more knowledgeable than students I've talked to from several schools that US News ranks 5 through 10. Penn, like JHU, has a very good medical school and also a very good business school both of which the CS department do a lot of collaboration with. In short, when I went to Penn's open house I had all but written them off since I had gotten into some of my top choices, but I was blown away by how they compared with other schools and would have loved to have gone there had my interests matched up better with some of the work that was being done there. *To be fair, I've never had a chance to visit the CS department in person at JHU, so maybe it would beat my expectations as well. They have also coupled the success of their CS department to that of the business and medical schools there, so I think that while it's a small department
  7. That's not the reason
  8. I'd say upenn by a pretty wide margin based on you criteria and interests
  9. Depending on what you're planning to study preparing might be a waste of time. I started preparing the night before I took it and got plenty high enough for what I'm studying.
  10. I'm at the same school as you and I would suggest you take 447 (it's not terribly difficult, PM me if you wanna which prof to shoot for) and supplement with the Rosenlicht book they've been using for the honors course. The honors version isn't incredibly difficult either, but there are some pretty time-consuming homeworks. Either way, after taking one of these two, you will be able to take grad analysis over the summer as it's offered every summer and the person who usually teaches it is the best at teaching analysis at our school, surely you won't have the benefit of full semester's immersion in grad analysis, but this will prepare you to tackle any analysis you're going to need in grad school, I'd think. And regarding the fundamental mathematics course you took where you had trouble, I had a similar experience. Don't let the fairly bad treatment of introductory analysis topics that they give in math 347 scare you away from the subject, you'll develop things with a much longer stride and with much more care in 447
  11. Thanks for posting this
  12. Should arrive less than 24 hours after you accept the offer, at least that was the case for CS
  13. It appears they usually come out about a month later
  14. Out at CMU, my POI told me it was specifically because I had taken time off of school and he thought it was one of the more peculiar reasons for rejection he'd ever seen. Him being on sabbatical stopped him from "managing to react on time". Maybe he's just being nice, but he said he wanted me but the committee "wouldn't budge". Hopefully this won't work against me elsewhere.
  15. I haven't applied to Princeton, but I noticed someone said they called a secretary and got their rejection immediately after. Hopefully you'll call and get an acceptance, but I think you can find out today if you like.
  16. Awesome, looks like you'll know about Berkeley (and Stanford) tomorrow
  17. Well done. Top choice?
  18. Indeed the hammer will drop very soon, I think
  19. Penn is march 25/26
  20. I go to UIUC as an undergrad, and I can tell you that every single master's student I know is funded, many with RAs. EDIT: Oh and also, they don't make a funding commitment I don't think, but it would be historic to be a master's student and not actually have funding in a given year.
  21. That's what I was thinking, re: CMU. I don't know if the MLD decisions have been sent or not though. Did anyone get anything mentioning MLD specifically or did anyone hear back who had MLD as first preference?
  22. My professor of choice is on sabbatical this year, so I will opt for retaining a modicum of hope
  23. I'm getting more and more convinced they've sent all of their notifications; let's hope not
  24. Yeah, I hope that's right. It seems like they know who they're accepting...I'm not sure what could take long to notify people though, finding funding for them?
  25. I hope you're right
