  1. Hi everyone! I've been lurking for a while and finally registered just now so I can post something.

I applied to 4 schools and have been accepted to MIT, UMass-Amherst, UCLA and got wait-listed for NYU.

I'm quite sure where I'll be heading, but just want to think more about it before I decide. (I can't visit any of the schools as I'm working full-time in Taiwan.)

One thing I'm not sure about is whether I can live in Boston or LA just on the stipend. (Northampton/Amherst should be no problem, I guess.)

MIT hasn't given me the specifics about funding but I'd guess it'll be in the same range as the other two (20-25K /year).

I lived in Montreal, which even though being a big city, has very low rent, so my experience doesn't really help here.

    Any advice on this? Thanks!

it's so amazing to be accepted to these schools!

I think the funding will not be a problem.

I once wondered whether the stipend of NYU was sufficient for the cost of living in New York, and people told me : even students financially supported by the Chinese government live well there, and they just have about $1, 000/month.

  2. nor did I. its definitely a long shot and it seems like a lot of people applied for a spot there. This application year wasn't a successful one for me, but I'm willing to do it all over again just to apply to MIT again. I really, really loved the program. Will use it as inspiration to take the next year to improve my app smile.gif

It's really great that you think so! smile.gif you'll make it!

  3. Hello everyone,

I have not been active in the boards, but I have been following them. I thought it would be my duty to deliver you some unfortunate news.. Although I cannot be absolutely certain of hopefulapplicant's identity, I was also in attendance at the ucsd open house. Unfortunately, on the drive back home Friday night, she was involved in a serious car accident and passed away at the hospital. This was extremely shocking to hear, as she had such a bright future ahead of her and was an amazing person. Obviously I have not known her for a long time, but from meeting her, I could tell what a great person she was, and it is extremely painful for me to hear this news.

I thought everyone here also deserved to know, as she appeared to be pretty active in the forums, and I'm sure you all valued her friendship.

Once again, I cannot absolutely confirm her identity, but based on her acceptances and meeting her, I am almost certain that this is her.

I'm sorry to deliver such horrible news, but I thought it would be fair to share it, as I'm sure you are all wondering why she has not been active in the last few days.

it's so shocking and unbelievable.... i am sad to hear it...

  4. Thanks for the insight into U Chicago, vaaarr! What a great department to spend your undergrad career in. Dr. Xiang and Dr. Giannakidou are actually the two professors I mentioned in my statement of purpose. Dr. Xiang in particular has done some very exciting work in the past few years and the whole program felt like a great fit for me. However, they accept so few applicants that even applying felt like playing the lottery. Do you have any idea where they are in the process? It sounds like they sent out acceptances earlier in the week and since they mail out rejections, I figure it might be a couple weeks before I know for sure.

You are right too, Berkeley is great for phonology. Do you have a particular language group you are interested in? I know there are a few professors work on Austronesian languages, and the bay area is such a great place for finding speakers of far-flung dialects.

Spitz, even if NYU is your only choice, its a pretty great choice! Full funding, an amazing city right with informants from every possible language family, productive faculty--I hope they wow you on your visit so you can feel really good about going there.

I agree with Hopeful, spitz - NYU is a great 'only' choice. I hope you feel the same after the open house. I don't know if you've been to NYC before, have lived there, etc, but I'm from there -- so if you have any questions feel free to ask!

In terms of MIT, I think their admissions decisions should be coming any day now -- acceptances came out on this day last year blink.gif but I agree, a lot of people seemed to have applied so it'll be a long shot. Keeping my fingers crossed for us all ....

Thanks a lot for being so supportive!

Actually I think indeed NYU might fit me better than all other schools, and I am looking forward to meeting people there on the open day~

I've never been to NYC before. I hope I will like it. :-)

  5. You've made your decision already?

I decide to attend the open house of NYU, and I think I will decide to go there. After all, this is the only acceptance I have got, and I withdrew all other applications, except that of MIT. considering MIT has so many applicants.... I think it's highly possible that NYU might be my only choice available...

  6. I'm posting my background here...

MA in Linguistics from a well-known university in Taiwan.

    GPA: 90.29% (3.91/4.0) for MA, 86.43% (3.82/4.0) for BA

    GRE: 660 (94%) 790 (91%) 4.5 (67%)

    TOEFL: 107

Writing sample: MA thesis (inner aspect), working paper (applicatives), term paper (Austronesian languages)

Two linguistics related awards, 2-yr RA and 1-yr TA experiences

Applied: UMich, Mich State, UT Austin, Arizona, UPenn, NYU, Georgetown, Ohio State, McGill, Toronto, UBC, Delaware, Maryland

Accepted (by order): Georgetown (declined), UPenn (interviewed by Embick and Legate, Benjamin Franklin Fellowship), Ohio State (5-yr full funding, declined),

Interviewed: NYU (Kayne and Harves), Delaware (withdrawled), UMichigan (withdrawled)

Rejected: Maryland (I guess cuz I haven't heard anything from them)

You may wonder why I threw so many applications. Well, thats because my friend applied to 6 programs last year, all rejected. So I thought this was tough and was kinda worried in the beginning. But, things have been going far more smoothly than I thought. And I regreted that I didn't even tried MIT and UCLA...

I'll choose between UPenn and NYU.

    Good luck to everyone.

really a very impressive profile! and congratulations !

Applicatives and Austronesian languages interest me also. are you a native speaker of certain Taiwan Austronesian languages?

finally i was also interviewed by NYU (Harves and Kayne), but i was so tense in the interview that several times i even asked them to repeat their questions.... I should have had a better preparation...

May God bless every linguistic student here~

  7. One potential professor email me to tell me that I am admitted. 107 applied to OSU this year, among which 10 are admitted.

hi~ would you mind sharing your profile and the list of schools applied to with us? ~

  8. I wouldn't worry yet, Spitz. I had two phone interviews a week apart with U Maryland. I think they broke them up between professors and there may be some professors still calling students. They are still about 1 to 2 weeks out from invites to the Open House.

I do know how you feel--UCLA and Stanford both came up on the results board today, although I haven't heard anything yet. Exciting and nerve wracking!

emm... let me try to calm down.... i hope everyone of us will be enrolled in an ideal program~

  9. yeah i was interviewed by David Embick and Julie Legate. That was my first interview and I was very nervous and didn't perform very well. I even emailed to Embick two days later to tell him that I'd like to work with him very much, but he just gave me an obscure reply and i thought it was over.

    congratulations~

  10. I just finished reading the second volume of "3-body".....

then i browsed posts about SOP and writing samples of this site and began to feel uneasy....

i haven't had really serious linguistic courses in my previous programs.... i just read something on my own...about syntax... and i know hardly anything about semantics or phonology...

i am applying for MIT, NYU, UMD and UMich.... but after reading posts on this site, i began worrying..... my profile seems to be too mediocre... MIT and NYU are my dream schools, because I am interested in Kayne's and Pesetsky's works....

I doubt that the lack of Semantics courses at your school should be a problem. I think it's often the case that successful grad school applicants have had deeper knowledge (and interest?) of two out the three core subfields (syntax, semantics and phonology).

    Howdy! Where are you applying?

  11. Good to see you toosmile.gif

I saw your post.... your profile is so awesome.... let me weep for a while....

    Hi Spitz,

I am also from China. Good to see you in this forum

  12. Hello, everyone!

I am applying for Fall 2011 Linguistics PhD programs, too.

My profile is rather humble: Chinese; GRE: 700/800/4.5; Toefl: 105; BA & MA in French-related programs in China, GPA: 3.5, 3.6; few research experiences; interested in syntax...

While waiting for the results, I am reading posts here and science fictions to kill time... "Three-body", I do love this novel, enabling me to be concerned with something else ....

I do feel a great tension after reading a few posts here.... but it's no good worrying.... so... for the moment i indulge myself in the 3-body planet....
