Hi!
I have no idea how long would this solution finding could go, or if I could be admitted with funding only for 4 years, or if I should start begging people to raise money for one year, or what to do?
Do you think they could ultimately reject me? or are they sincerely trying to admit me? are university's that bad financially? what could I do -besides begging for money- to improve my chance? I really really need to be admitted, if not, I would have to get a way too underpaid job with long and crazy hours and forget my current research project and future education
Thank you! (and thank you for letting me vent!)
Could you let the program/PI know of your intent to apply for other grants perhaps? What about putting in an application to NSF or pursuing other grants while you are in the program? It seems like they could let you have the 4 years to try to get yourself more support for a fifth...especially if you are quite willing to take the risk and make that clear.

So last night I got an email from Drexel University, one of my current top choices, that started:
"Greetings from Drexel University! Congratulations! Your application..."
Of course I thought: "OMGOMGOMG!!"
And then the rest of the sentence was: "is complete and now under review with the Admissions Committee!"
For the love of everything, what kind of torture is that?!? I can see some Admissions person cackling a bit...please people, be merciful!

Well, I am a Neuroscience candidate also, and I've heard excellent things about Baylor. I was sorely tempted to apply there, but wanted to be in the Northeast. They also seem to have the best stipend in the land! I think an acceptance there would be great.
Sorry about the other program. I was similarly sad about a rejection from UPenn Neuroscience, because there were so many great labs there...
>>I've also applied to Baylor Neuroscience, UT Southwestern Medical Center Neuroscience, and University of North Texas pharmacology and neuroscience program. I received no decisions from any of these yet. But I got interviewed at Baylor and I felt really good and excited at first and felt that I may get in, but then when I got rejected by UT Austin, I felt like crap and that I might be rejected anywhere else too.

To apply to 9 programs:
Application Fees: ~$500
GRE tests/score reports: $350
Transcripts: ~$90
So about $940... *sigh* I did get 3 fee waivers...I tried...

Agreed! Still waiting to hear from 5 more schools...when will it end?!?

With the economy as it is, schools have got to be seeing a larger influx of older candidates this year. I'm 35 and applying now, and I can say without question I am more focused, efficient and dedicated than I ever was when I was in my early twenties. Schools wouldn't have wanted me then if they had known.

oh! I am jealous. I love badminton!
Before undergraduate work I had a life as an opera singer.
I too was an opera singer in my first career.

I'll also be at Temple in the fall - in the Neuroscience department. I hear the Neuro students take core classes with the Med students for the first year or so - so maybe I'll see you in class OleMissRebGoinNorth? Has anyone gotten their official documentation yet? I got an email saying I'd been accepted last week, and they said I'd get stuff in the mail in a few weeks.
