  1. Don't give up yet!! You still have some apps you are waiting on. If it ends up you have to go the Masters route first, you could still get through with little to no money. I had full funding for my Masters. Power of the positive!! (
  2. Tonights, have you checked your UMass status? I checked today and it has changed to "pending". I guess that is an improvement over 2 months of "applied". Of coures, with how slow they update that system, it could be 2 weeks ago pending instead of 2 hours ago!! Just a heads up for ya.
  3. That was me. I was accepted into the PhD program. No word on funding though. The sec (or student) who answered phone initially told me decision would go out this week. However, I talked to grad liason and was told they were meeting this week to decide funding. There has been university wide budget cuts. I have a feeling that this is the story at most schools.
  4. Sooo, the internet connection has been out in my area for over a day and I thought..yep when I get on there will be some news. Guess what? NADA!! Nothing in the mail either. What a total let down. Most schools are getting ready to go on spring break...think they will get out results before or after?
  5. Oh, now why ya gotta go and be negative. I was thinking it was taking them a little longer to blow up all the balloons that will accompany them when they hand deliver our acceptance letters to our houses (picture the Prize Patrol)
  6. I cannot believe there was nothing in the mail again today. I am totally losing my mind. I had an email yesterday from one of my top choices "we are missing letter of rec from prof X". I was like WTF, I called 2 months ago to make sure my app was complete and was told yes (I always keep track of day/time/who I talked to). Hopefully prof X isn't out sick, etc and gets my message to email a new letter.  I still haven't heard yea or nay from UMass...seems like forever since someone posted they had been accepted. Maybe that app was lost as well.
  7. I would be so angry!! At the VERY least they should refund you application fee.
  8. I am with you Tonights. I have been avoiding the boards. I called my schools and was told results would be a couple of weeks. I have been trying to be patient...obviously I slipped today!
  9. After speaking to my former dept chair, I think alot of program committees are meeting later (and making decisions later) because they are finding out what their budgets are going to be next year (cuts, # of GA positions, tenures, etc). My old program lost ALL of their dept funded GA positions for next year and 2 faculty up for tenure are going tohave to wait...these lovely revelations came fairly recently at a budget meeting. Most programs are probably attempting to balance positions for current students with apps (to entice new students). As for first round, there is a list of requirements that are used to prescreen (at least in our dept there was) and the sec or admin assistant goes through all of them. However, our school did not send out replies these until ALL decisions had been made. Course every school is different. :?
  10. Where they belong!! jk
  11. Interesting that there are no linguistic votes.
  12. Tonights, I am in the same boat as you. I have not heard from UMass either. I don't think they update their app site very often. It said until this week that they did not have any of my transcipts even though they had them before December. I'm going to give it a couple of days and if I don't hear one way or the other then I am going to call. Congrats to I_heart_fieldwork on getting an acceptance. Hope it was one of your top choices.
  13. So, I have been avoiding the boards this weekend (okay, looked a little) and not checking emails with dreaded excitement because there was no point. Now however, here it is a new work week (excluding holiday) and I can begin the painful process all over again. Hope everyone has a great day.
  14. Just put on them "no thank you, not interested"
  15. Got a big envelope in the mail today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOPE. It was my mother's tax papers (I do them for her)
  16. That really sucks...but you just truly made me laugh out loud. Any other time it would be nothing, but now with the pressure...if you stuck coal where the sun don't shine in a day you'd have a nice diamond!!
  17. Update: NO funding means no go.
  18. Haven't heard from them yet. The post didn't look to favorable, did it? Now the nerves have just revved up. I', gonna tkae a lap around the room and give them a call.
  19. I contacted potential profs at my top choices. Don't know if this helps really or not. They say it does, but if depts are getting hundreds of apps and even half contact profs, I think most would forget. They are busy with classes, advisees, thesis committees, etc. Course I could be wrong. Otherwise I'll be sad about how positive mine were. I think I may be getting a bit negative from the wait. Thank goodness Feb is half over!!
  20. I am not sure I want answers today. What if it is sad..."Happy Valentines, and oh yeah we don't want you!" Hmmm think I would rather bear the wait then ruin the weekend. Of course in 5 minutes I will change my mind and be screaming at the computer "GIVE ME ANSWERS!"
  21. I think it would be fine as long as they are nice. You know, no holes (which I am sure you already know  )... Besides, you are still a struggling grad student. Can't expect you to have the whole professional wardrobe yet. I think 1 day "dressy" (slacks like mentioned before) and one day "informal" would be perfect. Good Luck.
  22. I agree with crofty. Last year I was an adjunct so I was privy to the talk by faculty regarding applicant visits. There was definitely negative comments about those that dressed in jeans, t-shirts, etc. The faculty actually take the time to get current grad students to participate and talk to the potential students. It is important to them as well. Slacks/sweater and definitely comfy shoes would work great. Oh and don't forget the BIG jewelry! You know all us anthros wear BIG jewelry!
  23. Don't forget with funding!! Hate to see you have all that psy scarring and be broke!
  24. That is true. When I was applying to Masters programs I hated getting emails and not knowing until halfway down the page. Just put it in the subject and save me the horrible crash.
