  1. I was in conversation with a Prof even before the application process through emails and phone. But so far, I havent heard yet anything from the university. Do you think it is ok to drop an email to the prof asking for a status update
  2. I contacted the admissions regarding funding opportunities... She said "at this point in time, assistantship positions have been granted to a limited number of admitted students" and generally abt "About 85% of students in the department are funded by assistantships or fellowships".... I also learnt that I was not eligible for a TA unless I take the speak test administered by the university... I am in contact with a Prof whose research I am interested in and in all probability he will take me to his group. However, he has been tight lipped about funding saying that it will depend on some of the grants which he is expecting in the next few months... I am starting to get really worried now as this has been one of the groups I was seriously interested in, however I wont be able to fund myself through even for 1 semester. I dont know anything about my other choice of university- Cornell. I had hoped to select between the two if evyrthing went fine. What do you guys suggest. Should I write to my prospective advisor at University of Washington (Seattle) and let him know of my financial need?
  3. I was just wondering if this is a common situation that they inform abt admit first and then later abt funding .... i couldnt imagine a PhD admit w/o funding... also how late do u think it might happen... should be before apr 15 in the worst case i guess
  4. I dint get you... what do u mean by "one of mine"
  5. I have been admitted to the PhD program at UW Seattle but there has been no word about funding yet. Even in the results forum, I see many were admitted without any details abt funding still. When do we typically get to know about this?
  6. Any news about Cornell ECE PhD decisions.... have any of u guys had interviews atleast? When does Cornell ECE give out decisions or rather admits? I dunno how to go to the results page of the last year to get an idea of this... but seems like there has been one admit and one reject this year...the wait is getting really difficult
  7. For sure, I am going to the visit day as I want to decide properly btw my No1 and No2, though there has been no decision from No1 yet..... But the point I am worried is when will I come to know about funding? So far according to the results on this website evryone has got an admit w/o any word on funding.... I am thinking of making it clear on the visit day as to regarding the funding aspect(Mar 13).
  8. I got admitted to my No 2 choice and am waiting to hear from my No 1 yet. The university (No 2) has sent an invitation for the visit day. However, there has been no mention of any funding so far. I am in contact with a Prof in whose research I am very much interested. I also met him during a conference and he was quite nice and introduced to his grp saying that I would be joining his group. However still there has been no word about funding. In one of the email conversations, I asked him several questions and also asked abt funding in a polite way. He said he has some grants pending and would come to know of it in the next few months. I am a little worried as there is no way I could go for a Phd without aid. I am interested in his research but there is no way I could afford it. Any suggestions on this?
  9. My advisor was quite confident that it would be accepted and hence he suggested me to put it as "submitted". The decision of rejection came recently after I had submitted the applications. So now should I inform all the univs of this to change the CV.
  10. Even I was not very sure of this. However, my advisor suggested me that it should be fine to put it as "submitted to conference". Will this be a big mistake? I am worried now.
  11. I had submitted a paper to an IEEE conference last September and had stated in my CV regarding this as "submitted to conference". However, the paper was rejected. Should I mail and let the prof's or the admissions committee know about this? I hadnt attached the papers as such in the extra application materials section, but had it stated in my CV and SOP.
  12. 1) Hi I am applying for a PhD in EE. My advisor for my Master's recommended me to one of the Professors I was interested in working. The professor set up a phone interview/conversation with me and enquired about my current research and interests. He also encouraged me to apply and visit his grp if possible but suggested dont go out of your way to come over.I dint have the time and money to schedule the visit. After that we had some emails exchanged during one of which he sent me a paper and asked if I was interested in something similar so that "we could get you up to speed". I read and replied saying I was interested and also had a couple of questions about the paper. However, after that there hasnt been any replies from him for arnd 25 days. I emailed once in between with some other inquiries and no reply for that. What do you think might be happening. Is he suddenly ditched any plans of entertaining me? I come from a not very well known undergrad institution but am pursuing my Masters at a decently ranked univ and applying for a very reputed univ for my PhD. I have arnd 1.5 yrs of exp as an RA. I had submitted a paper for an IEEE conference but was rejected:(. I have a great GPA both in my Masters and undergrad. And not to mention strong recommendations. 2) I will be attending a conference soon(attending and not presenting any paper) and I believe my prospective advisor will be there. Do you think it will be a nice idea to meet him during that time? Also any suggestions on phrasing the email for setting up the meeting so that I could get a reply?
