  1. It's not that I'm worried there won't be anywhere to shop, I'm just worried there won't be anywhere cheap to shop. Specialty stores and boutiques are fun, but not really financially feasible on a grad student's pay. Or maybe they are and I'm just being overly cautious...
  2. Another shopping question... I searched online for a Target in or near SB, and to my horror the closest one is apparently more than an hour away. Does SB/Goleta/IV have anything Target-like?
  3. I officially accepted my offer from UCSB today! I'd have accepted sooner, but they were rounding up some additional funding to compete with another offer I had, so I wanted to wait until that was secured. I hope someone on the waitlist elsewhere gets my spot!
  4. I've been accepted to UCSB's anthropology program. For a while I was undecided because I had a great funding offer from them and from one other school. But pretty much everyone I've talked to has said that I'd be crazy not to go to Santa Barbara, so I'm pretty sure that's where I'll decide to go. I couldn't make it to their grad preview weekend, but I've had a lot of really positive communication with various members of the department. I think I'll really like it there! psi*psi, what kind of place did you find, and what's the rent if you don't mind me asking? I'm seriously considering getting university housing in San Clemente Villages, but if there are other semi-affordable options out there I wouldn't mind checking those out...
  5. I was the one who posted that they were still making decisions and would let us know in a week or two. I emailed the graduate secretary, and that's what her reply said. Maybe the other person spoke directly with one of the committee members? In any case, I was none too pleased to read that they'd already notified the people who have been accepted. :x
  6. Ugh, this is why I shouldn't check the results board at 6:00 in the morning. Someone posted a rejection from Stony Brook, so I'll be waiting all day for mine to come...
  7. I was recently accepted to do a PhD at Arkansas and will most likely end up going there. But I've never been to Fayetteville and am hoping somebody can give me some pointers. Is the cost of living higher or lower than average? What can I expect to pay for rent for a reasonably nice one or two bedroom apartment? Also, what kinds of things can I do for fun? It would be great to find some fun coffee shops, restaurants, and recreational type stuff to do during the 5 minutes when my head isn't buried in books and journal articles? Thanks!
