  1. Sorry to hear that. I don't know why they enjoy torturing us like this
  2. Seems like today is the "take out the trash" day for UCSD. I see a couple of rejects posted.
  3. I got an email from them notifying acceptance just a few minutes back. Check your email!
  4. To all those who are still waiting, it might be worth checking with the department. From what I know, our graduate secretary told us that they received around 70 files from the admission committee on the day the acceptance emails were sent out.
  5. Congrats to all who got in! I hope to see you all at GradFest The information I received is that the department received around 600 applications, and ~70 offers were made.
  6. Dr. Brent Waters also joined UT recently as Assistant Professor.
  7. I actually applied to UT, forgot to add in my signature  However, I don't think the networked systems research at UT is as strong as in other schools I applied to.
  8. Life's fine now... will get worse when the summer starts
  9. AFAIK, there hasn't been any admits till now. I know they sent out a bunch of interview calls. I'll update you guys as and when I get any information.
  10. Ivan3749, which field are you applying to?
  11. As an "insider", I had a talk with one of my professors. The info is that they received much more applications, and the quality of application pool is extremely strong this year. We were informed that the visit weekend would be on March 27, so I guess the decisions would be out in a couple of weeks. Best of luck!
  12. congrats heheman! I think I'm out at UCSD too
  13. I agree with michigantrumpet. It's extremely hard to judge your own essay. Last year, I thought I had an OK essay. I showed it to a few professors, and a few PhD students and the unanimous answer was it was crap. I spent a month rewriting the whole thing this year. I got it reviewed by a few professors and a few of my friends. After 4 rounds of revision, they said it looked OK. I also modified my essay for each school, pointing out who I wanted to work with and how I might be a good fit given my background.
  14. From my experience, I can tell you that recommendations matter the most at top schools. I have one publication and two under review, a US patent, perfect GPA in grad school but still I got rejected at every place I applied to last year. This year I see it repeating. I personally know people who got admitted to Washington/Berkeley/MIT because of strong recommendations. I can tell you that their profile is no match to leogk or other members here. One thing I noticed is that if the professor who recommends you is an alumni of a school you are applying to, then it helps tremendously - it's almost like a free pass in most cases. I too am in a very stressful situation as you - right now, I don't know what I'll do. All we can do now is to believe that everything happens for good.
  15. @csApplicant, I did not receive an official email from CMU, but I know from many of my friends that CMU only has a single round of admits. So I'm assuming it's a reject. My specialization is networked systems. You can find my profile in the 'CS applicants where are you' thread.
  16. @michigantrumpet, congrats! You are on a roll man I wish I had at least one admit!
  17. Thanks nebulasam! I wish I could get into a top school like you
  18. Very true. I can vouch for the importance of recommendations from my experience. I have seen people with 1200's in GRE getting into Berkeley, Washington, CMU etc because of recos. I got rejected everywhere last year. This year, I had significant improvements (atleast I thought so) in my profile - I had new publications, have been involved in many new research projects, filed a US patent, but still my fate remains the same because I don't have recos from influential profs.
  19. Great profile! Congrats again. Mine: GRE Q800/V550/AWA 4.5, undergraduate GPA 3.7 (non-US), graduate GPA: 4.0 (top 10 CS school), 1 publication in a top ACM conference (2nd author), 2 publications under review (first author in both), 1 US patent application, 4 yrs work experience. I intend to specialize in networked systems. I guess I am out of luck this time, didn't hear from any schools I applied to.
  20. congrats to all who got in! seems like I won't get in anywhere this time
  21. michigantrumpet, PCP and mav3rick, congrats! mav3rick, mind sharing your profile? I applied to systems & networking stream too.
  22. mav3rick and PCP: congrats! I'm wondering what it takes to get into top schools. Do you think you guys can share your profile? I saw michigantrumphet's profile. Here's mine: GRE Q800/V550/AWA 4.5, undergraduate GPA 3.7 (non-US), graduate GPA: 4.0 (top 10 school), 1 publication in a top conference (2nd author), 2 publications under review (first author in both), 1 US patent application, 4 yrs work experience. I applied for networks and systems stream.
  23. @michigantrumpet, I have heard of similar things from my friends. If you look at the results search at gradcafe, the trend seems to be that all admit postings have been on one or two specific dates. After that, it has been rejects.
