  1. Canadian Universities are sooooooooooo slow, I have not heard from the 5 schools I've applied to  What on earth are they doing? They don't even respect April 15th....dry.gif

Well, Canadians schools don't abide by the April 15th notification deadline. It's something to take into consideration when applying to Canadian and American schools. If you look at the results board for last season, a lot of Canadian applicants didn't get notified until mid-April, May, and even June! ;)

  2. Hey!

I have been trying to log into myfile since last night and the site just doesnt seem to be functioning right. It just instant logs me out?

Is anyone else getting this problem?

Mine appears to be working. I accepted my offer about a week ago, but now when I log in have an extra 'apply for housing' link on the right side.

I just noticed this on the page: Please be advised that the Future Students web site will undergo maintenance tomorrow, April 13, between 6 and 9am, and will be unavailable during that time. We apologize for any inconvenience.

  3. Hello everyone~

I have applied for the 2011 Fall master program in economics, and now I am choosing from the schools below:

    Canadian school: UBC

US schools: Boston University, Tufts University

I know the Department of Economics at UBC has a good international reputation, which is very appealing since I plan to apply for PhD programs after I get the MA degree. However, I cannot persuade myself to give up US schools and go to Canada (no offense), and one of my friends who is attending schools at Boston strongly encourages me to live and study there.

As April 15th is approaching, I feel quite helpless about making the final decision. I really need your advice. Thank you^^

Go to Boston U. It's quite clear you don't want to go to Canada, and you didn't mention anything about Tufts. Having a close friend living near you makes a big difference, so I'd say go to Boston. Good luck.

  4. I had applied to York 2 years ago for my MA. They didn't get back to me until late March, and even then, we played phone tag for a week or two.

Finally heard back from York. It's good news! Looks like my "only applying to my program" gamble paid off!

  5. I just heard back from York and it wasn't good news. :( Good luck to everyone else.

Sorry to hear that, prongster :( At least you have some acceptances... and hopefully you'll get off the waitlist at UoT.

    As for me, still nothing...

  6. So...

Now that I did contact the program and they didn't give me any time frame for a decision nor a hint on a waitlist,

and now that I know other people were rejected, should I contact the POI and ask where things stand?

Or do I just WAIT SOME MORE?

    :(

[i mean, most chances are that the POI will tell me to contact the program, which I already did. But if I'm on a waitlist, I want to show interest]

I'd wait until next week. Hang in there! I'm sure you will hear back from them soon. I think the fact that you haven't been rejected is enough to be optimistic . They could be trying to secure funding, etc. Putting pressure on your POI is probably not gonna help. Be patient. I know it's hard :(

  7. Nooo idea, but the woman (who has been incredibly nice throughout this process—it's wonderful that they have such great people running these emails) said that they would send me an Email with an offer as soon as they heard back from some other people. I don't know what that indicates about where I stand, but I'm interpreting it as a reason to be optimistic!

And that's exciting! Good luck. At least you can breathe easy this weekend. :)

Definitely! Regardless of the outcome, I know next week I'll be free. No more waiting! I can't wait...

It really does sound like you have a good shot at UoT. They seem to admit a lot of people off the waitlist, so you definitely have good reason to be optimistic!

Good luck and keep us posted on York!

  8. MA.

I have a friend currently enrolled in the PhD program who coincidentally is a great source of administrative information. I was starting to get panicky until she let me know yesterday where things stood.

Good to know! I applied for MA as well. Do you have any idea how many MA students they admit per year? Thank you so much for sharing the information! I really appreciate it. I've been panicking all week. Rose sent that email saying we'd know by March 31st, so I was really worried.

  9. Yeah, I'm fairly certain my deadline was January 15th. I remember being surprised that it got moved.

I'm that type of person, too—procrastinating has never helped.

(Though unrelated to this thread in particular, I just heard back from U of T and I got waitlisted. Not bad to know, at least!)

Aw. Any idea where you stand on the waitlist?

I got news from York thanks to a fellow poster. Apparently, decisions have been made and they will be notifying sometime next week.

  10. I've been perusing this website for a few days now and decided to join as I have some information for all of you who have applied for York's graduate Linguistics/Applied Linguistics program.

The admissions committee met twice in the last three weeks and made their decisions yesterday. You may have tried to call the graduate assistant, Rose, but she is not in the office today. Unfortunately you're going to have to wait a little longer (I know, it's excruciating!) but you can expect notification by the middle of next week.

Hope that helps. Best of luck! ;)

Thanks. I'm also waiting for this program. Did you apply for MA or PhD? Good luck to you too!

  11. I don't know! It might have been? I know it definitely was for mine, and when I considered a different program, they explained the deadline is usually extended to the end of January/Feb 1st because it was one where I was required to meet with the department before I sent along an application.

I don't think the deadlines were pushed back. I was looking around and only a few have been extended... The deadline for the translation program has been extended to April 15! I guess they didn't get enough applicants. Asides from that case, I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Mind you, I didn't look at all programs (there are a lot!), so who knows. :P

My deadline was Feb 1st all along. I just sent my application really early.... I had all my materials ready months in advance. I'm that type of person...

  12. I took my MA at York in Communication and Culture. I didn't receive notice until April 4th by post mail. I read over that letter last night, and it said to look out for an official acceptance on myfile. So I'm assuming that wasn't posted until a week or more after I heard via mail. (This was in 2008, so maybe things have changed- I have also seen that Communication and Culture students are hearing by mail, email and website so I don't know what their protocol is now)

But basing on past experience- I've been OCD with my mailbox, only checking myfile once and awhile. I should also mention that I emailed the Women's Studies department on March 22 asking when they would notify me- and their reply was "within a month or so". That seems like a long time, so I’m assuming I’m on the b-list. Also, the results board shows one other PhD applicant being rejected a couple days after I sent that email… another indicator I’m on the b-list?

Well no point in over analyzing, even though we all know it’s impossible to not get obsessed with these life changing decisions.

    Good luck everyone (including myself)!

    I can totally relate, andiepants!

It's really hard not to over analyze the results board. I've also formulated strange theories as to why York is taking so long... My last theory is that UoT and York share a lot of applicants, and UoT's Linguistics department notified about a month ago, so I'm thinking York U is waiting for all the shared applicants to decline (UoT is usually the first choice - but not in my case) so they can then notify the "b"-list. I'm going crazy here... ;) I applied for this program back in November. I've been waiting for ages!

At least I find it very comforting to know I'm not the only one, so thank you guys for keeping me updated! Good luck!

  13. It does help! I've been following my program under "York [Program]" for a while, which is how I've personally kept track of things (as York doesn't overlap with NYU in my field). It might not be so easy for other people.

I have the vague, fleeting hope that maybe they just haven't gotten around to me yet because I'm American, or ... something. I really like the opportunities that York has to offer. But I also know the limitations on international acceptances.

Same here! I would feel so much better if I was Canadian.... but I'm not, so.... :( If you look at the rejections for York, most of them have been posted by international students. I'm trying to stay positive, but this is my second year applying as an international student to a Canadian school, and it just seems impossible. I wish we had equal opportunity, but such is life.

[Note: I'm currently awaiting my Canadian permanent residence; I ended up applying for it after I submitted my application to York. When I saw they were only allowing one international student per department, I freaked out and I emailed my program to let them know that I wouldn't be needing a student visa. Let's see if that makes a difference this year. I'm pretty sure it still says "American/Visa required" on their system. I should be re-landing as a permanent resident in about a month, so hooray!]

Either way, good luck to everybody, especially to international students applying to York. We need all the luck if can get if the one international person per department thing is true.

  14. Are you pulling the information for this list from the results board, or from what you personally know? I haven't heard anything back from York myself, so I'm curious if I should send along an Email to the department in question. Thanks!

It's from the results board. I just thought it might be easier to visualize since the results board has three different names for York U (York University (Toronto), York University (Canada), and York University). But looking at the results, it seems a lot of departments are still making decisions....

I don't really understand MyFile. Doesn't the department forward the application to graduate admissions and then they update the file?

I'm getting discouraged too, folks. :(

  15. I believe some of York's departments may have been waiting to hear about the provincial budget. The news on that is good- so lets hope that translates to a higher acceptance rate for this year's applicants.

I'm waiting on Women's Studies at York

    I hope so too.

Here's a quick run-down of the York U programs that have notified students:

    Education Language, Culture And Teaching

    Social And Political Thought, MA

    Woman Studies, PhD

    Interdisciplinary Studies

    History, PhD

    Science And Technology

    Sociology

    Communication And Culture, MA

    Humanities

    English

    Geography

    Political Science, MA

    Cinema

    Psychology (Clinical/Developmental)

To international students: Most posters are reporting that one only one international student per program is being accepted this year.

Also, make sure to look for both York (Toronto) and York (Canada) on the results board. Hope this helps.

  16. I wouldn't give up hope - I finally heard from York today! And surprisingly the email was in my junk mail folder... be sure to check your junk mail as well! Since they gave you a date - I'd just wait it out until the end of the day tomorrow and if you still haven't heard anything, then send them a quick polite email.

Yay! I'm glad someone finally heard back from York.

Thank you for your advice. I'll be checking my junk folder as well. If I don't hear anything by 4pm, I'll email them. Tomorrow is gonna be a rough day... but at least I know it should be a matter of hours...
