I received a rejection from Chicago's Ph.D. program today with an offer of admission into their CIR masters. While I'm still holding onto a bit of hope for a Ph.D. I have to consider this as a possibility. Do any of you know anything about their CIR program? Reputation? Quality? I figure that if I don't get into a Ph.D. program I might as well move on to a masters and Chicago should be an excellent choice. The problem is that I haven't given it much thought until now and I don't have as much info as I'd like. Thoughts?

Still waiting and not sure what to make of it...

Thanks, everyone -
Well, I'm still waiting on Georgetown, Chicago, and Columbia. While many acceptances and rejections have gone out for each of these programs (except Georgetown) I have yet to hear anything. What do you make of that? Chicago is especially perplexing to me because people began reporting Acceptances, Rejections, AND Waitlists several weeks ago! Should I contact them, or are some of you in the same boat?
-
Sorry to hear it, fenderpete... Take comfort in the fact that you're not alone. A lot of us aren't happy about how this season has worked out.

This unofficial waitlist nonsense from so many schools is nuts! But, on a positive note, I've just completed 10 months of research for my thesis and gotten some incredible results! Not having the application season I was hoping for has made me somewhat bitter so I am VERY excited to have something go my way! Too bad I finished this research after submitting my writing samples but, hey, at least I can use them next year if things don't work out!
-
Not if there is no "official" waitlist. I've heard that many programs just keep an internal waitlist that they can tap into as their admits refuse the offers. That might be what is happening, or there could be many rounds of rejections, or (like I said above) we misspelled our email addresses.
-
Ummmm...I didn't get a Columbia rejection. Is it possible that I'm waitlisted? WTF?!?! I get outright rejected by schools far less prestigious and might be waitlisted at Columbia? This whole process is screwed. The only thing that I can think of is that Columbia is the one school that perfectly matches my research interests. Maybe that really is the most important thing. Or maybe they just mistyped my email

Well, I guess that's it for me. I've been accepted to UF w/o funding and am still waiting on WUSTL, Columbia, and Chicago. I've got to come to terms with what that means. On the plus side, I've spent to last few days looking at jobs in my field and it seems that I am very qualified for dozens of well paying jobs! Maybe that's what I should have done in the first place. Well, as the old saying goes...If you want to hear God laugh, tell him your plans!

Scratch that...it was an ad from Political Science Quarterly in NYC. I'm not talking to her for the rest of the day.

My wife said there's a Columbia letter waiting at home. What do you all think it is? Rejection or waitlist? Crap, another day of productivity lost.
-
Congrats! Are they making a better offer than UF? I'm really glad to got into such a great program!

I have heard, but have no idea if it's true, that admissions committees do not differentiate between US and international Ph.D. applicants when it comes to the GRE. The idea is that at such a high level there are equal expectations for skill and capabilities. Again, I have no idea if this is true or not.

LOL!

As much as I try to be an optimist, I'd like to share last night's dream with you all. I had a dream that I didn't get into any Ph.D. programs so I had to find a job. I ended up working as a bus driver at Universal Studios in Orlando. Why is Universal Studios significant? It's significant because I wasn't even good enough to be a bus driver in Disney World, that's why! This whole process is clearly having quite an impact on my self-esteem. :|

Thanks, BigCheese. Finally, some actually useful info regarding Georgetown. I'll cross my fingers for both of us.
-
Yep...actually, I'm waiting on pretty much everyone. This sucks
-
Hey...the truth is never snooty Thanks for the timeline. Not sure how to interpret the difference between our timelines but I'm hoping for good news for both of us. Sadly, though, I'm IR too

Hey, expatbayern... I'm waiting on Washington also and I have a theory. Did you submit your application close to the deadline? I did and I'm wondering if I'm on the bottom of the pile. For some reason, I'm not willing to concede defeat yet. Good luck!
-
Edited because it was just me whining...

For those of you that don't understand the above remark, please see:

Fine...I'll edit too...you're welcome....

Nah, I was in the Army for several years. The problem for you could be that you pay attention to the outside world and might have to do something you think is wrong. A tough situation to put yourself in. And Iraq is way too hot...

Damn! Still no word from U. Washington (they said they're not done), Georgetown, Chicago (but I know what that means) and UF. Yale, Emory, and Columbia have all essentially said no. If I don't get into any of them I'll just join the damn police department. What else can you do with a Bachelor's in PoliSci? What really sucks is that I know I would be an incredible professor...

Nuts
