Actually I have not applied to many schools but 4. CMU(CS and ML) - Rejected NCSU - rejected Ohio state University (CS) University Of virginia (CS) I am desperately in need of admission because i will not be able to apply next year again. I have decent GRE -1310 TOEFL - 104 M.S. computer science GPA 3.92/4.0 No publications but assisting a professor in her research in text mining. I don't really know why I am rejected at NCSU. I am very hopeful on the other schools. and I will be super excited to hear your positive result.

Congratulations siddharth, you have a ray of hope. Don't worry you will get there. I had applied to CMU CSD and I am rejected. Its good to hear an indian getting considered. It was my dream school. Don't worry be optimistic. you will make it.

Hello professor Jonathan, Your posts are very enlightening. They are definitely going to help the applicants in the future. In majority of the cases international applicants like me wonder what exactly can make an impact for getting an acceptance in PhD . Thanks adinutzyc, Its really nice of you for considering my request. Actually i had done my M.S. in india and had already done 6 years of college so I am not very inclined towards doing an M.S. again. But I want to do Ph.D. and I am very passionate about it. My goal is to become an academician. So i can do only two things 1) be hopeful for getting admit this year. 2) apply next year again with some research experience. But the latter idea is not very wise one because in india we don't get much research opportunities. And if I start working at an industry then it will be impossible to do any independent research. So i can just hope for the best that i get admitted this year. Anyways congratulations to you and fangsout.

I have a final question if it does not annoy you. If i get admitted in some school for M.S. and if I may want to apply the next year again for Ph.D. without completing the M.S. is it possible?

I had 1 LOR from the professor whom I am assisting, I from my head of the dept, and one from the ex-Dean of my college. I have studied under all three of them. They agreed to write a fairly well recommendation. But they are not internationally reknown professors. and my undergraduate GPA is 3.0 but my major was physics and my M.S. is in Computer science but its from an indian university. But the university is internationally reknown so that should not be a problem. I suppose my head of the dept might have messed up the LOR because he submitted it only 5 minutes before the deadline.

Ya thanks newms, actually I received a rejection from NCSU last night. Should i be hopeful on others? my m.s. GPA is 3.92 no publications but assisting a professor in her research. GRE-1310 and TOEFL-104. Still they mentioned in their rejection that "Their decision was based on the requirements of their particular program, the qualifications and performance of students currently studying in the program, and the number of new students that the program can accommodate and support. I concur with their decision and must therefore deny your admission." What do you think that my stats are too low for such kind of a school??

Ya that's the spirit closetgeek. It's just the start. Not an end by any means. just be optimistic. sooner or later we will also hear some good news. But its better if its sooner. hope for the best.

Which other schools you have applied for?

My plan B is applying to some low end schools for MS so that I can do some thing for a year or so and then apply for Ph.D. next year again. By the way I have applied at CMU, UVA,NCSU, and Ohio State. My GRE is 1310 (q-780,v-530) B.Sc. GPA - 3.0 MAster of Computer Application GPA-3.92 I have no publication but assisting a professor in research in Text mining. I have three above average LORs. I think CMU saga is finished. Can you rate my chances on the other 3? Thanks in advance.

So finally CMU has started notifying for admissions. I haven't heard anything though. Can anyone tell me should I be still hopeful? Or they have given out all acceptances?

Hello to all and congratulations to all of you who have been admitted to the Ph.d. program. Its really a nice feeling to get admitted into a Ph.D. program in computer science. I have applied in CMU,Ohio state University , University of Virginia and North Carolina State University for computer science. My profile is : BS in physics GPA - 3.0 Masters in computer applications GPA - 3.92 GRE - 1310 (Q - 780 V - 530 ) TOEFL - 104. No publications but assisting a professor in a research in text mining. I am assigned to work out a way to optimize the keyword extraction phase. The completion of the task will take quiet a bit long. will not have anything major before admission decisions are made. Mentioned about the research approach in SOP. Will have 3 above average letter of recommendations. One recommender is the prof. with whom I am doing the research, one from head of the department and one from Ex-Dean. Can some one tell what are my chances of getting in any of these universities? I am really very tensed. Please if any one could see my profile and reply? My area of interest are text mining, wireless networks and network security. Thanks in advance.
