  1. Do you have any good tips study tips for qualifying written exams in science? The material is tons of primary lit X several profs X several topics per prof. The written exam is broken into two days, closed book. Thanks very much for any ideas.
  2. You're right: the set of all students, ranked by panels., is a partial ordering. Maybe their email about ranking is sloppy and they really should say "ranking within the panel"?
  3. Right, those percentiles are of all applicants, not of a particular discipline. Apparently the number of awards per discipline is a function of the number of applicants to that area, which means that there's no way to game the system by choosing an obscure field.
  4. My understanding is that applications are ranked by each reviewer. Then, the net score is a function of the 3 rankings. Presumably by using a rank statistic, they eliminate the need to maintain tight calibration between reviewers. If that's correct, then someone could get the fellowship while having three relatively low absolute ratings, simply by getting three tough reviewers. At the same time, someone else might not get the fellowship but get high absolute scores from generous reviewers.
  5. So I'm wondering how valuable and significant the world sees NSF honorable mention? For example, it obviously goes on the C.V. But does help in getting other grants? Does it help getting a postdoc position? Or, does it highlight that the person didn't win? Any other thoughts, good or bad?
