  1. I'll add to the string of posts by older PHD applicants. I also went back to school for an MA program in literature after 8 years in a completely unrelated and fairly successful career. I am turning 32 next month. And having gotten an acceptance from the program I had been dreaming of going to, I can tell you that I am beyond happy to be starting my doctorate at this age, and looking forward to a focused 6 or so years ahead. Every person is different, of course, but I know that the past, say, 8 years or so have given me more clarity and belief in what I am doing right now than I could have ever imagined 8 years ago. One thing that has changed for sure is that I got over my fear of still being "in progress" in my 30s, or even 40s. Getting rejects in your second round surely does not feel good, but at least I hope you stop fretting about 'the clock ticking' or whatever else people say to reinforce that fear of straying from a normative vision of our lifespans.

  2. there's an acceptance posted for german studies/humanities center-

could the poster give some more info? did you apply to humanities center in comp. lit? or am i missing something?

anyone else heard back from hopkins? i applied for intellectual history (through the humanities center)- they're my top pick and haven't heard a thing yet...

hey, that was me. i applied to the humanities center for comp lit with and picked the double major option with the german department. the acceptance came from the german department, but this means i would be getting an MA in german lit after which i would receive my phd in comp lit through the humanities center.

i'm super happy about the acceptance and the funding situation, but have another option to weigh this against. anyway, i have some thinking to do in the next month!

i hope you get what you want!

  3. Congratulations! Would you mind sharing your interests and your admissions profile (GPA, GRE scores, background, languages, etc.)? For those of us still waiting and thinking about re-applying next year, it would help us get an idea of the kind of person they are lookng to admit.

    Thanks and congratulations, again!

Thank you very much! I promise to do that as soon as I hear a bit more from them... No idea about funding yet, so I feel a bit nervous about treating this as settled. Soon, though...
