  1. I am wondering if this is rumor. I was told that private schools, say, those of Ivy Leagues, give out bigger funding packages to accepted students. On the other hand, if you get accepted with funding from public universities, they give you less in terms of money and shorter in terms of time. In public schools, you also need to work as a teaching or research assistant in order to waive tuition. I thought working as a TA or RA is part of PhD training, and I certainly appreciate assitantship opportunities. However, is it really true that private schools give out 5-year fellowships, which means no need of work? I am so not convinced, and need proof to believe it.
  2. I think it is a great sign that you received invitation to visit the school. I don't know if it means an admission for sure, but two people I know had received invitations before they got admitted. I have another question for you, though. I noticed that you applied to UM-EEB. I have heard that they were rejecting people. So congratulations that you received the admission! I applied for the same program. I would love to know when you received the admission, and if you attended the recruitment weekend or not? I am still waiting to know my status... Thank you!
  3. Thank you, and for ssb7 and others who would know, how likely that people who are not invited to recruitment weekend would be admitted eventually? I know it depends, but would love to know how schools would make the decisions while they don't know the students "that much." I mean, compared with those they can see and talk in person, those not coming to recruitment weekend are "not as real"...do I make the point? I just checked the website to know that they did have a recruitment weekend on Feb 12-13. I wasn't invited, but they have not turned me down yet either. I have heard from a guy who applied to the same program just got a rejection letter. I guess I am on the waitlist...which gives me some reason to wish...but I want it to be real...and it is so hard not to think of the worse...
  4. I received a letter from the program responding to my question regarding interview. The graduate program assistant told me they do invite a select group of students for a Recruitment Weekend. The committee has been considering applicants and will have made all decisions by the beginning of March. Except of these and that I will hear from the department in a few weeks, he did not indicate when the Recruitment Weekend is, nor I am in the select group or not. I am wondering how the Recruitment Weekend works. Is it an only one-time thing? Or they rotate students to the school? That means the program does not do phone interviews (nevertheless, I have seen records on thegradcafe that one and only one applicant reported having received phone interview from a professor)? The answer that the graduate program assistant gave to me is really vague that I can't see a clear chance...BTW, the deadline was Dec 1 last year. It has been more than 2 months and I have not seen people on the board report acceptance...Are schools making decisions later this year? If so, why? The impacts of financial crisis on higher education? Your opinions are sincerely welcome. Thank you!
  5. I am wondering if age is a crucial factor when the committees determine to take one applicant or another. For those who aim to pursue academia career, age would have its correlation with competitiveness. The younger would get more attention when they apply for academic jobs...Is this correct?
  6. Thanks! My potential advisor encouraged me to apply for two programs at the same university. I did apply for both of them. She encouraged me to do so because her program does not fund international students well (or in fact poorly). I guess I would be considered by her partner who closely works with her in the other program if her program does not have funding for me. It is also highly possible that no matter which program takes me they both will sit in my committee. I am still waiting here, and hoping some good news will really come. I have gained a scholarship which provides me $25,000 each year for two years. The school I would like to go, however, costs $45,000-50,000 each year before achieving candidancy according to my estimation. I was told by a friend that I am competitive because I have partial funding already, but I am not quite sure of this since I still need financial support from the university. This may sound silly but, would anyone have some ideas in mind that how good my "scholarship profile" would look to the school? Thanks!
  7. I received a letter from my potential advisor telling me that she was writing me a letter of nomination for funding. In order to do that, she would love to get some information about the scholarship I have obtained - how much and how long it is. She has never given me a word I will be accepted or not. I have not heard from the program about my admission yet either. So, how would you value this letter from my potential advisor? Is it a good sign or I shouldn't be expecting too much so I wouldn't get really disappointed maybe sometime from now? Thanks!
