  1. My Stanford and Berkeley admits came in yesterday with a three year and one year fellowship respectively.
  2. By far Berkeley and MIT being close seconds.
  3. I just got my admit to study theory at Princeton with a full fellowship. My happiness knows no bounds!
  4. From what I hear, it's not very common for them to interview folks. Also, I can confirm that they are in the process of short listing applicants. One of my recommenders was contacted by faculty there recently regarding my application recently. All the best!
  5. Hehe, no need to apologize. You came off as doing no such thing I do hope we hear from them soon.
  6. Firstly, congrats on your MIT admit! And to answer your question, not really. The conversation was a very short one and he asked exactly two questions. One was about my plans of deferring and the other was about how keen I was on Berkeley. He never told me anything about the admission committee or its schedule.

    MIT?

I was told by a suitably placed source that they would be admitting a sum total of one person from my country in my area of specialization. Turns out it's not me
  8. Yes The faculty I was in contact with wanted me to keep him posted about how my application to Part III at Cambridge was going. I told him I would but I doubt I will hear anything from them this week. Hope everything goes better than expected!
  9. I don't know if this applies to the specific programs you guys applied to but my acceptance mail said that I would have to get back to them by the 3rd of February on whether or not I would be attending the open house since they needed to make hotel reservations.
  10. So I noticed a bunch of admits to Cornell for their PhD program in the results section and was wondering if they are done sending out admits.Any info on this? Anyone know if admits came out all at once in the past or were there multiple rounds?
  11. I'm not really sure We talked mostly about what I planned to do in the future and about why I was considering studying math for a year before starting grad school. We also talked about why I wanted to do research and what my interests were and that kind of stuff. I'm not sure how I came off given that I am a bit undecided about exactly what sub-field within theory I want to work in. Otherwise, we spoke about the current work that is happening there and their prospective lines of research and that was pretty enlightening. Anyways, I'll find out soon enough
  12. I just got off the phone with someone from Berkeley and he led me to believe that admits would arrive around the 10th of February.
  13. If that's the case, I'm surprised that there were people who got interviewed and rejected. On what grounds do they make a decision at that point?
  14. I know four people from hereabouts who got admits from Berkeley to study theory. Two of them had no interviews. The other two had one phone call each. [i say phone call and not interview since they both said they were not really questioned about anything technical.] Amongst the people who did not get admits, I do not know of anyone who got an interview call. There don't seem to be any noticeable trends here. Again, my sample set is really small. My call is scheduled to happen some time in the next few days. I'll try to glean some information if the chance arises.
  15. He did not imply anything either ways, good or bad. I know a friend who got an admit last year after such a call. Most people I've spoken to (my advisor included) told me such calls are generally non-technical chats about your interests, future plans, how keen you are about joining the university etc. (This is with respect to theory, I dunno how it works with other specializations) For instance, in the few minutes I spent speaking with him (he had a meeting or something) he asked me when I expected my Cambridge results to come out, what my research interests are etc. I am guessing that even when we do talk in detail, it will be less of an interview and more of "touching base with me" as he put it. I think we're reading too much into all this. The admits will come when they're nice and ready. Nit-picking about these things will only cause unnecessary mental trauma
  16. Thanks. I personally have no idea if they have shortlisted all potential candidates. I just got a mail from a professor there saying that he would like to talk before they made their final decisions. This could very well be because of some of my interests and future plans (I might go study math for a year at Cambridge before kicking off a PhD). So don't sweat it. You might very well be on the shortlist and they might not have had any reason to reach out to you
  17. Hi, I've got my CMU admit (got a call last weekend) and a mail from Berkeley that I am on their short list and that they want to chat before making admission decisions. Wish Princeton and MIT would get back just as quickly. Cheers, B.
