  1. Yes, I did get reviews. I was scared to look at them, but actually they're quite clear and fair. Apparently there were 160 proposals in total, and each panel reviewed 80. Of the 80 in my panel (March 23), here's the ranking breakdown: Competitive, High Priority: 4 proposals(5%) Competitive: 8 proposals (10%) Not Competitive, Needs Moderate Revision: 17 proposals (21%) Not Competitive, Needs Serious Revision: 51 proposals (64%) The review also says: Depending on budgetary constraints and the willingness and ability of other programs to participate in joint funding of meritorious proposals, the Cultural Anthropology Program anticipates recommending funding approximately 15-20% percent of the Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant proposals during this review cycle. I know this info doesn't really help with the anxiety of waiting, but it's something at least. :/
  2. I logged on to Fastlane this morning and saw that I have been declined. Good luck to everyone else!
  3. Thanks for the link. Good luck!
  4. Mine says "External Peer Review began on March 23", so I assumed that was my panel date. Is there an April panel? Browsing this thread, it looks like we might be in for a long wait.
  5. Hello, fellow anxious worriers. One of my classmates heard they were rejected a week ago. This Tuesday another one heard they were rejected. The emails went to their PI, not to them. I have not heard anything back, and my Fastlane status still says "pending." I was in the March 23 panel. Good luck to all.
  6. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, everyone. I was also sorry to hear the news. I would love to be in Seattle, but alas, Eigen's point about grouping students so as to offer more support for a larger cohort makes a lot of sense.
  7. Hello, aspiring anthro grad students. I'm wondering if anyone out there knows what the story is on the University of Washington's move to accepting sociocultural PhD students EVERY OTHER year. Do you think it's a money-saving move, or a department politics decision, or something else? From their website: "Archaeology and Biocultural Anthropology admissions will be run every year, however, Sociocultural Anthropology has moved to an every other year model admitting students in the odd numbered year. Next admission cycle for Sociocultual Anthropology will be for Autumn 2013."
  8. If anyone out there is still waiting to hear if they've made it in off the waiting list, I was told by a professor that they're hoping that more TA opportunities will be released, enabling them to admit more students. So hang in there. I guess the good news is that if you make it in, you're guaranteed to have funding.
  9. I heard back from the grad coordinator that the process is ongoing, and that they hope to send word by the end of the month. Hey, after three months of agony, what's one more week?
  10. Hello, I emailed the grad coordinator today to find out about notification timeframe. I'll let you know if I hear anything.
  11. Thought I would pass the time waiting for a response from UCSC by owning up to being a cultural anthropologist. I'm a fan of Anna Tsing's work, but I'm also interested in working with Mark Anderson or Andrew Matthews. My interest is in indigenous mobilization related to conservation and development projects, primarily in Latin America. Good luck to everyone still waiting on admissions decisions. Sounds like some of you have some nice offers already--well done!
  12. I too am waiting to hear from UCSC. I am tempted to write to the grad coordinator and ask where they are in their decision process, but the website says "Please wait for Grad Admissions to contact you". Seems like a firm "be patient!".
