I would say definitely try to do an honors project or a senior thesis; I know that really stands out to the adcoms. Maybe a summer research internship if you can secure one. Good letters of rec Tailor you personal statement to each school; that will help you and the school assess fit.

do you guys think it would be more beneficial if over the summer, i tried to learn some basics of spss or sas from books (like andy field's discovering stats using spss) or if i took a class in stats to brush up before this fall? i have some background in these but i'm not exceptionally strong in either. boo. any input would be appreciated! thanks!

So, I just received an email stating that I am an "alternate candidate" for admission into a program. I'm a little confused as to what exactly that means..Is that the same thing as a first alternate or is it just another phrase for the wait list? any input would be appreciated. thanks!

I would recommend that you go ahead and accept TC's offer and then if/ when you get accepted to Columbia, you can go ahead and just let TC know that you will be attending Columbia when the time arises; I highly doubt they'll be offended bc I'm sure this kind of stuff happens al the time. Yeah you would lose the $300 deposit but it's worth it in the grand scheme of things. It's better to be confirmed somewhere than to be in a tough situation later.

If you didn't get an email saying you are on the waitlist, maybe that means that they'll be sending your acceptance letter next week! Especially if you were high on the waitlist last year, I think you have a pretty good shot this year! Good luck!!

Basically, a summer volunteer trip (summer 2011) that I was supposed to take got cancelled due to lack of interest in the trip. I added this to the volunteer experience portion of my resume, since I thought it may look good due to the extensive fundraising efforts necessary to participate. Since the organization cancelled the trip, how should I go about contacting the schools to let them know I'm not going anymore? I don't want schools to later revoke their acceptance because I didn't update them about something like this. Any advice would be appreciated!

yeah I think they do conduct interviews for phd applicants, (at least for the social/ org program).
