  1. Many congrats to everyone that was accepted to some fantastic programs. There was definitely a lot of heavy competition this year. I'll be waiting on possible funding at UCLA and I guess, worst case, I go back for open studies for a year or two and get my Latin and Greek up. Just wondering if anyone in the thread is in archaeology - if I'm tracking things correctly it seems most posters have been language or history paths thus far.
  2. Indeed! I was really hoping to be able to work with Dr. Ober but, who knows, it could just be he doesn't have room for another student. I'd rather get a rejection because of that than get accepted onto an overloaded prof (something several departments at Alberta do FAR too much). Once that official letter comes around I'll start inquiring. I'm guessing my delayed finish time in the MA didn't help - that's what happens when you get comfy in a well paying full time job in a borked economy while you're trying to finish a thesis. Being out of the application game for a while means parts of my SoP were perhaps rusty. Ah well, I already have Plan B of open studies and language, language, language ready to go for next year in the worst case Unfortunately I have no info on Chicago.
  3. Wow! Congratulations! I guess that means no Stanford for me...at least this year I'll take rejection in stride and contact the people I was talking to in the fall, see what I can do to improve my application, and go from there. In the meantime I'll hope for UCLA funding and hold out for Penn and Brown results.
  4. I think one never knows as there are four distinct streams in the Classics program and some may require the attention of certain members of faculty vs. others. Nevertheless I would expect that the results will start to come out over the next few days for all fields. There's even the question of in what order they're notifying people. By program? Alphabetically? That is, I hope at least..... /gulp
  5. There's quite a few places in Canada that have excellent programs. It really depends on what your area of interest is. ie. Simon Frasier for West Coast, Alberta for plains, Calgary for Mesoamerica, etc.
  6. From what I understand the funding at Oxford (and basically all UK schools) is somewhat lacking, particularly when you compare it with the system in the States. They're very much funded by the government so naturally it is British citizens that reap the most from both domestic tuition rates and scholarship opportunities. Here in Canada many people that get into Oxford rely upon a Commonwealth scholarship. I could be completely out to lunch on the matter since I didn't investigate the matter all that indepth.....
  7. Probably not directly related since Philology is over in the Dept of Classics and Archaeologists are through the Interdepartmental program. Nevertheless, if the application deadlines were similar then it would seem logical that both groups are deliberating at the moment.
  8. Basically I'm a digger, not a linguist. With my BA a double honours and my MA an IntD program there wasn't much room for languages past two years of Latin and one year of Greek. Being a good Canadian I also have French down, although it's a bit rusty. I really need to get modern Greek down - it's horrible having only a basic grasp on it after working there so many years. I feel that a lot of my colleagues that were in Classics and Classics alone here have a lot more Latin/Greek courses under the belt. On the flip side, I have a lot more anthropology and theory...all a trade off. I would suggest giving them a ring. Don't leave it to just assuming...you never know. At the very least giving them a call would give an opportunity to express your frustraition over the system. I wonder if they're even aware it deletes the data like that.
  9. Excellent. I'll give them a poke on Monday just to double check. It's true - I got the same impression from email conversations with both Ober and Trimble. I'm very jealous you got to visit! I really considered it, but the flight alone from Edmonton would be $500-600 give or take. Nevertheless, I'll never get those four GRE hours of my life back. They also put my language worries somewhat to rest. I find it overly frustraiting that Archaeology programs seem to be rarely clear on just what they expect for languages vs. the rest of Classics. I focus quite a bit on miltary structures, landscape analysis of possible regional defense systems and am looking at moving more towards examining the concept of identity at a regional level in the 7th to 4th centuries. In specific, the identity of Thessaly and how/if it was expressed...not only as a region but I'm also curious as to how the various poleis of the region viewed themselves and the region. Naturally there are some towers lying about in the area which I'm thinking may tie in with political changes in the 4th century...something akin to what Ober outlines in Fortress Attica. That's it in a nutshell Heard back from my friend and she mentioned she was notified mid-February.
  10. @alyssa33 Thanks for the congrats! It's been definitely a nail biter. I took my time in the MA program here at Alberta for various reasons and was worried that would kick me in the butt. I'm still rather worried about languages in regards to my other applications. Don't even get me started on the GRE, haha. I didn't apply to Michigan on the basis of Faculty. My supervisor and I sat down way back in August and identified 10 places with good/excellent programs and then I whittled the list down to four based upon where I thought I could get support for my research goals. For that reason Stanford is top of my list (Josiah Ober). Also I wanted to keep my application expenditures down to around $400, especially after the $200 ETS charged (did I mention I hate the GRE?). As for when the rest of them make decisions you and I are thinking the same. That mid-Feb point seems to be the magic time for acceptance notices. I just emailed a friend who is at Brown asking her to poke around. OH, by the way....did you get that transcript upload error on Penn's application? I'm wondering if I should phone them and confirm they got my transcripts.
  11. For any archaeologists in here it looks like UCLA/Cotsen is sending out decisions. I received an acceptance on Thursday but no funding decisions have been made. That will come about in March. Now I sit back and anxiously wait to hear from Stanford, Penn, and Brown......
  12. It looks like Cotsen decisions are coming out across the board. I received an acceptance email on Thursday afternoon (Jan 27) and almost fell off my chair....had to read it about three times to make sure I wasn't dreaming. Nothing has been decided for funding - those decisions for the incoming cohort will take place at March 1st at the earliest. Now to wait to see what Stanford Classics, Penn's AAMW, and Brown have to say
