Ah. Good luck.
Nope. I'm just going to have to wait until I can fly out there and hope to strike gold.
-
I know I'm late posting, but I too am going to be starting at the Dept. of English this fall. I'm with you on the new place, new people, apartment-finding anxiety. I'm going to try and visit early June (that's the earliest I can get there) and I'm hoping that won't be too late. Urgh. Have you folks made any headway on finding apartments etc?
-
I'm going to be around. I'll only be around from late Thursday-ish (ha! of course I mean I'll be there alter today). Ugh, sorry...I was out of here for a while. The semester is slowly engulfing me.
*bump*
Are people still up for meeting at PCA/ACA? I was going to pm all of you, but there are quite a few of us! It's hard to narrow in on a time and place since there's so much going on, but hopefully we can all work something out - would be great to meet you guys in person (although I suspect that I met one of you last week).
-
Congratulations, Edelweiss!
I'm the comics admit. I don't know how many applications they received or how many people were accepted, but Dr. Wegner mentioned that I was "one of the first" to be notified. I'm not sure if that's helpful or not, but there it is.
-
Thanks, Chris. And good luck to you!
My information is third-hand, but just to keep a glimmer of hope alive for the rhetoric and composition applicants, I heard from somebody that they were just getting to those decisions last week.
Super congrats saususndbraus, weatherwax, and anyone else who got an acceptance. That's amazing and commendable, considering those numbers!
-
Congrats on the acceptance, sausundbraus!
My acceptance letter had the following statistics attached to it:
560 applications
45 spots
8% acceptance: "one of the largest and most competitive applicant pools ever"
This is a rough year for applications.

Good luck, you guys! And going by stuff around here, you will be better than fine :-)
OMG yes! I know I'll suddenly have no idea what to say, what questions to ask, etc and just be super awkward! I've only been out of school for a year, but I'm worried that my brain has atrophied or something. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.
To both of you: I'm also incredibly nervous about visiting schools (I'm not going to Minnesota, though). I'm really glad it's not just me. I've been out for two years, and I made a massive, impossible reading list so I can fill in major gaps and basically just not seem quite as dumb as I might otherwise. Ack! But as my mom pointed out, they're not interviewing us. They won't be saying, "So, what do you think of such-and-such important theorist?" We're already accepted. At least, that's what I tell myself.
Good to know there's a few of us with the jitters. I also bought some books by the people I want to work with to read, though I've read a lot of their work before (and used it), it's been awhile and I figured it might be good luck to have them. I bought a couple of Frank Whigham's books before I heard from UTA, so I only got 1/2 lucky I guess . . . sigh. Oh well. Good luck to all of us at these visits!
-
Congratulations, you two!
Hi, that was me -- just got a phone call from the department chair.
I was rejected from Brown today so this was nice compensation!
Best of luck to all of you!!
I was also accepted, and was the one to post the stats/info on the results board. Method was phone call.
15/500+ accepted; $23,622/yr for 5 years with no teaching duties; $1,000 one-time stipend for help relocating and setup; ~$5,000/yr(or semester?) for optional teaching (two 1-hour sections a semester, I think?) starting in year 3.
Also, visit weekend is close, on March 3rd/4th.
E-mails and official letters to come
-
I received my rejection this morning. :-( Oh well.
-
Congratulations, Jordan!
I just got an acceptance voicemail this morning from admissions. So Florida doesn't accept PhD applicants if you just have a BA? I had forgotten.
Anyway, that's pretty much the last notification for the fifteen schools I applied to.
-
Congrats, tortola!
Just got in at the professional writing program, with quite a bit of funding
I'm going to grad school! Regardless of whether any of these PhD programs work out for me.
-
Thanks lyoness and transcendental. Unfortunately, the mail was very brief. No information except to say that the official letter was in the post.
I wonder if other Purdue lurkers may have heard something else?
This is pretty much my only admit for the season and so, it still hasn't sunk in yet. I probably won't believe it till I actually have the letter in me hands.
Congrats weatherwax!
Hi weatherwax, saw your message earlier and hadn't been on an actual computer to respond until now. Congrats! Did you get any info on number of class size or anything? I have a feeling that all of the acceptances went out but I think they are a little weird with their waiting lists.
-
I'm one of those. I'm stunned and staring at my email for the moment - and I applied to the Theory & Cultural Studies program.
And a couple more today (though one is maybe from the other day. Is anybody else going to claim a Purdue admit?
-
I just received an email that I'm on the wait list. No idea how long it is, but hoping I receive an offer of admission, as I think that this program is my best fit. Best of luck to everyone else--I hope you're accepted to much better programs so that I can go to CMU!
Ooh! That's still something. Congratulations, cread. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. I haven't heard a peep from them and I don't know what to make of it. Any statistics in the email that you got?
-
I just saw an actual admit posted for CMU today. Would the person who was accepted care to elaborate on how the phone call went? Did they make it sound as if they had made their final decisions already?
And now, a wait-list notification.
Congratulations and good luck to the person wait-listed! Are you lurking about here, perhaps?
Also, anyone else hear anything yet?
-
This was actually in my top 2 choices. I was lucky enough to be accepted, and blown away when I got the Chancellor's Fellowship (29 K first year, and 30 K after that--thats including 16K for TAship). I really like the faculty and dept. at UCR. Prof. Zieger has been very supportive of my interest in cultural criticism of medicine and literature.
Can't wait to go the open house.
Still waiting on USC--probably a no, and UCSB
Congratulations! That is a handsome offer and I'm excited for you. (You research does sound fascinating.)
And to you as well, truckbasket. Congratulations!
-
My U.G. GPA is very high, GRE is decent. Writing sample and SOP were both pretty strong. I think it was more about fit as I do transdisciplinary stuff with aesthetics and culture and what-not. In case anyone is wondering, it's a $15k fellowship for the first year, and four years TA at about $17k.
Congratulations!
Yeah, one of my recs also mentioned that the program (like most others, I suppose) was more about fit than about the stats. But it helps to know.
This program was one of my top choices :-/ Oh well.
You didn't by any chance hear how many admits went out etc, did you?
-
I saw a couple of acceptances posted. Congratulations! Anyone around here claiming these?
-
Still no word from Duke (Lit program) even though many others have received rejections and interview invites. Could I be waitlisted? I am very, very tempted to call up the department and inquire into my status, but I worry that I'd be committing a serious faux pas. Should I just sit tight and wait for a response? Or is it okay for me to contact admissions?
Cquin, I've applied to the Lit program as well. But since the campus-visit invites have been sent out (apparently), I'm guessing that the waitlist, if any will be from among that group. For what it's worth, I've decided to wait this out. Good luck, though!

I'll be at PCA this spring, as well! I'm presenting on female criminality in Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret and the Victorian press. It's so great to hear from other people that are going. I'd love to meet up with anyone that would be interested--I don't know anyone else going, but I am very excited about San Antonio.
I'm also in the process of applying for ASFS.
lmnf26, I'm with you. It is good to hear from others going to be at the PCA/ACA. And San Antonio sounds like fun. Schedule permitting, we should try to meet up!
-
I, too, will be at the PCA/ACA. I'll be on a Computer Culture panel that discusses the relationships between Deleuze and Guattari's work and cyberculture. What are y'all working on there?
Ssundva, I'm going to try and attend your presentation. I've recently started to work on electronic literature and posthumanism, and this sounds fantastic.
-
I'm presenting on how Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" is a satire of mourning practices in 18th/19th century America. What are you working on? If we are there at the same time, we should meet up. I'll let you know when exactly I'll be there once the schedule comes out.
I'm working on Masculinities in China Mieville's "Perdido Street Station". Yeah, I'm waiting for the schedule as well. Perhaps something will work out.
@the once and future grad - I don't suppose you've heard anything of your schedule?
(edited: for spelling)

I saw in the Weekend Worriers post that there are a few people going to the CEA conference in March, and I was wondering if anyone else had plans for conferences this spring. I'll be at the PCA/ACA in San Antonio in April. I went to the conference in St. Louis last year, which was actually the first conference that I presented at, and had a great time. Just wondering what everyone else was up to.
I'm going to be at the PCA/ACA as well! I was also at the St. Louis conference and it was my first time presenting at a conference as well. What will you be working on? Maybe we should meet up in person there?
-
So this is crazy, right? I shouldn't call and ask Duke what the process is, right? I'm crawling out of my skin so I question all decisions at this point. . .Would you all advise I NOT call?
In the same state and I'm telling myself to hang in there. We'll know soon enough, right?

I'm wondering if any of you folks know whether it is possible to commute from Indianapolis to Purdue?
I'm trying to figure out options so that I don't have to commute to Chicago every weekend to see my s.o. and thus far, moving to Indianapolis seems to be the best idea.
I'd be happy for any advice / inputs that anyone can offer!
