  1. Is everyone planning on bringing a lot of new work with them?

Hadn't planned on it–my portfolio is all from within the past 10 months anyway. Trying to travel light!

Oh, and they said to bring a disc of work so I'm assuming you can add new work to that.

    Good luck, all!

  2. OMG! I JUST CHECKED MY RUTGERS STATUS AND I HOPE IT ISN'T WRONG. It finally had something besides "No decision."

    itsaysigotin.

One of my last two hopes.

Summary of today: woke up to UCSD rejection, came home to UC Berkeley rejection, checked online for my first acceptance.

Congrats! That's super exciting. Just curious–when did you submit your app? Notifications have been so all over the place and I'm wondering if they're rolling admissions. Would have been good to know that in advance, ha. Anyway–congratulations again!

  3. Just thought I'd start a new topic for us SMFA interviewees to talk out our concerns/preparations. Big question: are you bringing/shipping physical artwork? The e.mail says it's optional, so I was wondering what everyone plans on doing.

People also seem concerned about clothing. I plan on wearing 'nice' causal clothes with newish sneakers. Pretty much what I've worn to two other interviews with no negative consequences.

Last thing, these links may help you prepare:

    Good luck!

  4. Right, but earlier I thought someone had said they had sent out interviews. I imagine they wouldn't continue sending e-mails to people in the rejection pool.

Yeah, I think that they'll continue to bombard us with information until all of this is over. Not to be a pessimist or anything, but I wouldn't read too much into it.

Anyway, a positive attitude is always helpful and inspiring! Good luck with your applications!

  5. I have an interview at SMFA on March 5th. MFA (Painting).

It says in the email that you can select your preferred faculty for the interview. I was wondering if anyone that has attended an interview or the school could provide some info about the faculty members and/or how they conducted the interview?

I'm not familiar with the faculty and would like a little more info than what's listed online before making a selection.

Also, anyone interview before - what q's did they ask? I've heard it's pretty laid back compared to some other schools with interviews

Maybe I'll see a few of you there in March! Now, for a hotel reservation!

(And have to arrange to ship my artwork)

Also have an interview on March 5th. I found this blog with some helpful tips from a current student:

  6. SAIC doesn't stipulate anything about sharing work from one discipline to another, and the faculty in different areas don't check up on that stuff.

to Another: if you get an interview in sculpture let me know who you are when you get here.

Ah! Thanks for clarifying–good to know! I can see a school not wanting the exact same portfolio repeated, but I can't see why certain pieces can't be used in multiple portfolios if they make sense across media/departments.

    Anyway, thanks and good luck!

  7. I submitted mostly the same work to all three departments. It's hard for me to fit into any one department because my practice is naturally interdisciplinary. My work is basically process oriented and very tied up in exploring materials and their various properties. I'm an object maker, but the things I make tend to defy categories. My portfolio includes a lot of what might be thought of as drawings, but I tend to describe them in traditionally sculptural terms. All my work is formally very tightly controlled, and even the work across different materials is clearly related.

Anyway, if I got accepted to any one of those departments I'd likely be working in all three.

Oh, I totally understand why you'd submit to multiple departments. I was just curious since I had hoped to do the same, but most schools explicitly stated that they required separate and distinct portfolios for each. Just curious...

  8. I got a rejection letter in the mail today from SAIC. I applied for 3 different departments, but the letter specifically says it's from the Fiber and Material Studies department. I guess that means I'm still waiting to hear from Painting and Drawing and Sculpture. Anybody else in the same boat?

Did you have three distinct bodies of work? Most schools require separate portfolios for each department you apply to. If so, that's an impressive amount of work!

  9. Just to clarify, I think these rankings are interesting to look at, it shows the schools' reputation and influence. Just because I find it interesting to view doesn't prove or mean I applied to schools based solely on rankings. I am not encouraging applicants to apply based solely on rankings either. In over 2 years, I visited schools, did research, looked at faculty work and students work, took into consideration location, financial factors, etc. to find out what school is the best fit for me and my work.

I agree on all points then! Rankings just have a tendency to be problematic when followed as definitive guide to which school is "best."

  10. If you're applying to school based solely on its ranking, you're probably applying for the wrong reasons. Take rankings with a grain of salt and be sure to do some legitimate research on each school. Just my thoughts.

  11. Congratulations! Did you do an interview before your acceptance? Is that where you're planning on attending? Once again, congrats!

Thanks so much! Yes, I interviewed over the phone last week and it went really well. Tyler is certainly at the top of my list, but I won't make a decision until I hear back from everywhere (need to see how the financial aid works out too).

Congrats and good luck at your MICA interview! I know someone else interviewing for the program too–she's super excited by the prospect of working with Ellen Lupton. Sounds like a great program.

  12. So if I didn't hear from SMFA today about an interview do you think I'm rejected?

It's hard to say, but since it's one studio arts program versus several departments, I'd imagine they sent all notifications today. But, who really knows. These schools seem a little unorganized at times, ha.
