I'm on the inside (doing my MA here) and I don't even know. I can tell you for certain that I know at LEAST four people have been accepted, and they were not all accepted at the same time. I have no idea whether any of those people are the same people who have posted on the results board, but I don't think UVa is one of the places that does a mass notification of acceptance. At least it doesn't seem that way. But who knows!

Any word on UNC at Chapel Hill?
the giaour replied to Hermione's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
To whom does that recent acceptance post belong? Or is it an acceptance from some North Carolina other than UNC Chapel Hill...? Anybody else heard anything? Congrats to the admittee either way! -
All I meant was that it's unclear what "two of the first doctoral candidates accepted in the admissions process" meant, because it left room to infer that there had been other acceptances as well. In fact, I do know now that there have been offers made to more than just the two Jefferson Fellow interviewees. So...

Hey, englishgrad11, congratulations! I'm envious of your email--the only reason I know I've been accepted is because I checked the website. If you wouldn't mind sharing, did your email say anything else that might be interesting to the rest of us who are still waiting to be contacted? From your post it seems like perhaps they didn't tell you much else, but I think we're all anxious to hear about visiting/funding/etc. Congrats again! Can't wait to hear more from them! -
They're doctoral candidates. They're here because they're interviewing for the Jefferson fellowship. But like byronlover said, the adcom still has at *least* one more meeting to go. The email described them as "two of the first doctoral candidates accepted in the admissions process"--whatever that means.

PhD applications were due Jan 15... who knows what's going on. -

Yes... visiting and funding. Especially given what's been said about funding in years past. I wonder if it will be any different now that the Literary Studies track is single-trajectory, with no terminal MA. -

I just checked the My UW portal again this morning, and it's finally updated to say I've been admitted, for sure. Definitely made me feel better (was beginning to think I had read the "recommended for admission" paragraph incorrectly) so thought I'd let others know who were possibly in the same situation. -

Thank you so much--it's still pretty unbelievable! And my stats: I applied to the Literary Studies program. I'll have my MA in lit from the University of Virginia in May (if all goes well!)--my area of focus is 19th-c. British/textual studies/digital humanities, and my GPA is 3.96. GREs: Verbal--690; Quantitative--650; Writing--5.0; Lit--660 Really not terribly fantastic numbers, so it must be true what they say: numbers are only a small part! Good luck to everyone! -

Yes! Thank you thank you thank you intextrovert, for your help. I think I might actually be able to sleep tonight, now! Congrats once again to the admits, and very best of luck to everyone still waiting! -

Okay, I feel better knowing someone else, somewhere else, sees the same thing. For a while I couldn't believe the text in that box had changed at all--I'm still thinking I don't believe it, but it's definitely reassuring to know you've got the same situation. I guess I just feel... incredulous? Congrats on your (very, very probable) acceptance, papillon! -

Congrats to all acceptances! I have a favor to ask of you, if you have a moment-- After reading about all the recent acceptances, I went to check my status. The "My UW-Madison Grad Application Status" (under student services) still says "Pending," but when I clicked on the "Enter>>" link and got the Graduate School page, the box labeled "Status Description" says this: "Your program has recommended you for admission. The Graduate School will be reviewing your file. Please refer to this page for updates." I asked my two roommates if they think this means an admission. They think it does. I think it's still too ambiguous. Can anybody help me out? If you're still waiting, or if you have been admitted, does your "Status Description" say something different? I really wish it were 12 hours later so I could call and ask! Any help would be greatly appreciated... thanks! -
Ohio State acceptances

My page still says "in review" too... Or it did yesterday, anyway--they're "performing maintenance" right now, apparently. -
I'm finishing my MA at UVa this spring, and as far as I know the adcom isn't finished meeting. All three of my recommenders are on the adcom, so I feel like I kind of have a feel for what they're up to, but I could be wrong. And just for help in timing, I got my MA acceptance on March 17. Most of the PhDs I know got in off the waitlist, so they didn't actually hear until very close to (or on) April 15. Best of luck to you all! It's really a fantastic program with AMAZING faculty.

I have a theory about alphabetical elimination, too. I think those of us at the end of the alphabet (I'm an S) have more panic time than those at the beginning. For sure. I'm also in the same boat with you on OSU... figuring end of alphabet = later rejection. But good luck to you! -

Me too. Why can't they update everybody's at once? Every time I have to go through that stupid drop-down menu and wait for the screen to show I about die... and then feel like an idiot, because obviously it's just going to change over to "denied." Hurry up, UW-Madison. -

Ha! Good to know I'm not the only one who thinks the alphabetical scheme is likely... and given that feeling I'd say you deserve to be cautiously optimistic, for sure! I would be. I wish MY last name started with something before "L." Thanks for the info re: your experience last year, durkin! and much luck to you, too! -
Hey all--so I'm at the end of the alphabet and am convinced that's why I haven't gotten an email telling me I was rejected. Results board shows they only took 3 out of 150 (so... impossible odds... but what acceptance isn't a miracle in terms of odds?) and am just wondering whether people who HAVE gotten their emails were in the first half of the alphabet? Or does anybody know for a fact that alphabetical organization matters/doesn't matter in terms of response time? I'm totally aware that I am likely inventing things. Also, is there a way to check the status online? I couldn't figure it out, if there is. Which might say something about whether I should be admitted to (a further) grad program.
