  1. This was my second year in grad school and I was eligible (and received HM). he NSF wording is definitely confusing though. It says you must have no more than 1 year (12 months) of full-time graduate study. At the time of application, I only had to submit transcripts for the first year since fall courses were still in progress and technically not complete. This left me with only one year of study and eligible. Some faculty at my institution advised that you could be eligible if you had less than 24 grad credits at the time of application. So if students transferred in stuff from somewhere else or took extra courses it could hurt them, but one can always do the extra essay to make their case for eligibility. So bottom line, do apply your second year. But we warned that they judge second years to a higher standard. Be sure to get more publications, conference presentations, and reseach experience, etc...
  2. RE: rating sheets, there should be a link in the email NSF sent out this morning. the email also has the username and password you'll need. I was hoping the percentile rankings would be more exact or at least a narrower range. I was listed at 79-93 percentile and got HM. My ratings were Intell Merit E/VG/VG and BI E/VG/VG. Two were very enthusiastic about my overall application (one even said I wrote a "model proposal"), which puzzles as to why reviewer#2 checked the VG box and not Excellent. Oh well, the third reviewer was less excited about my proposal and had one point of critical contention that I'll keep in mind in future work. I find it interesting how the comments seemed to focus solely on the proposal and I'm guessing two of the reviewers pretty much only read that part. I felt like the strongest part of my application was the broader impacts stuff I've done that was highlighted in essay 1. But the reviewers only commented on broader impacts of the proposal itself. If I was doing this again (and I can't next year) I'd spend more of my effort and energy on the proposal (which you know I did, but I guess even more).
  3. wow, i'm still in shock that the names are actually up on the site, no email or nothing. but my intution about which day I would hear was correct. plus i got an honorable mention... but i'm still really disappointed congrats to those who won! for the rest of us, at least the waiting is over.
  4. as far as i can tell from this year and previous years, they are going to notify everyone at the same time (rejects, accepts, and honorable mentions). i do know that people who's applications are deemed ineligible (and therefore weren't considered) may have already been notified. this happened to friend of mine a few year's ago because her work was deemed to much of a medical nature.
  5. did any of you apply last year? this is my first time and my last year of eligibility, so it's a one shot deal for me.
  6. seems like a hard choice. environment is important, but so is funding. were the arrogant/tardy profs the ones you wanted to work with? i'd probably base the decision based on the person you'd most likely want as your advisor and what his/her students are like. these are the people you'd be spending the most time with. best of luck!
  7. Anyone want to make any bets about when we will hear? Maybe if I don't get the award, I can solace myself by correctly guessing when notifications go out. I'm guessing tomorrow, March 23 at around 5 pm EST, but that is probably just wishful thinking. Truly if it is not tomorrow I might go mad. Is anyone else consumed by the anticipation?
  8. I totally understand your pain... the waiting is killing me. I'm guessing we won't hear until next week, but I just want to know now. I'm afraid to admit that it is consuming a great bit of my thoughts when I should be working on my thesis. I felt like I put together a strong application, but I too worry about my undergrad gpa not being good enough. As far as the % for HM I think the top third at least get HM or awarded (that's what one of the former reviewers at my campus said). But it may vary by discipline. Good luck!
  9. There are two threads under "The Bank" section that might interest you--particularly the one from last year which documents everyone waiting to hear and how the results were announced. From the previous threads it appears that announcements are made by email, all at the same time (within a few hours at least). Last year they were made on March 30, the year before things dragged on into April. Some years have been as early as March 16, but I'm guessing we are going to have to wait another week or two. The waiting is driving me a little crazy though... Good luck!
