Need some advice from people who have been in my position.
psychopath@100 replied to Amogh's topic in Computer Science
You have two options: 1) Work as an RA with some prof, and land up in a unfunded MS here (not to say, an average university considering you are not from IIT or NIT). 2) Study really hard for GATE, get into IIT or IISc for MS and MTech (considering they are mostly exam based, not prior research exp. required, it should be easy to crack). Do very well in your undergrad, probably be in top 2 or 5%, that will help you in getting MS and PhD. During MTech, not only you will get involved in research, but also have papers, personal recommendation from IIT professors, and better chances of getting into a funded program at top-notch university. What matters is research experience, internationally published work and good references from known faculty. To me, the second option would be more preferable than the first. However, if you are looking for high-paying job in US, above things do not apply. Its mostly for someone who ultimately wants to be in research and aims for a PhD. -
UIUC ECE PhD results will be out tomorrow on 03/15/2011. Good Luck every one...

Got accepted to the CS PhD program with TA funding and Alumni Excellence Award. Got accepted for ECE as well without funding. But think I'll go for Cornell... -
Hello, I have received PhD admits from Cornell (w/ fellowship) and UT Austin (w/ TA I guess) in their respective ECE department. My research interest is in Computer Architecture. What do you think is better? Thanks

Glad that I am rejected... I wouldn't have selected Stanford's unfunded offer and their conspiracy in chucking me out through their rigorous quals process after one year...

EE Stanford is notorious for not giving funded offers even to PhD students. Only very rare students get fellowship. RA and TA are next to impossible for an incoming PhD student. http://ee.stanford.e...issions.php?p=6 They generally give unfunded PhD offers or give Master's instead to earn more money over the course of time. After 1st year, they will allow around 50-70% students through their rigorous quals process. In this, students are required to clear 10 oral interviews each lasting for 10 minutes. Decisions are politically motivated and are given to those who generally have source of funding from their advisors irrespective of their performance in the quals exam. Here's the past years statistics. http://ee.stanford.edu/phd/quals/stats.php So, if your background is not in EE, and you have other offers, think twice before going to Stanford just because of brand name. It's a very good university, no doubt. When one enters the department, he gets a sense of historical things developed primarily in Stanford, but the idea of EE department of hiring everyone, and chucking them one by one based on quals, and earning a hefty amount during one's first year is gruesome...

Cornell PhD in CS: Do they conduct interviews?
psychopath@100 replied to Cosmic's topic in Computer Science
Awesome... I'm going to prepare that for my Berkeley reject. On the contrary, now I understand why MIT puts up the results in their website and doesn't have the balls to inform us through emails. -
I called them this Thursday and asked specifically if there any more acceptances remaining that haven't been notified yet? The reply was don't have high expectations. They will inform all of us by this month end or March first week...
