That's a good idea. I'll look into that!
  2. Right. I hope they don't have some kind of process in which they say one person admitted is more important than another. I mean, it's in the same program for the same degree so I'd think it should be equal. Oh well. It's not a big deal really, I just was curious about how that thing worked.
  3. I'm within 8 hours, but I have to fly because I'm visually impared and can't drive, so that wouldn't be fair... I don't know if it's that, or that this person found out 2 days before I did and maybe they ran out of money by the time they admitted me? I don't know but geez it cost me 700 dollars! It's a good thing it's the only place I'm visiting!
  4. So, it seems that someone else was offered admission to USC's public history MA, and was told that they would pay for travel expenses down to their Open House. USC told me that they couldn't pay for anything. What's up with that?
  5. The only thing I can really think of to say is that you would probably be better off sticking to a large metropolitan area instead of small towns or even small cities. New York City and LA come to mind. There are so many ethnicities, races, sexual orientations, etc., that I would think people would be more likely to accept something out of the ordinary. I would also do research about the political leaning of different areas. It's a stereotype and not always true, but often the blue states are less conservative than the red ones.
  6. Are you going to SC's visit day this Friday? If you are, we should talk.
  7. For my two cents, and to throw a curve to the results, the ONLY school that i did not contact a professor or have any contact with secretaries, anything, was the ONLY school at which I was accepted.

It sounds great! Except for the car thing. I was worried about that. I can't drive, so public transportation is going to be my big issue anywhere I go. But USC is my only option, so I suppose I'll have to make the best of it, or else pray that I have a very understanding roommate. I want to avoid being so dependent on other people, but I seriously doubt I can afford calling a cab every time I need to go somewhere... Thanks for the info! I'll let you know if I have any other questions.

Does anyone know anything about Columbia? Specifically, is there a good bus system? Is there a specific area where grad students usually live? Where are the bad areas of the city that one would not want to go? Is there any culture in the city, ie. bookstores, theater, etc? I'm from a really small town, so I'm a little worried about being in a state capital. Any info anyone has would be much appreciated!!!
  10. All my hopes and dreams Put in a basket and thrown against a brick wall.
  11. I don't know. I'd kind of prefer a history flavored nerd, but if I found one that I could at least have some interests in common with, that'd be good. I don't think I could really converse with a bio med student.
  12. Aw, I love you too! And, if he is that constant listener you were talking about, I definitely agree with the others in saying "go for it!" I'm the cautious type that would over-analyze what my happen if you do get accepted after becoming attached... but, I've also not had as much fun in my life as I'd like and certainly haven't found Mr. Nerd-love Extraordinaire. I think "tempting the fates" is a good idea. You never know what might happen! I don't think I've met the endangered species type yet, so I can't vouch for whether they work out or not. I have met a nerd that I would love to have a relationship with. We've been friends for four years and he's always been able to intellectually meet me and has been there when I needed to vent or when I was going through a bad stage. But he's not interested in dating... so... he's like the endangered species that is just out of my reach. If you have that guy and he feels the same about you, sometimes it takes a risk to see what could possibly happen. Like you said, it may go nowhere, but it could also take you everywhere you've ever wanted to go.
  13. OMG THAT IS AWESOME! So cute! He sounds like a keeper! A good complimenter on top of a history nerd! If he's blonde, I think you've found my perfect man and should send him along! Hah, just kidding. He's yours... but still.. you go girl! I'd almost be tempted to see what happens even if you did get an acceptance. On the other hand, Iowa and SC are both far away from Nevada... Aw, I'm sitting here going "awwwwwwwwww".
  14. Amen to that! I am in an intellectual black hole in this town! At least when it comes to something other than hunting or beer.
  15. That is so sweet! I definitely know what you mean in avoiding the opposite sex. I'd probably be feeling the same way, but on the other hand, you never know if you two will end up married or date for a month and then break up. Everything is so up in the air in this point in our lives.
