  1. Hi everybody! I chose UIUC. It was a very tough decision, because Warwick really is a top UK university and I could work with a very good professor there. However, the research in UIUC fits my current interests better, so I'm heading to USA this autumn. Thanks for the interest and the suggestions. I hope you have been admitted to some of your favorite programs:)
  2. Thank you for the answers! Some of the universities matched my interests very well and were recommended to me by my tutor and my friends (I've studied mainly analytic number theory so far) - Stanford, Oxford, UCLA, Michigan, Illinois, Bristol... The others were recommended by US News and The Guardian Rankings. However, I'm pretty sure that there is Number Theory Research in every TOP university, even though not necessarily analytic. I've always been thinking about doing a PhD in a top university and now feel crushed... Today is the deadline. P.S.V=Verbal (words), Q=Quantitative (very stupid problems), A=Analytical (essay), M=Mathematics (subject test)
  3. Hello everybody and sorry for the stupid hype-up title! I'll try to make as concise as possible... Here's my story: I'm interested in Mathematics and live in Eastern Europe. I was pretty good as a high-school student, even got a Gold at IMO. However, after high-school I didn't apply for abroad and began BSc in my home country. After the BSc I began working with a great professor in the university, so got also a MSc from there. I had very good GPA (5.9/6), some additional prizes from mathematical Olympiads and one joint article, so I decided that I should finally apply for some better universities in USA and UK. I took some big loans, studied English for several months, passed the GRE GENERAL and SUBJECT TESTS with very good results (V89%/Q94%/A26%/M94%) and tried my luck with: USA - Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, Berkeley, Chicago, Michigan, UCLA, CalTech, Illinois Urbana-Champaign; UK - Oxford, Cambridge, Warwick, Imperial, Bristol. Finally, I got accepted at Illinois and Warwick, Oxford accepted me without funding (I have to look for scholarship/sponsors by myself) and Stanford waitlisted me, but now it seems unlikely to admit me, no respond from Cambridge yet. These are my options now: 1. Illinois Urbana-Champaign - there is great young mathematician with whom I can work there. However, I'll need 4-5 years until graduation and probably I won't like the city. Additionally, the financial offer is not very good. 2. Warwick - there is another great young mathematician there with whom I can work, but my field of study will be different from the one I studied during my MSc. I'll need only 3 years until graduation and it's closer to my home county. 3. Stay one more year in my home country and apply again next year - I'll have a chance to look for sponsors/scholarships for Oxford and wait for the response from Cambridge. If I don't succeed, I'll try to do some research and apply again next year for some other great universities + Oxford, Stanford and Michigan again - they all are very close to my interests (one of my professors forgot to send my LoR to Michigan, although I'm not sure that this was a reason for the rejection). However, it's very difficult to do research and study in my country (there aren't much resources here, I have to work in order to get money, etc.) and I feel that I'm wasting all my potential here. Also, I'll have to decline some great offers without any guarantee that the next year I'll have any better options. It's really very tough to make the decision... Can you give me some advices, please? I have only few days left until the deadlines, so I must choose fast. Thank you in advance!
  4. Thank you for your answers, guys! The problem is that I'm an EU citizen and didn't receive any funding from the department - not even an EPSRC tuituion fee waiver. When I applied for Oxford I didn't choose a college preference and didn't receive any news from the colleges. I know that there are some scholarships (such as Weidenfeld), but I'll know the results in May. The graduate studies assistant told me that Oxford can wait for my decision until then, but I have some other offers and can't wait for so long, because they will expire. Greetings!
  5. Today I received an e-mail from Oxford, that department X is willing to offer me a place, but the admissions and funding committee are unable to offer me funding, so I have either to withdraw my application or ask to be considered for an unfunded place. I talked with a student from UK and he explained me that if I haven't received at least EPSRC tuition waiver (which is not mentioned in the e-mail), this is practically not an offer. Oxford is my top choice and I'd be happy to do research there. But on the other hand, probably it wouldn't be so great to try to find scholarships/loans/sponsors in order to get into a school, where I won't be treated as a regular student. Is there someone, who can give me an advice? I'm not acquainted with the admission processes in UK and don't know what should I do now. Thank you in advance!
  6. 10 days ago I sent e-mails to the schools I appliy for: Hello! I'm an applicant for ***'s PhD program in ***, but I haven't received an answer yet. Am I still being considered for admission? When can I expect to hear back?Thank you in advance! Sincerely yours, *** I didn't receive any answers to my inquiries. Most people told me that such e-mails don't harm the chances for acceptance and in the worst scenario the admins will just ignore you. The idea was to receive my rejection letter sooner, if the decision has been already made. However, now I'm even more worried... Can somebody comment the situation objectively, please? I can manage with bad news, but the state of not knowing anything is much worse... Greetings!
  7. I sent few status inquiries one week ago, but didn't receive any answers:( I started some of the e-mails with "Hello!" (because I couldn't find the name of the secretary/professor) and probably now my applications are in the piles, called "Bores, who will be rejected on 15.04". However, there is only one week left until mid-March, so in all cases we'll have plenty of information until then...
  8. Thank you guys, I already received an answer from the department. It seems that the chances are not as bad as I thought, but now I'll have to keep my fingers crossed until April. Best of luck for you too
  9. 10 days ago I got waitlisted by one of my top choices. I was very curious what are my chances for acceptance, but decided not to bother the department. However, I saw some suggestions here that it is actually better to get in touch with the university in such case. What should I write exactly? Is it too late to do it? I don't want to sound like a whiner, but want to show that I'm interested. I saw some statistics for undergraduates and found out that the chances to get off a waitlist there are very slim (<10%), but is this the case with the graduates too? Also, I haven't heared any news from 5 universities, which have already sent a bunch of responses to other applicants. I've read some controversial opinions on this issue - some people say that I should just wait for the rejection letter, others say that "no answer" means "waitlisted" or that some applications haven't been evaluated yet. So is it acceptable to ask why my decisions are delayed so much? I started again gnawing my nails and eating a lot of sh*t foods and really need to get some answers soon. One potential problem is that the universities are considered to be TOPs and I guess that if I become impertinent, I may blow up all my chances left. Thank you in advance!
  10. 1.Well, probably I can't stop doing it anyway. 2.I don't know of any way to determine my number on the list... But I don't think that there's big chance that many people will reject their offers. 3.OK, I'll dream until I still have that chance:)
  11. 1.Should I refresh non-stop my e-mail during the weekend? 2.Should I dream about a university where I am wait-listed? 3.Should I dream about a university which has already sent mass acceptance/rejection e-mails? The waiting is killing me Good luck everyone!
