  1. Hi Leo Han. I can't help you decide between departments, but I do advise that you wait to hear back from more schools before committing to anything- especially if there's going to be such huge variation in available funding. Personally, I would be very hesitant to sign up for a program that I'd have to pay for... but even if funding is not an issue, wouldn't you like to know all of your options before you say yes to anyone? I know waiting on schools to make their admissions decisions is rough, but try to hang in there. Good luck!
  2. Congrats on getting to choose between Harvard and Stanford! Perhaps the best way to get the answers you're looking for is to contact current Physics grad students at both institutions. If you have the opportunity to visit the schools, that would be a great way to gauge the quality of life. Otherwise, see if the professors that admitted you can give you student e-mails. Be sure to talk to a few different people as one student's grad school paradise may be another's nightmare.
  3. I have no idea how Harvard houses grad students with partners (LGBTQ or otherwise), but I don't think you'll lose much by living off campus. Many departments have their own social events (happy hours and such) and you can still participate in Dudley House activities without living on campus. You might even prefer living away from campus and not worrying about weekend party noise from the undergrads. As far as where to live in Cambridge, I recommend places around Central Square (about a 10 min walk from campus). Inman Square and Porter Square are also nearby (but I don't know what the prices are like). It's cheaper than Harvard Square and far less touristy (and full of great restaurants and cafes). You can also try looking on Craigslist to see what kind of stuff is available and what it's going for. Keep in mind that there are A LOT of students seeking housing in Boston/Cambridge that will be wanting to move in at the end of summer, so it's probably better to get your housing worked out early. Congrats on getting into Harvard! I hope I've been helpful.
  4. Given that I know no other information about the programs you are interested in, all I can say is that Boston, Ma is a lot more exciting than Princeton, NJ. Thus, I vote Harvard!
  5. Congrats on getting into Department A! My advice is to wait for Department B to contact you. It doesn't make things go any faster if the ad comm has to respond to people calling wanting things to go faster... Good luck, though!
  6. We all need some calming down from time to time.
  7. My advice is don't fret! When I look at the history of acceptances on the results board, I see that a lot of departments do not accept everybody on the same day and then stop looking. Sometimes people get accepted several weeks apart. Just because one person has been accepted and you haven't heard anything does not mean you've already been rejected. Good luck!
  8. Well I called today and it turns out not every department sends e-mails. Everything is fine! Now I just have to worry about getting in...
  9. Jcandy- did you contact your department directly or just call the admissions office? I went ahead and sent an e-mail to the generic GSAS admission e-mail address, but now I'm wishing I'd just gotten in touch directly so I'd know what was going on by now. Thanks for the advice everyone!
  10. Hi Folks, For anyone familiar with Columbia's application process- I checked my application status online. Although it says all my stuff has been received, the status is "incomplete." Does this mean I messed up somewhere or just that no decision has been made on me yet? Also, the "at department" space is blank- does this mean my file hasn't even reached the relevant admissions committee? I've seen at least one person post an acceptance to this department on the results board and I'm starting to worry that my application is going to get lost in the ether... I don't want to be "that student" that annoys the admissions committee- so I thought I'd check with you all before I contact anyone at Columbia. Am I being paranoid? Thanks for your help!
