    SSRC 2014

Hi! Can I talk about my application for the SSRC-JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) fellowship for ABDs here? If so, I received an e-mail today stating that I have been selected as an alternate and that "should it become possible to nominate your project for consideration by JSPS, you will be notified as soon as possible." I can't imagine anyone turning this one down given that it's super competitive and awards substantial funds for research in Japan, but maybe, if I'm lucky, some of those who were recommended for this one will also be offered a Fulbright (for which I was rejected) or something and take that instead. Either way, I'm kind of giddy about receiving something other than an outright rejection!
  2. The National Screening Committee of the Institute of International Education has completed its work and has recommended candidates for the 2014-15 academic year. I regret to inform you that your application is not among those recommended for further consideration. Unfortunately, it is not possible to accommodate all students who would like to participate in the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. I want to assure you that the application review is very thorough and that screening committees carefully weigh individual qualifications for research, study or teaching abroad. It is not our policy to discuss the reasons for this outcome. As is often the case in the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, the number of well-qualified applicants this year exceeded the number of awards available and the limited opportunities for placement abroad. Over 10,000 applicants competed for about 1,900 grants. Etc.
  3. Congrats, Beingbecoming! Mine was rejected, but press on, eh?
  4. Fortunately I'm at home this afternoon, working on the dissertation and halfway into my first beer. I figure I'll either be too mopey or too relieved to keep working once the e-mail arrives, so I'll wait until I hit a good stopping point to open it.
  5. Schafly--nice! Can I come over? I think Yeti is on the menu tonight. We have some nice stuff cellaring that I might break into if the news is good!
  6. For real. I've requested some breed of strong stout of his choosing!
  7. My husband just left for the grocery store and on his way out said, "You're gonna want some strong beer this afternoon either way, right?" Yes, yes I will.
  8. Congrats, austin05! Was the e-mail from Fulbright or your FPA?
  9. Ahhh, Fulbright Scholar makes sense.
  10. Hmmm... I applied to do dissertation research but haven't heard any news. That said, your comment prompted me to check out other countries' information pages--I didn't realize that the breakdown of available grants differs so much among nations! Japan (the country to which I'm applying) has spots for 12 for graduate researchers, 10 for graduating seniors, and none for ETAs. Brazil has three categories, though none of them appear to be for a 5-month period, which is what the FB poster linked above has applied for?
  11. Hi, afminsky! I've applied for two dissertation fellowships, one sponsored by the Japan Foundation and the other by the Social Science Research Council/ Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (which is sort of a misleading title since they also support research in the humanities--I'm a Japanese literature student myself). I also applied for a Fulbright-Hays fellowship but was rejected.
  12. The Men Who Left Their Kids For The Strip Club really does happen waaaaaay too frequently in Florida! I grew up in Pensacola, where all of the parents who didn't want to leave their kids alone just called up a Violent Naked Pooping Masturbator to babysit.
  13. I spent the first 26 years of my life in Florida, and I'm laughing so hard at this headline: "Record meat crime in Fort Pierce? Or just another high stakes caper?" I miss that crazy-ass state.
  14. I don't have to be on campus on Fridays, and while I certainly can't say I have nothing better to do, if I'm going to be on my computer anyway I might as well check in here, you know, constantly. (Also: Sorry if my post re: the futility of calling the other day sounded crabby-- that wasn't my intention. I went through this process a few years back, sans gradcafe support, and no one I called would tell me anything!)
  15. Hehe. I love the guy to death, but we share a 500 square foot apartment. 'Nuff said. Also, my FPA just wrote, "It should be any day now-- Fingers Crossed for Good News." Just like that, with the second half in title caps. Ha!
