If it's any help to know this, my most recent letter from them said something like "in the interest of our waitlisted students, please let us know of your decision by April 15 at the latest, and let us know sooner if you have made your decision." I imagine a lot of us will be much closer to making our decisions after the recruitment visit this coming week! Good luck to you guys.
Thanks. It's Minnesota or bust at this point.

Any new news on the waitlist process?
-
Is anyone aware of Maryland's history of accepting PhDs. to the MA program? I checked the results board and didn't see any soft of confirming info one way or the other.
-
I asked, and a quick review of the timeline for past years makes it obvious as well.
Ok. I looked over the timeline, but saw that things were moving a little quicker this year across the board.

It'll be another two-ish weeks for Iowa at least, so don't be too anxious.
Where did you hear that?

I just posted what I think to be the second wait list announcement. Here's the bulk of the e-mail/letter: "This year, our program had an extremely competitive applicant pool with over 130 applications for only 7 funded positions. Since we only admit full scholarship students we cannot, at this time, offer you admission to the program. However, our Graduate Program Committee was very impressed with your candidacy and has placed you on a wait list for admission."
Beyond this, it just said they'll keep me informed about the status of my application.
Sorry, I wish I could offer me helpful information.
No, that works. I'm wondering if they've accepted people already, but none of those 7 happen to be on GradCafe. They have tended to inform acceptances over the phone, so I guess keep 'em ready.

Ok, who's gonna claim it. And any details you have on how far they are in the process would be helpful.

I have no info, but I can say that Madelon Sprengnether the DGS has been really prompt at getting back to me. Have you emailed her? Her assistant Karen Frederickson has also been really helpful as I've been arranging stuff for the visit weekend. If you haven't been emailing them and want their emails, PM me (or I'm sure you can find them on the website too). Good luck!
Nevermind, we have heard. It's a waitlist by subfield. Thanks for the help.

Thanks, I will do so if I need it. I wish I could be more gracious right now, but sports have sent me into a rage right now.

Has anyone heard from Minnesota regarding the waitlist process and how many people are on it? We've called and emailed, and heard nothing.
-
I just got waitlisted. Apparently the list is pretty short -- 11 people -- and they've accepted 28 people for 15 spots.
Also, (and I know this is tacky but...) can anyone who got accepted tell me what the funding package looks like?
tuition + health + 21k for fellowships, 23k for teaching. You get at least one year of fellowships, and possibly a second year.

Ugh, I looked at last year's Minnesota thread and they had the same discussion- and graduate School Review turned into a rejection letter for at least one poster. So it could still go either way, I think.
My girlfriend is on the waitlist, and her's doesn't say that. It stills says the same application complete message as before.
I would assume that if you are on final review, you are probably getting cut. Best of luck to everyone who is still up in the air like we are.

The title of this thread--"Giving Up"--is disingenuous. It's purpose is not, in fact, to discuss seriously the abandonment of one's ambitions. It is, rather, a plea for encouragement. I say this, now, three rejections deep. What's insidious and corrosive about the Grad Cafe is, it lends hope to those who ought to be hopeless. Be pragmatic. That you'll land, even with a degree from the best of programs, a TT job is, well, unlikely. That you'll be tenured is unlikelier still. If we haven't got the juice to make it the first round or the second (I for one will not do this a second time) odds are we're simply not talented enough. Pitty--self-pity especially--is ridiculous and deleterious. Go to law school. Prosper.
I disagree on what Grad Cafe does. Instead of giving people hope, it creates despair by knowing exactly when everyone hears from every school, leaving you wondering when you're going to hear, if ever, and turning functional people into nervous wrecks.
Just because something is unlikely doesn't make it worth pursuing. There is a certain amount of money you need to live on: the rest is just for your own fun. But if your job makes you happy and you like what you do, you obviously need less of the latter.
And finally, the issue isn't a lack of talent, but an overabundance of it. Eventually, those who don't really want to be in this field will move on, but those who really do will stick around waiting for their shot. Don't give up yet, you have a long road in front of you and plenty of time to get to your goals.

FWIW, my current (American) institution is doing business as scheduled on Monday. Dunno about Rutgers. I feel like President's Day is one of those holidays only the USPS, banks and government employees really take off...
So is mine, and Rutgers will be open for business Monday, per their academic calendar. Hopefully sooner rather than later!

COngrats to you and your girlfriend!
Thanks! We're still waiting on a few more, but she and I would love to be in the Gopher Hole. Luckily, I have a job that gives me the flexibility to move with her wherever.

My girlfriend just received her rejection letter by mail today. It was postmarked yesterday. We live in Ann Arbor, so expect more over the next couple of days.
-
My girlfriend just got waitlisted at Minny. Much better than the four rejection letters we already have in hand.
-
Give those two my best.
It's easy to forget that even to get this far, we are still better off than 98% of others in the world. We've had access to a great education, and have the opportunity to pursue academics as a career. It may not work out this time, but we should still feel proud of what we've done so far.
