  1. I applied to the MA program in Art History. Got acceptance on Feb. 7 and funding letter about a week ago.
  2. I feel dumb, but I want to make sure I know how much I'm being offered. The letter says: "In addition to the funding above [small fellowship] we can guarantee you two quarters of support in your first year in the form of a 25% TA, 25% Readership, or a 25% GSR. TAs receive a salary of approx. 2828 per quarter and Readerships receive a salary of approx. 1297 per quarter, as well as a partial fee remission for each quarter you hold one of these positions. You will be responsible for approx. 275 each quarter for fees not covered by a TA/Reader appointment. The GSR pays 2026 per quarter. This appointment pays all fees, but not non-resident tuition." It's a UC school and I will be paying non-resident tuition. I'm new to this, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
  3. So a couple months ago before I submitted my application to this school I got an email from someone in the department asking if I wanted to change my educational objective to a PhD because "you can get your MA along the way and would not have to re-apply." I said no, and didn't think much about it. Well, now I got a rejection letter/email specifically stating "Thank you for applying to the [school] Doctor of Philosophy Program..." Also, the website where I check my application status says "Doctor of Philosophy" under educational objective. Is it possible that they messed up?
  4. I got the same email telling me to check on the 17th and I got in, so it's definitely not a bad sign. Like others have said, I think that's just how the embark system works. Best of luck!
  5. Started out as Engineering Undecided, switched to Electrical Engineering after a semester and graduated with that degree. Now I'm going to grad school for Art History.
  6. Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil. First Nietzsche book I've read and loved it so far.
  7. I graduated in 09 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and took a total of 3 AH courses during my undergrad. Applied last year to PhD programs in Art History and got rejected by all. This year applied to MA programs and so far got one acceptance and no rejections. I still have a hard time believing that any reputable program would accept a student with an engineering background--I was ready to take some more AH courses and apply again next year--but apparently it's doable. I did do a bunch of extracurricular work in art/art history and I think that helped. The SOP and sample must have helped too as my GPA was far from stellar--but then again, 90% of my classes were either math, physics, engineering or computer science. I can expand if anyone is interested.
  8. Was going to post here, but turned out to be too long. PMed you instead. Best of luck.
