  1. I'm starting to look for housing in Chapel Hill but can't find anything I like on craiglist. Does anyone know of any landlord's websites for student/grad student housing? Any advice for finding something nice/near campus?

I'm from the upper peninsula and I thought the winters in ann arbor were awful. It's not so much that they're cold (which they are - especially when you're walking everywhere) but they're SO gray. Something about being between the two lakes and lots of cloud cover, I swear we get 1 sunny day per week. You get used to it but it's nice to know ahead of time so you can start saving up for a much-needed winter vacation.
  3. What's parking like in Chapel Hill/on campus?
  4. Theory. It was a personal e-mail (i.e. non-form) from a professor in the sub-field.
  5. Has anyone gotten rejected from UNC yet? I feel like not hearing by now = rejection.
  6. It looks like Michigan's finally getting their official rejections out on the website. That took far too long.
  7. Definitley, then again being a waitlister I am a huge proponent of people telling schools their decisions as soon as they make them. But I would just e-mail and say thank you for the consideration but I will be accepting an offer at another school. I feel like the polite thing to do during decision time is send them out as soon as you know- it's dragging on enough on its own

One of my professors goes cross-country skiing on the weekends, I've never been but I'd guess that means snow shoeing is a go as well.
  9. I got the waitlist e-mail from Minnesota and they want me to visit and said they'd pay for travel. They also said I'm one of the top five on the list. They seem interested and yet, I'm on the waitlist. Does anyone have more info on how Minnesota is using it's waitlist? Is it one out one in? They're such a good fit for me this wait is really stressing me out.
  10. I think most people know this but Michigan has sent out all acceptances/waitlist notices. If anyone wants a definite rejection soon call or e-mail the department.
  11. E-mail response from Chicago today saying "Thank you for your e-mail. The Admissions Office has a letter in the mail to you today." Probably the vaguest rejection I've seen thus far.
  12. I think a lot of programs are doing that this year to make sure the small number they do admit are balanced between the subfields. I know Michigan is doing the same (but with only one waitlist) and I've heard Minnesota is as well.
  13. Dear Amanda - What I can tell you is that the first round of offers have been sent to applicants. Technically these applicants have until April 15 to tell us their decision, but we're hoping for answers before that. Depending on how many people accept the offers, there may be a second round of offers going out as soon as this week. Some decisions have started to be entered into the online application system, but due to the high number of applicants this will take a few weeks to complete. There is a 48-hour lag between data entry and when decisions are viewable. I hope this answers your questions at least partially. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Sincerely, Carolyn ----- Carolyn Riehl-Mitchell Graduate Program Assistant Department of Political Science Northwestern University Scott Hall, 601 University Place
  14. I second this - all of my professors have told me that you should pretty much never pay for a phd in political science unless of course you're independently wealthy and have nothing better to do with your money, like hiding it in your mattress.
