1. Well, I think you would have chosen your school by the time I post this reply but UCSD is much better than Columbia in Machine Learning. UCSD has recently hired a lot of faculty in Machine Learning. If you go through the Machine Learning Journal Committee - there are around 7 people in UCSD from Machine Learning. Further, in terms of publications (quality and number) UCSD is much better.
2. Dear All: I am an international student and have been admitted to a few universities for unfunded Masters. I have already accepted the offer from the university I wish to attend. I am a little hesitant in sending regret letters to the other universities - something in me says what if something goes wrong ( I don't know what might go wrong ), I'll have nothing to fall back upon. I have read in some other places that some students accept multiple offers and that is fine as long as they are all unfunded. I do not want to do so as I do not wish to spoil somebody's chances in getting into some other universities. Do the universities take this factor into account that some students although having accepted an offer will not join the universities, and therefore, make more offers than the number of seats available. I do not wish to do anything immoral but I am a little afraid of removing plan B,C,D from my possible options in the future.
3. First place at ACM ICPC is something that even the best Computer Science majors will find extremely hard to secure. No wonder UCB was more than willing to accept him.
4. I am also joining the CS dept at UT Austin .
5. Thanks Amogh. The fact that they specified 1 to 1.5 years scared me a little because I find hard to believe that an average student can do significant research as well as course work in that time. But you are very right, there is freedom to stay on if you like. Are you studying or did you study at UT Austin?
6. anyone from UT Austin or who did his Master's thesis in 1.5 years can shed some light?
7. Hi, I have been accepted to UT Austin for MS CS. I plan to pursue PhD later. In the acceptance letter from the department, they state that students normally take from one year to one and half years to complete their Masters. 1.5 years seems too short a time to do any significant research. It'll be nice if any senior could shed light on the thesis route from UT Austin.
8. That makes two of us. I am more interested in Computational Learning Theory specifically Deep Learning though.
9. Hi Bouncmpe

Which school did you choose finally USC or Brown? Are you happy with the decision?

10. @ mcorner Will the wait listed students be informed that they have been wait listed? Or they will not receive any email/status updates for sometime?
11. What happens if you have been accepted into a decent program but are waiting to hear from a stronger school? When are the wait listed students normally informed that they have been accepted? After April 15? In that case (after April 15) students will be in a bit of a pickle because the only logical choice is to accept the decent offer by April 15. But then when they do get the offer from the stronger school after April 15, they'll try to accept that too. Is this quite common accepting another school and rejecting a school that you have already accepted. I understand for funded programs you need to get a release from the school you previously accepted. But when you are not funded by either school? What are your options? When are the students told that they have been wait listed? Are they informed at all they have been wait listed or the schools simply send only accept/reject?
12. @mcorner

Thanks for your time professor. It helps the people who have been rejected by UMass to make up their minds to go to a lesser ranked university or in my case a university with not as strong a profile as UMass in AI.
13. If I wanted to go into industry after my Masters, I would go for CMU as it has a great reputation which implies you have a great chance of landing a good job.
14. I would go for a general CS degree unless I have talked to some seniors from Penn under the Gaming program and they have assured me that the chances of getting a good job after graduating from UPenn.
15. I also have been admitted to a small CS dept in an Ivy League university. What is the advantage of attending an ivy league school as compared to equally ranked schools in computer science?
16. I have been admitted to ScM Computer Science at Brown recently. I am a bit confused because I have no way of understanding how good Brown is simply from the ranking. 1) I am mainly interested in Machine Learning and AI. How good is Brown in those areas? 2) I would like to pursue a PhD later on but am not sure at this point. What are the chances of pursuing a PhD in Machine Learning after Masters? 3) What are the chances of getting a job after graduation? Could you also hint what kinds of jobs people get? 4) This question is mainly out of curiosity. Is there any advantage of attending Brown because it is an Ivy League as opposed to say other equally ranked computer science programs? Looking forward to your reply. Cheers, Rahul
