  1. Waitlist question ... I am waitlisted at Northwestern, which is my top choice. In my contact with the department, I have not gotten a substantial amount of information on what the waitlist is like ... i.e. how big it is, how likely I am to be admitted, and where I am on the waitlist. Does anyone who got accepted to/visited Northwestern (or anyone with knowledge on this...) have any idea of this? Not that it would make any difference in the end; I will either be accepted or not, of course. But I haven't seen any other waitlists on here, so I'm crossing my fingers that that is somehow an indicator that the waitlist is small  Not that I expect everyone to be aware of/active on GC. Also, I am not entirely sure how much contact I should have with the department ... should I be "courting" them in any way? I don't want to be annoying either. :? I would appreciate any suggestions on all this! Thank you!!
  2. Oh and thank you for your advice!
  3. Yeah I actually just did that (contacted the programs) :-) Got an email from NYU saying I'm out. Oh well. Although, there is nothing on my Columbia login about a decision.
  4. Got rejected from UMass - for those of you still waiting, I logged onto the website and it just said "denied." Bummer. At this point all I know is that I have been waitlisted at Northwestern, and rejected at Yale... but for all other programs I applied to (cf my signature) I have heard 100% nothing. I am assuming for some of them rejections; MIT, NYU, UMD ... but the uncertainty really sucks. Should I still be expecting good news from anyone? Should I be expecting to be accepted off the waitlist at Northwestern? This really sucks, and I'v sort of written off a PhD ... for this year, that is. And I don't know if that's realistic or just pessimistic. Anyway, for those of you who have acceptances, congratulations! I'm sure you'll make fantastic linguists :-) And thanks for listening to my temporary whining ;-)
  5. To lindyc I am having similar results. I am in Europe, and of the 11 schools I applied to, I have only heard from 3. It is driving me craaaazy, but it might have something to do with the fact that I live here ... Hope this helps
  6. Yeah, that's true. I had initially planned to apply to UPenn, but their response to my inquiry about my GRE was pretty negative, so I decided not to. But all the other schools I contacted were quite positive about it. In fact, none of the schools I applied to had a minimum ... I don't know which schools do, actually. I am not too concerned about it ... I don't think that it will have much bearing on my application. If I ever make it to professor, I will totally rage on the GRE. It is a distracting, money grubbing practice that should be scrapped. (At least general standardized tests for social sciences, humanities)..
  7. I just want to say.. to those of you who are worried about your GRE scores - don't worry! I have a serious problem with standardized tests - ever since high school, and I'v had more-or-less straight A's through college. And I started college after my sophomore year in high school (graduated with a high school diploma and Associates Degree .. with a college GPA of 3.9) .. and even then, I had abysmal SAT scores. So, to no surprise, my GRE scores were abysmal... 900 ... combined... no joke. But I am finishing up a successful Master's in Logic. I of course contacted the schools I applied to about this, and they said that they weren't overly concerned with GRE scores, and that I shouldn't be concerned about it. But maybe it even helped that my scores were abysmal instead of average. Also when I was applying to Master's I got accepted to every program ... with terrible GREs. Right now I'v only heard from Northwestern (waitlisted) and Yale (rejected, but I know that it's not because of my GRE) So I wouldnt worry too much about it guys! I think people have started to realize how worthless standardized test scores are. Of course, if you do well, that's great! I just won't ever waste my time, money and energy on that crap again.
  8. Using "so" probably has some root in German. In Dutch, at least, you can say "Ze is zo groot als haar moeder" = She is as tall as her mother. Or "Ze is niet zo groot als haar moeder" = She is not as tall as her mother. P.S. I have a t-shirt that says "Frege is my homeboy"
  9. Thanks for the "condolences" everyone :-) I actually got a very nice email from Larry Horn a few days ago saying that although the semanticists and philosophers (of logic, language) would have liked to have me, their colleagues were looking for people with a stronger background in other linguistics topics. That's what I thought. So it was a little comforting :-) I'm still going crazy expecting something from UMass. I keep on having dreams about being accepted and then I wake up ... and realize its not a dream. Then the next night I have another dream about being accepted to a different school, and I remember thinking in the dream "oh boy, I'm glad this isn't a dream like yesterday." So frustrating when I wake up and realize that it is a dream too! Haha ... I hope I'm not the only person losing my mind... Anyway, I hope the knowhow I have of Yale now is of interest to the other applicants with a broader background! goodluck :-)
  10. So Yale has started sending out results. I got rejected :-( I had gone there a little while back and I met Lawrence Horn, Ashwini Deo, and Zoltan Szabo. Dr. Horn was concerned about my exceptionally strong background in semantics and pragmatics but nearly nonexistent background in other linguistic topics (phonetics, psycholing, historical ling, etc.) ... and said that it was a gamble for me to go into an eclectic linguistics department (since I might not like some topics). So I am guessing that that is why I was rejected. Although Zoltan Szabo from the philosophy department and I had a fantastic conversation, and he seemed to really want a student to help teach logic classes. I guess my application to schools that have a stronger concentration is semantics could work out better. I really really really hope that people decline Northwestern so that I can go there  It's one of my top choices and I love cold weather! Oh well, I'm disappointed about Yale, but no point dwelling on it. I'm not sure if they have sent out acceptances yet, but at least they've started sending out a few results. Also, the letter said that they got 9500 applications .. that sounds a little excessive to me ... ?
  11. Hey fuzzylogician. Congrats on all your acceptances! So I guess youre a logician  Where do you study? I'm getting my master's in logic at the University of Amsterdam ...and also interested in formal semantics and pragmatics. Now I'm so nervous about hearing from Umass since people have started hearing! The website still says pending.... :!:
  12. Hi there. Nice that they finally have a linguistics subforum! I have applied to: MIT Linguistics/Philosophy NYU Philosophy Yale Linguistics UMass Linguistics CUNY Philosophy Rutgers Linguistics Columbia Philosophy Northwestern Linguistics Boston University Philosophy U Maryland - College Park Linguistics SUNY Buffalo Linguistics So far I have only heard from Northwestern; waitlisted. I'm so nervous! I don't know if that's good or bad :-) So what is everyone into? I guess Phonologist is interested in ... phonology? I study logic and semantics, which is partly why I am applying to some philosophy programs. Many semanticists are philosophers.
