I actually was having similar questions about Candler. My mentor went there for his PhD, and so I asked him a laundry list of questions.
He finished up there six years ago, so a bit may have changed.
According to him: it is a rather nice, middle to upper class burb. Grounds are well kept.
Fairly trendy. I guess that the Indigo Girls live there and got their start in that neighborhood.
He said that Emory parking can be tricky. They evidently have a number of parking lots that require permits and then have shuttles that take you to campus from there.
Cost of living is rather high for the region, but obviously less than other areas of the country.
Safety of the area he was was pretty decent as far as he remembered. The school that I go to now is in the middle of a more financial/crime hurting community, and so he pointed out that the community for the most part embraces the university; there isn't a stark contrast of money at the university and money in the neighborhood.
