  1. You're all right, of course. I feel a bit silly for posting in the first place but thank you for humoring me. I think it's just pre-grad school jitters; I'm going to miss thinking that I know what I'm talking about. :/ Best of luck to all! NF
  2. Hello all, I'm looking for a bit of advice, of course. I applied to and received offers from 6/8 schools, am currently trying to decide between a Comp Lit PHd at Brown and a (fully funded) "Area Studies" masters at Cornell. Am I crazy to seriously consider turning down a PhD program for a masters program? The thing is, I seriously feel drained after 4 years of undergrad and while I don't want to take time off-- I really would like some time to solidify my interests. I've spoken to several profs at the area studies masters, one of which ( my potential adviser) warned me that getting into graduate school is going to be even tougher in the coming years. He seemed to be hinting that I should take the PHd offer...but I'm starting to have doubts about a) my fit in the program the potential of jobs after graduation in comp lit or a national literature program...etc,etc, etc. The only reason I'd take the Phd offer is because I'm quite worried about my grades this semester and I don't want to go through the whole application process again. Really, I nearly died of angst this Jan/Feb, lol. Any thoughts? Best, NF
  3. Your reaction made me chuckle a bit, GG. I guess I posted the listing because I hoped that the writer was active on this forum and had written it ironically/satirically. (Mentioning West and Cornell marks a certain familiarity with either Princeton or the AfAm field.) It is interesting; I think I received very similar reactions, though scantily veiled, when I mentioned that I'd applied to a few AfAm doctoral programs. Q: What would you DO with that degree?' A: ...about the same thing that I'd do with an English degree...or any other degree in the humanities. Oh, GG--I'm terrible at responding to messages on the board. I am ecstatic about my trip to Providence next week; I actually have a meeting with Dr. Bougues-- and I'm just hoping that I won't make a terrible ass of myself in his presence...lol. I'd love to hear more about your work and what you've been doing since your undergraduate degree at Brown (unless I'm completely wrong and you are still an undergraduate student ?) Oh, and of course I have a boatload of questions about housing in Providence. Any recommendations? (Especially for 1/1s...lol.)
  4. Did anyone else happen to catch this: "Princeton African American Studies, PhD Accepted via Other on 4 Mar 2009 O 3 Mar 2009 10 k to fit me with grillz. 2k for grape soda. Annnnd I get to be Cornel West's rent boy." Really?
  5. Hi GoodGuy, Congrats on all of your admits! I'm considering Comparative Literature at Brown with the intention of working closely with the Africana Studies department (which is absolutely fantastic). Are you going to the recruitment weekend? Best, NF
  6. Re: Cornell Africana I received a call from Carol Boyce Davies last Thursday or so. She made me (almost) regret choosing Brown over Cornell Africana. Best of luck, NF
  7. I was admitted to Dartmouth today as well. My Blackberry went off in the middle of a French linguistics class; I went to silence it, saw the e-mail, and yelped like an idiot. Congrats! Was Dartmouth your first choice?
  8. Congrats on UCSD! I didn't apply-- but I just realized that you aren't who I assumed you to be. ( Consult the private message I just sent you, lol) Best, NF
  9. You're probably right. Oddly enough, when I asked Kathleen Cloutier, she paused before she responded. I remember thinking, for a split second, that she was holding back, lol. Well, the initial shock has worn off quite a bit. Best of luck d1k (and to all). NF
  10. Thanks kfed I'm curious to see what this class looks like. I gather that you applied (to the department) under the English disciplinary track? What are your interests, if you don't mind my asking? NF
  11. I'm happy this thread is finally getting some traction. Harvard made its calls 2 days ago? Are you sure? I called and the office assistant told me that they hadn't started notifying yet. (That could very well be a ruse to avoid the disappointed questions, though.) This is absolutely crushing...but I guess I can stop waiting around with bated breath. I'm glad that I applied to so many masters programs ; I'm really banking on Cornell now! Anyone else besides Othello's alter applying? Congrats to all the Berkeley and Northwestern admits! (I'd love it if you all could post your stats/interests/etc.,) Oh, and to whomever asked-- Yale does have the final list of admits. Bon courage, NF
  12. Is anyone else waiting for a response from Yale/Harv or Cornell?
