  1. Hi guys! Dunno if you remember me, but after getting the rejection from Fulbright, I decided to apply for EPIK and just got placed in Seoul! I'd love to travel though to the other cities so it would be nice to connect with awesome interesting people!

That's FANTASTIC Myacu and Congrats on your acceptance to EPIK :)

Add yourself to the Fulbright group and you can add me to :)

  2. Does any one here have experience applying for Fulbright, especially as a student in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)?

How does this application compare and differ to writing an NSF GRFP or NDSEG proposal?

I am planning on applying to Fulbright as a Mechanical Engineer for China two years from now, so I am beginning my preparation.

I am a STEM major but I applied to an ETA Program

  3. Well, I guess you're stuck friending me too. I just got the call telling me that they received extra funding and I've been updated to receive the ETA position! I'm in such a state of shock/ panic! I had to pull out of my contract for a teaching job in China and I'll be scrambling with the medical forms, but South Korea here I come!

I am so proud of you for getting accepted as a Fulbright Scholar and yes I will see you soon :)

  4. Has everyone finally heard from Korea? I know that some people's letters seemed to arrive much later than others, but there are quite a few empty spots on the spreadsheet.

    I did and was accepted!

  5. My major was Chinese, and it would've been pretty impossible for me to become fluent unless I studied abroad, so I spent my junior year in Changchun, China. It was...different, both in good and bad ways, probably a lot like how life in Korea will be. I lived in the dorm with other international students, but I was particularly envious of was the fact that an American friend of mine lived with a host family, which is one thing I'm really pumped about for Korea. While I was over there I studied at a Chinese language center, and so I had other international students as classmates, including a lot of Japanese and Koreans. A lot of us became friends and for my winter break and before I went back to the US in the summer I visited a bunch of them in Korea, but only around the Seoul metropolitan area. I also did a language exchange where I helped teach a Korean classmate English in return for Korean lessons, so I have the basics down pretty well. Anyways, I reached my goal of being pretty fluent in Chinese, and having the basics of Korea down already and the fact that Korean shares a ton of Chinese-derived words makes me hopeful that I can learn a lot of Korean this coming year.

Wow you're fluent in Chinese?! That's a great thing and an excellent accomplishment since Chinese is one of the toughest language to master lol. You speak fluent Cantonese or Mandarin? I hope I can learn Korean and become proficient :). Are you planning on renewing your grant next year?

  6. If anyone is reading this and is going to S. Korea for Fulbright, I think we should semi-connect before meeting in South Korea. Let's make a Facebook group or just start a forum on here where we can chat and get ready for an amazing year!!!

    올해는 재미있을 까!

    brian

Yes I am going to Korea and there are 5 people I am friends with on facebook that are also going to Korea

    :)

  7. Hi, I'm actually an alternate for the Korean ETA program, and I'm just hoping that you guys could update me if you know of any other alternates or people who are considering turning down their award. I have a back-up plan, but I really had my heart set on teaching in Korea, and with so many amazing candidates applying to grad schools and other grants, it doesn't seem totally unlikely that an alternate or two will be called up to take someone else's spot. On the main Fulbright forum I'm the only listed ETA alternate for Korea, which surprised me. Congrats to all you confirmed applicants; I'm sure you'll have an incredible time.

OMG!! I hope you get the ETA grant so we can meet you in July :)

Our orientation is from July 3rd to August :) Pleas keep me posted!!

  8. could someone scan/pm me the stapled sheets of instructions for filling out the medical clearance forms (first mailing, from iie)? my physician walked away with mine and i realized that now i don't have a mailing address for my completed health form. =(

Would the letters be official if I am able to fax them :) or scan them

  9. @ Readtown

I applied to TFA and Henry Luce and was NOT accepted. If you're not over 30 years old why don't you look at the Henry Luce Scholarship (hluce.org) and see if your school is a nominating institution.

I applied to TFA, Luce, Fulbright and the Critical Language and I didn't have any back-up plans. I got rejected from TFA and Luce after I made it to the final round. But I was bless to get Fulbright and Critical Language Scholarship since both were a long shot. Now I am trying to prepare myself for a bigger scholarship now!!

Also I wanted Phi Beta Kappa sooooo bad and was not nominated nor picked. I have higher credentials then all of the girls who were chosen but they failed to pick me. Was I disappointed? Yes. I thought that I was not competitive enough and I was missing something. But guess what? I was not missing anything they are actually missing a stellar person! It's their loss and not mine :)

  10. I hadn't even realized I'd be missing the 4th of July for the second year in a row...last year I was still in China at that time.

For those who haven't mailed their medical forms yet, you might wants to hold off for now. The two grant acceptance forms need to go to the same place at the medical forms, so you could just mail them all out at once as soon as your packet comes from Korea.

Thanks JP and I didn't receive my package because I wasn't home early this morning. Why were you in China and how was it?

  11. Hmmm that will be cool to leave mid-July so I can hang out with m fam for the 4th of July. I still need to get a physical done :(.

I called Rachel since Jonathan was not in his office and she told me it's not exactly 3 weeks but around 3 weeks :)

I can't wait for my package and this feels so surreal :)

I didn't even have a back-up plan neither. I def. feel so bless

Thans for the info about orientation MY FELLOW ETAers (not a word, lol)

  12. OUR gov't! The U.S.! If Congress doesn't approve a budget to run gov't to September or another stopgap measure by Friday, then essentially all non-essential gov't employees will be furloughed. It's a good assumption that State Dept workers looking at our clearance forms are not "vital" to human health. Sigh.

What? OMG!! So people are going to lose their jobs :(. This is terrible and where does leave us?

  13. Ugh. Not again. I'll work on it. Not like I was very productive tonight anyways.

But on another topic, I'm afraid this gov't shutdown will seriously affect our applications. We need to send out medical clearance form to IIE, who will then send it to the State Department for review. Unless those employees looking at our apps are deemed "essential" then I think we will be in limbo before we receive clearance to start doing everything else. Hmm ...

Crimson which gov't are you talking about

  14. I'm in california! I go to UC Berkeley, I have literally been checking this site during class. Ok, I think for my own sanity I am going to go into hiding and you will hear from me when I find out.

Keep me posted when you found out about Korea :). Send me a PM
