  1. wow! thanks for all the really great responses on this topic. This is obviously something that many of us are dealing with. I personally didn't apply to many of the top programs simply because i don't want to make art in a big city. My work deals with natural themes and uses natural materials, so an urban metropolis would be a less desirable place for me to create. I was also looking for a small interdisciplinary program. In other words, I did a lot of self-selection. Hopefully this attitude will pay off. After much thought, I am ready to go to the program I feel most strongly about, although it will not be a conventional choice. But I am ready work my ass off... I really appreciate other people here referring to alternative definitions of success. We have to keep our personal goals in mind.
  2. Yep, that is some reality going on there. Thanks for all the info. I'm hoping mostly for artistic and personal growth during my time as an MFA student, but I can't pretend that amazing gallery representation isn't part of my dream... all of our dreams I'm sure. but I guess as far as planning for reality goes... being able to pay for school would be nice.
  3. Thanks for your input. It doesn't sound harsh... more realistic than anything.
  4. oh also, I'm from Missouri (I see you have Univ of Missouri on your accepted list.. not sure if that's a ranked program or not). I don't know if you're talking about Mizzou in Columbia MO, but Columbia is a cooler area than it appears to be. Granted, I don't know about the art department so that's probably not very helpful...
  5. this was sorta my question. Problem is I'm not sure...
  6. Hey there, I know that this has come up in different topics, but I'm having a difficult time making this decision. I was wondering how much cost was factoring into other people's decisions, especially when schools with better reputations can often be more expensive. I've been accepted into three program thus far: Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL), University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (UNC), and SUNY Buffalo. WashU has a better reputation than the other two. It's not one of the top ten, but it's pretty high up there. I got a small scholarship from WashU but still I would get out of school in heavy of debt if i went there. I probably wouldn't have to take out loans to go to Chapel Hill... I'm on the wait list for full funding at Buffalo. I really like both WashU and Chapel Hill. The question is will I be missing out on opportunities if I go to school with a lesser reputation. I'm especially interested in future teaching opportunities. I would probably be a TA at Chapel Hill... pretty sure i'm not getting a TA position at WashU, so I may get more teaching experience at Chapel Hill, which seems valuable. Is it worth it to pay for a school's name or reputation? Wondering if anyone else is dealing with this right now.
  7. Acceptance email from SUNY Buffalo. I think that school's come up on this thread before. On the waitlist for a ta position (fingers crossed fingers crossed)
  8. hey there! i haven't gotten the formal offer from unc so I guess that was a bit presumptuous. I was told they'd have the numbers in the next couple weeks. But from what i gleaned from my acceptance call, it will probably a much better offer than the other program i got accepted to, but i don't have the specifics.
  9. Hey to everyone, Congrats to all of you who have gotten in to such awesome places. This is such an up and down process. I have a question for all you folks who were accepted to Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL). Just out of curiosity, how were you accepted? I just received an email with some scholarship information that seemed to assume I had already received a notification of acceptance (this email was the first i'd head from them). Hope they are not just confused. I am very excited and being told you are receiving some money is a great way of finding out you are in a program! Even with the scholarship I'm finding Washu very expensive. UNC Chapel hill with a lot of funding or Washu with little funding..
  10. Thanks so much! If you don't mind me asking, what did you think of the department?
  11. Hey, sorry to ask for another but would you mind doing University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill?
  12. I got an acceptance call from UNC Chapel Hill- they said that they were having trouble with the acceptance letter distribution.. whatever that means!
  13. Naw, I haven't heard a word from CCNY, but i'll post if i hear anything!
