  1. It occurred to me as some of us are packing, planning, and preparing for our respective countries pretty soon, it would be nice to keep in touch or follow each others experiences.

Does anyone else have a blog? I started one recently: www.adrienneharding.com. I would also be interested in following others experiences, especially if you are in Europe.

    Best wishes to everyone!

  2. I wish everyone tremendous success with the application process!

I can't help but remember what I was doing a year ago at this pivotal point in preparing my Fulbright application. Recently, I recounted some of the most meaningful lessons I learned from months of research, drafting, language study, and correspondence on my blog: www.adrienneharding.com. I am happy to share my experience on how to get through the process like a "sane person." Thanks to everyone who stops by, feel free to drop a question, comment, or message me personally.

    Best wishes to everyone!!!

  3. I wish I had found this site a year ago when I was applying. It wasn't until after I was selected that I stumbled here. These forums are a great resource--so if you are here already, you're off to a good start!

I will be heading to Austria to begin my Fulbright with a project regarding interdisciplinary music and dance studies. It would be delighted to offer my experience if anyone had any questions about the application, process, preparation, and of course the wait, etc.

You can message me or check out the blog I started recently. www.adrienneharding.com Best wishes!! :D

  4. Alright guys, I'm telling my boss today. Fingers crossed that this goes well!!

I have a good feeling! You will feel so awesome once you have shared it with the world. I totally can relate--I'm wishing you the same positive supportive reaction I received from my employer! Take a deep breath knowing what you have in store is so awesome...and tell us the details.;)

  5. Hey all,

I am new to these forums and have a question regarding my Fulbright medical forms. First off thank you to everyone for all the advice and experiences on this board, I have only recently found these forums but they have already been extremely helpful and interesting to read.

I am in the process of having my forms filled out and tests done, and I am concerned about my mental health history. In high school I had some mental health illness, and was in the hospital a few times for 1 week each. I have since been fine, haven't been on any meds or seen a therapist of psychiatrist for two years, and have a letter from my psychiatrist that I am perfectly stable. I have lived and worked in foreign countries and been fine. I am wondering if anyone has any idea as to how this may affect my medical clearance...is this something that they are going to have a problem with, or will a note from my doctor that I have been treated and am fine be ok? Sorry if this is a stupid question, it just hit me that this may cause a problem and I am very stressed out about it. If anyone has any experience with this or knows anything about how they view past mental health problems I would really appreciate any advice or insights. Thanks!

Welcome! As far as I know, the medical clearance is based on your overall "satisfactory health" relative to the resources of the host country. Your doctor's overall assessment at the end of the form should address this or any "red flags" you are concerned about. If your not still having issues you should be fine! Best of luck!

  6. That's awesome. I can't wait for the day where I can talk about it freely! What is your project about?

I will be doing research at the Derra de Moroda archives along with some specialized coursework in the music and dance pedagogy Master's program--a highly unique interdisciplinary program. Also, taking some historical dance classes from the Baroque and 18th century dances during Mozarts life and work. I'm focusing on how social dance can offer an integral contribution to music pedagogy. Bla, Bla, Bla...lol B)

I'm happy to share...How about you? I would love to know about some of the other projects here.

  7. Most people have reacted extremely positively and are impressed to the point that I get embarrassed. However, my work doesn't know yet, so I've had to keep it a secret from my work friends, which is sooo difficult. I actually ran into someone the other day who mentioned it in front of one of my co-workers. That was really awkward, thank god that co-worker is one of my best work buddies. I think because I can't tell my work yet, it's not fully sunk in.

Has anyone bought their plane tickets yet? I'm waiting on my official grant documents to show up, as I watch the airline prices go up and up...

I kept it from my work and university, also. It was like preventative damage control. Sometimes it was unbearable....but I'm glad I kept it hush for a while and let it sink in. After I received medical clearance, I met with my supervisors and told them, then I sent a letter to my students, the FPA and referees and it went viral from there.. finally I announced it on facebook and let out a BIG pleasurable sigh : )

Bought my plane tix today ...I'm a little worried though after reading some of these posts. I hope they are legit and not some too good to be true deal.

  8. Muscndanz- are you the Fulbright PhD candidate who will be teaching in UAE?

I just found out today about my status from alternate to grantee

I believe there are a few PSU congratulatory awards in graduation and the paper I'll expect to have an article or something...

My dad is happy for me but concerned (he would be if I were going to Europe or Asia too). Mom feels the same, but won't say so for fear of hurting my feelings.

My husband is hoping for gift certificates to "Muchas Gracias" the Mexican restaurant for HIS graduation because he can't cook.

Friends & family are just finding out. I'm excited because the doctors at the ER I work in had just started warming up to me when they found out I was recommended. LOL... doctors are busy people though, particularly those working in the ER.

Hi Erica Ci--No I am a full grantee for Austria (graduate).

My family is concerned too...they are going through a mix of emotions, I can tell. In every other conversation there is some inevitable phrase: "let's change the subject" or "okay, okay, we'll deal with that later..." They think there is so much time left, yet I am utterly aware of how quickly things are moving (whether I like it or not).

The university has posted announcements and interviewed us for an article. One of my colleagues is graciously throwing a celebration party. It is awfully strange to have so much attention when I am still trying to grasp it myself. But I am taking it all in... and I am so happy to have a network of support.

  9. To fellow Fulbrighters:

What reaction are you receiving since the announcement of your Fulbright award from your institutions, communities, family, friends etc... any special recognition, fanfare, events, news articles? How are you handling the "change in status" as you prepare for the Fulbright experience abroad? Please share...

    Congratulations! :D

  10. The results stated that I had a low WBC along with low iron. The iron is explained due to issues regarding gastritis, but I thought I'd nipped it in the bud awhile ago. Guess I need to follow up on that now.

The WBC could be due to a variety of factors, with stressing out about school being at the fore. I don't think it's anything to be worried about neither.

She also said there was something weird with my liver. But that's the first I've ever heard anything about it.

This was the first time I'd ever visited this doctor, as I usually am attended to by my family physician in Mississippi. I'm as healthy as a horse...I don't remember the last time I had even a cold.

Argh! Why would these abnormalities show up now!?

Damis, I think you will be fine. If you have slight abnormalities either higher or lower it may be a concern to you (and of course you should follow up before you leave), but considering you will be going to Germany, you will not have to worry about adequate health care. Particularly if your physician gave you an overall satisfactory evaluation at the end of the form. I hope you can handle the anxious wait for clearance. Wish you the best!

  11. I guess this is a dumb question, but would they email us if something was wrong with our form? I'm just overly anxious, because the General practitioner that I saw mixed up the abnormal and normal columns and used a ton of white out...and I'm worried that they'll think that the form is inaccurate or something and revoke my grant.

If that is the case, it's hard to say...I don't think it would be as big a problem if your GP initialed or made some kind of note about the error. (When the murse misread my lab result and then crossed it out, I told her to please initial next to it.) It is also highly plausible that it won't matter at all, especially since they did not cite any special criteria about making corrections on the original form, i.e. use only blue ink, or no white out, or obvious corrections. I don't yet know how they handle denying medical clearance, but it seems more likely that they would send you a new form and ask you to fill it out again, before they would revoke your grant. If you made a copy and have all the pertinent information, then it should only be at the worst an inconvenience.

Sorting through minutae... it never ends...does it?

    Hope this helps!:)

  12. Question about the medical clearance. I emailed Rachel and asked if we would get notification of our medical clearances, and she said that we wouldn't. So does that mean we'll only know if we weren't cleared? So no news is good news? I hate not having answers.

When I inquired about my medical clearance in early March, I was told they would send grant authorization once they receive the "okay" from IIE regarding transcripts, medical clearance, etc. The fulbright website states that you should allow three weeks. It was an anxious three weeks, but I received my notice in the form of an email with grant authorization docs attached. No news is good news, since they will return your form if it is incomplete or if there is further information required which will delay your grant.

  13. That's a great idea and all, but I don't really have a back up plan, so I'll be sitting around anyway wondering what I did wrong, reapplying and waiting for another year...

Skyfire is right! Your plan now is to get a plan B!

You've made it this far, many others have not. You may be overlooking some great opportunities if you don't. Wish you the Best!

  14. Congratulations to everyone who has received awards!!

For those who did not receive an award, I hope you find that nothing was lost in this process. . .

    Those still w a i t i n g... may you have an answer soon!

    :)

Any other grantees waiting to receive US medical clearance?? I am wondering how long this process takes. I heard from Austria they will submit grant authorization documents once they have clearance.

  15. We just need to send back that medical form filled out by a physician, right? And when they say three weeks, they mean like the letter can be postmarked w/in three weeks or like they must receive it within three weeks? I just hope they can fill everything out during this silly exam. And then we can get more info ...

I think the postmark within three would be the latest I would push it without notifying them. After you mail it, it will be out of your control. It didn't take long for my doctor and I to fill out the form, but there were a couple tests and lab work I needed to complete which took another week. Ahhh... I am glad it's all in. I received notice that once Austria and IIE confer over my clearance and transcripts they will send grant authorization forms.

  16. Hi All,

I have a questions for those who have been accepted already (congrats!!): in your letter was there a certain time period which you had to accept/decline by?

I am asking because my letter will be sent to my parent's house - but they are on vacation for 10 days and their mail is on hold until they get back so I'm a little nervous about missing a possible deadline! please respond! Thanks!! :)

Yes, I had to respond within three weeks of receipt of the letter. There were medical clearance forms that need to be authorized by a physician and returned to IIE. You should contact them if you have a concern you will not meet their timeline. If they don't hear from you within three weeks they will assume you are declining and drop you from the candidate pool. Take a deep breath....Hope you hear something soon!

  17. Me too! Do you know what city you will be living in? I applied to do research in Vienna, and they said I would be teaching there as well. What's your research focus? I'm going to translate contemporary Austrian poetry.

I chose to do research in Salzburg studying the relationship of historical social dance gestures to classial music. I have sent in the medical clearance paperwork...I wonder if there are any further steps??? I have resisted the temptation to tell everyone yet until I know the clearance and documents are all approved, etc. I am bursting at the seams...but it will be worth it knowing it's official!

  18. Is anyone going to Austria? I got my acceptance email and letter two weeks ago. It's a combined research/ETA grant. They seem to pretty fast, so I'm wondering if anyone else knows if they're going.

First time on the forum....Hi moni185 Same Here! I received an email notification that I was a finalist a week sooner then I was expecting. Then I was waiting for March 1st to start the anxiety-ridden wait...Then out of the blue (about three weeks ago), I get a conspicuously thin letter size envelope from IIE. It immediately "felt like" rejection since I had no idea that something so thin could be good news. I was accepted and two days later got the letter from AAEC stating I received a combined award as well. I am delighted to see another Austria grantee!
