  1. I'm going there in the fall and from what I know they said they were unsure how many/if any assistantships they would have to offer. I'm in state tuition though, so it's not too disheartening although I'd love to have one eventually for my resume. The most helpful thing for looking at their off campus clinics is definitely that newsletter.

Congrats on your decision! Have you started buying all orange yet?

  2. Does anyone know anything about the program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center? Is the program good for a medical-focus? (I know they have a medical tract for students interested in pursuing that route instead of the school setting). Does anyone know about the clinical placements?

I don't know anything about them personally, except for what I read on the website... I still have not heard anything from them! There is a newsletter on I think the first page that states what has been happening in the program for the last 2 years and it was very informative. Along with the medical track, they are going to offer I think adult neurogenics, a Dementia specialty, and something else. My main concern is cost because I do not think anyone said they got funding and even if I did get accepted, I am out of state tuition. Oh and in the newsletter, it made it seem like all the on campus clinics were not in the same place and that they were trying to build a new speech and hearing clinic. They are in the process of raising money. Did you go to their interview? I wonder what specific internship sites they have.

  3. Congrats on making your decision! I had a tough time too after I made mine. I kept wondering if I should email them back and try to make it work. However, it all came down to money for me and I am excited /nervous to start in the fall! I think my summer will be spent reviewing just so I can make sure I'm somewhat prepared.

Well I officially declined emerson yesterday. Dang it was hard! I keep getting those "what if I made the wrong choice?" moments. But I guess at this point I just can't look back and instead just focus what's in store for me at my chosen program. In the end it just all boiled down to logistics coz even though I have no undergraduate loans I was looking at about 70-80k for two years in emerson including living expenses while bloomsburg would be around 40 including living expenses. Also, my husband works in PA and so we would have had to be apart for the time that he's still here (he's deploying soon)

There are even moments where I get paranoid like omg what if bloomsburg decides they don't want me but I already turned emerson down. Lol. I don't think it will happen coz I already paid the deposit :) it took me a while to get the courage to send that email but hopefully someone out there will gladly take my spot :)

  4. Question, when people say "funding" what exactly do they mean? I always thought of funding as grants, scholarships, TA-ships, tuition breaks--anything that's not a loan. But, I emailed a state program to ask them when funding decisions would be available, and they basically said they weren't funding people. I just find it really odd that they wouldn't even need TA's...does funding just refer to "free" money like grants? I'd really like to go there, but with absolutely no financial aid there's no way I'd be able to swing it. I don't really want to e-mail them back to clarify because I don't want to seem like a jerk.

I think of funding as GRA, TA, GA, etc positions. Where your tuition is covered and you get a stipend each month. My understanding of a grant is that you have to work for a specific place after school, in order to not have to pay it back. Have you tried emailing other departments to see if they have anything available or just sending your resume for future opportunities? I have been emailing my resume to other departments. Also, I did not attend my dream school 2 years ago because it was too expensive and I did not receive any funding! It was the right decision, but extremely tough.

  5. Is anyone else overwhelmed by the cost of tuition/housing/books/transportation etc. per year at the graduate programs? I'm referring specifically to people who will take out loans to fund the education. For those of you receiving some sort of "free" grants, good for you, but I'm not talking about you guys. Hahaha.

Oh, and if this is anyone's second master's degree, I would LOVE to hear from you on how you're dealing with this.

But back to my question, do you believe this is all worth it? It's a huge investment to my future but the cost is so high.

Honestly, It depends on how much debt, if its worth it or not... For my own personal situation, graduate school without any type of assistantship will cost about 30,000 in state... However, I am still hopeful for funding. I don't think that is too much, but I still have undergrad loan debt, so its not an ideal situation. Would I pay more than that for this degree... probably not. I mean to be real, student loan repayment sucks (having to do it now with my hubby). However, every person is different for what they think is okay in terms of amount of debt. I just keep searching for funding, hoping I will find something for at least half of my graduate school. I am definitely overwhelmed by it!

  6. In my acceptance letter, UM said they would be sending another letter in the coming weeks about funding. So I'm still waiting on that. I'm really conflicted right now!

I was accepted into another graduate program at UofM 2 years ago. Another place I was told to look for funding is on the University of Memphis Student Affairs website. There is a place for assistantships and it will let you know when something becomes available in different areas on campus. Just in case the department has limited funding. I also applied for housing graduate assistantships. Good luck... I am hoping for funding too at other schools:)

  7. For alabama, did your status change on the website?

I don't know. I am not sure how to check it.... Honestly, I probably would not be able to remember my password. But, I was supposed to let them know my decision by March 15... so maybe they will have another round coming up soon.. If you have not received a rejection letter, then I would think thats still a good sign.

  8. Hi SLP24,

I noticed that you have been accepted to Georgia State. Did you receive an email or did your status change on the GSU website? When did you find out? I haven't heard anything yet and I feel so anxious! Congratulations!

Thank you. I found out yesterday close to 5 in my email. I checked my status about 3 times during the day and nothing had changed. Then when I finally checked it last night, there was congratulations. I am also going to be sent snail mail as well. This was a long wait, so I really hope you hear something soon too and good luck!

  9. ok, thats what I thought.

How did they let you know?

Postal service. The letter was dated Feb. 21st... Also it could depend on how early you sent in your applications. Other than Tennessee, I sent mine in at the beginning of January and mid-December. Who knows how the process works.. Oh and a friend who emailed Valdosta said decisions would not be made til April. Hope this helps... Did you apply for the scholarship at FSU? I think it was the literacy grant.... I have not applied and was wondering if I should wait until I get accepted/rejected. (hopefully we both get accepted)

  11. Hey is UA, University of Alabama? May be a dumb question, but I havent heard anything from them. I havent heard anything from anyone..I am freaking out

    I

Yes it is Alabama. I applied for summer admission though, so mine may have come quicker than if you applied for Fall. Stay positive! Hopefully more schools will send info soon!

  12. Hey! I didnt apply to ga state, I prob should have. I am not sure when UF is responding. I applied to valdosta too and havent heard anything. I also applied to west ga, alabama, UF, FSU, UCF, USF.

Yea. I should have applied to USF... They seem to have a great program and Tampa would have been a cool city! Oh well. I am hoping I have a few choices and some funding opportunities... These out of state schools will get expensive without it!

  13. Has anyone heard from Georgia State University? I had an interview 2 weeks ago and am waiting on pins and needles to hear back from them. Unfortunately, my application was not very impressive. I am an out-of-field applicant with a 2.96 undergrad overall GPA (3.57 in major) and a 3.8 gpa in my postbacc classes. My GRE score is embarrassing at 950. I had a great essay and three strong recommendations (even though the application only required 2). I also have experience interning under an SLP. I am so nervous. I don't have a plan b...I'm 28 and older than most other students I saw at the interviews. This is what I want to do with my life and I'm starting to feel like I don't have a chance of getting in.

I am waiting on GSU. I did find out their spring break was last week, so that is probably delaying decisions. I had my interview 2 weeks ago too and I check their website and my email way too many times a day. Was that the only GA school you applied to? Also your are not that much older than me, so do not worry about that. I am just wondering how they are going to let us know... postal? phone calls? Good Luck!

  14. Hey! I have a 3.81 GPA and I got a 1040 on the GRE (still disappointed ab my GRE score lol). I also have research and volunteer experience. And CSDCAS did mail my application. Are you doing your interview in person or on the phone?

Thanks for posting. I do not have an interview yet, which is probably not a good sign. My csdcas app still says not mailed, so I emailed to figure it out. Congrats on the interview!

  15. I hate waiting too! I'm home for Spring Break and driving my boyfriend and family crazy with my obsessiveness over hearing something. I hope we hear soon. Good luck!

My spring break is next week and I am sure my obsessiveness is going to carry over... From Grad Cafe last year it looks like people heard from UF and Alabama this week or next, so I will be checking my mailbox everyday!

  16. Is it just me or does getting into a program seem near impossible? The stats people are putting up, that have been accepted, are so impressive. I feel like if you don't have an amazing GPA and GRE scores, you're not getting in anywhere.

I think it just depends on location and where you apply. I have had 2 interviews so far, with okay credentials. Definitely not what other people have been posting, but I also looked on EdFind to decide where to apply. Keep your hopes up!

  17. Hey Ya'll

I am graduating from UF this semester, and not seeing too many southeast graduate school information. Anyone apply to schools in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama? Thanks!

I applied in GA, Fl, Al, and TN. The only school I have heard back from is Georgia State University. I applied to UF as well. How is the program there? Do you know when they should be making decisions?
