  1. An awfully blunt attempt at promotion...
  2. I really enjoyed that article. It makes a great argument for something I think the vast majority of us agree on: methodological diversity.
  3. I agree about this not being completely Poli Sci IR. Obviously, life is "interdisciplinary" but unfortunately a lot of research approaches are not. If I had to classify your interests within political science I would say they are more comparative politics or area studies.
  4. I think, like most things, the answer lies in the middle. I don't think that anyone uses only statistics to make their claims. I also think it's very foolish to remove the option of using statistics. Statistics are useful to explain specific phenomenon, not to frame some kind of overarching theory. You're right to say that different cultures assign different values to things. That doesn't mean that there isn't a real world they are dealing with. Can you really say that a country's leadership doesn't look at options and decide which one it thinks is best? Sure, those options are shaped by beliefs and social concepts, but on the ground level of IR there are decisions being made. Politics at its core is the study of who gets what and how. You can argue that our intersubjective social ideas or that our beliefs decide what "what" is, but there is still an interaction to be made. It all comes back to where you were educated. It is interesting how people are exposed to different concepts as they expand their horizons. I am an American who is going to do an MA in Poli Sci at Toronto. My undergraduate education had a very neoliberal perspective. I'm looking forward to being exposed to new ideas and interpretations. I'm not open to being told that everything is a social construction.
  5. I've been lurking for a while so I thought I'd contribute something PROFILE: Type of Undergrad Institution: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Major(s)/Minor(s): International Studies (specialty Europe and politics), Political Science Undergrad GPA: 3.76 Type of Grad: N/A Grad GPA: GRE: 660V 710Q 5.5W Any Special Courses: N/A Letters of Recommendation: One Associate Professor, One Full Professor, Director of Local IR NGO Research Experience: N/A Teaching Experience: N/A Subfield/Research Interests: IR/International Organizations SOP: Standard Other: A semester of work at a local NGO. RESULTS: Acceptances($$ or no $$): University of Toronto MA with partial funding (small graduate award) Waitlists: N/A Rejections: Wisconsin, Michigan, WashU Going to: Toronto Differently: A lot of things. In retrospect I would have written an honors thesis. Also, I would have applied to more places with more safety schools, especially considering the economic situation. In general, I would have informed myself more about the process. Overall, though, I'm not unhappy with the result.
  6. I got into the U of T MA with a 3500 graduate award. I met with the MA supervisor last week and she told me that they have a limited number of fellowships that they give out. She emailed me personally yesterday to say I'd gotten in but I haven't gotten any official email yet. Not sure if this info helps, but I'm IR/Comparative and am an American.
