@was1984: Thank you so much! Btw, are those areas marked in yellow above the Mechanical Engineering building housing blocks or something? Also, if you do know, could you please tell me how much time it would take me (using pedestrian pathways) to go by walk/sprint from the Engineering Sciences Building (ENS) to Ernest Cockrell Jr. Hall (ECJ). Apparently there is a class that starts in ECJ at exactly the same time another ends in ENS. :| Thanks in advance TDE

Hello folks, I have been admitted as a grad student in UT Austin (Yeaah!!! Go Longhorns ). I am thinking of staying off campus preferably close the Engineering block and East Mall area. Most of my CS and EE classes take place there. Could you guys give me some tips which are the closest (or atleast on the UT Shuttle route) places which are reasonably priced and most preferably away from the party zones. (It would be awesome to have some peace and quiet during exam times.) Thanks in advance TDE
  4. @was: Actually the Prof I want to work with is in the Comp Science school. I have applied there too.Haven't heard from them yet. Anyways, the ECE department has told me that the M.S + PhD thing means that I can take up the offer to do a PhD there without any problems. I am also free to leave after a Masters so it sounds like a good deal at the moment to me. Thanks again TDE
  5. Hello, Thank you for your reply. Sorry for not responding earlier... I didn't see this forum for quite a long time..Anyways I am into evolutionary computation which I want to apply to theoretical aspects of control/algorithm design. Its quite iffy whether I will do a Phd there cause there is only one Prof who does work in evo comp that interests me.. TDE
  6. Hello all, I had got an acceptance email from the ECE department at UT Austin a few weeks back. Since, I had applied for a Masters there (Not much research going on in my field of interest), I didn't pay much attention to the bit in the email stating that 'I was admitted to pursue "graduate studies"'. Today, I got the official acceptance letter by post. I realized the damn thing actually said that they were admitting me to pursue a "Masters degree(to be followed by a PhD)". I guess I had by mistake selected the M.S. plus Ph.D option in one of the multiple applications I was supposed to submit. (One had to be submitted to the graduate school, the other to the department. The graduate school status check states that I have been admitted to the M.S. program :|). I am quite clear I don't want to do a PhD there. Can I still take up the offer, do the Masters degree and transfer? I don't really want to step on any toes there (and piss off potential recommenders). Any body ever have experience/ know someone who has done such a thing when offered an M.S. plus PhD? Do advice folks. TDE
  7. Hello all, This is my first post here. I would really appreciate some advice. I am from an undergrad in EE (india) interested in Robotics, swarm , self organizing systems. I will probably have a publication due in Fall 2009. I have applied to Vanderbilt. Got a funded offer for a Masters in Computer Science. I also have an unfunded admit from UT Austin in MS ECE. I have not heard of anyone getting into Vanderbilt from my country, however UT Austin does have quite a good reputation for both ECE and CS. Naturally I am kind of tempted towards Vanderbilt cause its is free education. Which would be a good choice considering the two factors? 1. I will be taking a few control courses and a few courses in theoretical computer science during my Masters (from both the ECE and CS departments). The folks (places like Cornell, WUSTL) I want to work with eventually during my phd require a really good math background. 2. I will probably need to get more publications. I have shortlisted a couple of folks in both places whom I find interesting (not the best thing but close enough). At the moment, I am not really sure whom I want to work with more? Its more of a where can I get a publication faster thing? Should I go with Vanderbilt C.S. and a fully funded Masters or should I look at UT Austin ECE ? Do pour in your thoughts. Thanks in advance TDE
