  1. What do you think of hybrid tablet/laptop? I have the HP TouchSmart tm2t series in mind. With the various discounts it comes down to ~$800 with pretty much all the upgrades, and seems much better value than having to buy a new laptop (need one really badly) + a tablet. It comes with a stylus too, so I imagine it is better designed for note taking than the ipad. Is it too good to be true?
  2. Public transport should be the best option, at least for the first few month. With a student monthly pass, it comes down to only $117 a month since the shuttles in Princeton and New Brunswick are free! Based on internet searches, it seems a used car would cost about $3000 with the garage check
  3. Hi! We are moving from the UK to Princeton, and we need a car (one of us will be commuting to Rutgers). What do you need in the US to buy a car? We are looking for a used car with a budget of $1500, less if possible. Do you think it is doable? Are there any "traps" to look out for when buying used cars in the US, or special registration or something? Thanks!
  4. Hi there! I'm glad I found this forum. I am French and I have always worn dresses - I absolutely hate jeans and most trousers. Skirt hardly ever look good or appropriate on me because I am quite tall. I am starting a PhD at an ivy in September, and I was rather surprised to notice that on all the research groups' photos, everyone, boys & girls, are wearing the same jeans+T-shirt combo! I am going into a heavily male orientated area as well, and I feel I will really stand out if I am the only one wearing a dress. I don't want to sound like I am complaining, but I actually was a model, and even without wearing any make-up or accessories (which I avoid like the plague), men in my professional area tend to think I am a fashion obsessed air-headed girl who cannot be trusted. My supervisor has even once commented that I was in fact much cleverer than I looked! What is your opinion/experience with this?
  5. Has anyone heard from Rutgers New Brunswick MSE PhD?
  6. I will be going for Geosciences. I am only 22 but I will be going there with my wife I think we are lucky in many ways because it seems loneliness is a big problem for many new graduate students, but I hope it will not isolate us or anything and that we will be able to make new friends. We're British as well and it will be our first time in the USA so it is all very exciting and frightening at the same time! We have applied for a studio in Lawrence. What about you? PS: She will be a new PhD student as well
  7. Hi! Anyone attending Princeton in 2011?
