Been reading these posts, some quite helpful. (for example, I did not realize that the bus is free; this changes my entire search process.) Anyway, just thought I'd drop by and say that if any of you all are in search of roomates for the fall, I am in the same boat. I've been on C-List and the UMass housing site every day, but getting very few responses. And some you those who have responded seem, well... It looks like sharing a house may be the best way to go (I've seen a fair number of ads for houses that look reasonable). PM me if you interested. Thanks. Looking forward to Western Mass!
  2. Just posted this on main board...not seeing the UMD specific thread here.. Botton line: Emailed grad sec, received reply from DGS; they hope to finalize decisions "early next week". For whatever it's worth.
  3. Emailed the grad sec., heard back from the DGS. They expect to finalize decisions "early next week". Just in case anyone cares.
  4. Yes, this did seem steep. Pardon my ignorance, but what is nominal tuition?
  5. What are typical fees for funded doctoral students? I mean that we still have to pay, despite funding. s a $350 one time fee, plus $700 per semester reasonable? (With a 15k stipend, every cent counts) Is this reasonable? What are other folks paying?
  6. To those giving advice about funding, I was just offered by a school I would like to attend; TA or RA, typical stipend, health, etc. Excited, but should I be concerned that the offer is only for 3 years? They say that other options will present themselves in years 4-5, but do I want to take them at their word so willingly? I guess I should contact students within the program to get the real lowdown. Any thoughts? Anyone have any experience with something like this? PM if you want to know specifics before advising me. Thanks.
  7. Those who have been accepted, let's discuss. What are we expecting re: funding, etc.? Who is planning on going elsewhere? Other thoughts?
  8. procrastinatrice, Considering your other acceptances, I'm assuming you are not going to UMass. What's your subfield?
  9. What's the deal with UMass funding, anyway? I hear they are only able to offer $ to a select few....hmmm. You're still waiting on Hopkins? So you were waitlisted?
  10. Anyone know what the deal is with Penn State? Obviously several folks got in a few weeks ago. Should we expect to hear something else soon?
  11. Defeatist, If you have a JD from a top school, do you really need a PhD as well? What exactly do you want to do? Teach? Your GRE is great and the JD should help, so I'm surprised you struck out altogether. But you shot pretty high. Why not try some places like JHU or WUSTL...just to name few. Still top tier and competitive, but maybe you'd have a better shot. Dunno, though. The whole thing is really random, honestly.
  12. Big Cheese, Do you think this is a 100% guarantee that all those who did not hear are out? I assume so. Thoughts?
  13. procrastinatrice, I have the feeling that JHU may be done. Just my gut, though. What's your intended focus there? Any thoughts on when we'll hear from UMass?
  14. Sonnyday, when were you waitlisted at JHU? Did you post this in results? Curious for obvious reasons. Thx
  15. Where is JHU results page? Can somebody help me out with a link? Thx
  16. jackass-Thanks for the input. Your accepted list is a bit funny...PLEASE tell me you're going to Harvard.
  17. natofone- thanks for the reply (although you are more optimistic than I re my profile). Good advice on the MA front, though I don't think I can swing the $. Check this out; I've been thinking about possibly enrolling at one of the schools to which I applied (if I get in w/ $) and then transferring after getting an MA. (esp. if I can get in done in a year or so) Is this kosher? Does anyone ever do this? (I just figure this way I can save the $, but still hopefully make a step up to a top program.) twright- thanks for the honest input. indeed good to run into another JP'er. Out of curiosity, where are you headed? (if you know) Leftcoast-ditto on running into another flawed applicant:-) I just hope we don't bump each other out of a spot at one of those three (although you can take Oregon if you want, I've got fingers crossed for UMass. And we both may be need divine int. for UMD) Best of luck.
  18. First of all, I am not in the same stratosphere as most of the folks posting here, so this post may be an unwanted nuisance; my apologies in advance; My profile: Magna cum laude Faculty Scholar, College of Arts & Sciences President
