I confess I got off to a late start in preparing my SOP but am hoping you guys can help me out. The conditions are: "The Statement of Purpose is your chance to explain your reasons for wanting to do the course, your future plans or any other information about yourself you find relevant to the application that is not included in your CV or anywhere else in the application materials. The statement should be no longer than one side of A4."
I have posted mine below. I know it needs work but am hoping the feedback will set me off in the right direction. Really appreciate this! Thank you!
Despite being the daughter of a civil servant, I must confess I learnt my lessons on economics from my grandmother who spent her whole life in a tiny hamlet deep in Eastern India. With access to limited resources, it was an art to watch her balance the delicate equilibrium of supply and demand. From ensuring the required supply of products in her tiny tuck shop to negotiating the right price for the cartload of grains to the farmer’s market, she dealt with these matters with the finesse of seasoned economist and trained lawyer.
Years have passed now. As a corporate lawyer from one of the fastest growing markets in the world, I have learnt what my grandmother already knew. Finance and law are no longer exclusive fields. With economies emerging as well as merging, it is important that we are able to provide a regulatory framework that is able to handle the pressure without testing international relations.
To achieve my true potential as a social engineer, I have realised that a multi-disciplinary approach is needed. The relevance as well as importance of knowledge of economics is crucial especially with the developing inter-links among the concerned fields. Though one may be aware of current economic affairs through the various media avenues, it is imperative to examine as well as understand how the business world is influenced by law and economics together under an international regulatory mechanism.
I have been focused regarding my career goals which lead me to tailor my choices around corporate law. Although managing financial matters has always been an integral part of my legal internships, it was post my banking experience that I felt I could further develop my keen interest by integrating a better understanding of economics. I feel the University program on Law and Finance will provide me with the right balance of both. Paraphrasing Anton Chekhov, this course would not only grant me the knowledge but also teach me the right way to practice it.
While the past two years have seen me experience the versatility of law through my two online portals, the importance of knowing the functioning of the markets has not lessened. In fact, as my goals grow regarding my role in the rising corporate India, I realise change as well as growth are inevitable. My current experience in running the two portals made me become conscious of the practical money-related issues companies may face.
I feel the teaching atmosphere will not only give a broaden mindset but also improve my education by exposing me to the workings of other financial systems. As future contributor to society, I feel this experience will make my voice carry weight. I intend to use my experience at the University and reflect it in the positive policy making decisions of my country.
My specialized experience along with my extensive legal background will allow me to function well within the graduate program. Though I plan to specialise in commercial matters, this degree will equip me with many choices as well as ambitions. Knowledge is an insatiable quality so with the little knowledge I posses, my simple desire is to learn more. The degree through its comprehensive insight and skill enrichment will ultimately ensure I am a successful and innovative professional contributing positively through my learning.
