Statement of Purpose As a corporate lawyer in one of the fastest growing markets in the world, the close bond between finance and law becomes evident every day. With economies emerging as well as merging, it is important that we are capable of providing a regulatory framework that is able to handle the pressure of these interlinked fields without testing international relations. This becomes vital when even local events can cause ripples in international markets. To achieve my true potential as a legal representative of current societal demands, I have realised that a multi-disciplinary approach is needed that reflects the accurate unification of law and economics. The relevance as well as importance of knowledge of financial side of any country is crucial particularly with the deep impact it has on the psyche of the society and influence on the existing legal scenario. The recent economic upheaval bears witness to this statement. We all saw immediate reforms in all countries’ legal system to counter the downturn spiralling of not only their economy but also other countries. As the world slowly recovers from the recessionary aftermath, it is imperative to examine as well as understand the influence of law and economics on national and international affairs. I have been focused regarding my career goals. This led me to tailor my choices around corporate law during Law School. It was during my stint in the International Banking Group at the bank when I felt I should further widen my skill set by integrating a better understanding of economics. In my role at the bank, working with numbers was an everyday affair. However, due to the deemed limitations of a lawyer, the intricacies involving the structuring of capital of the operation was always decided by the finance department. I confess this made me feel very inadequate as a legal counsel. My current role ranges from advising small start-ups to dealing with funding concerns for the portals. With closer association with financial matters every day, the importance of knowing the functioning of the markets has only increased. As my ultimate goal is to forge a career in the banking and finance industry and have the opportunity to pass on my new found knowledge to future lawyers in India, it becomes my duty to ensure I educate myself in the best possible manner. Hence, I am confident in taking this decision of applying to the prestigious Master program on Law and Finance at the University because the program will fulfil my need to make my legal learning and proficiency more comprehensive. The programme is fitting for legal counsels such as me who seek an improved insight of financial management while being acknowledged for their legal background. By addressing the deficiency which lawyers face today, the University will not only grant me the precise knowledge but also teach me the right way to practice it. Furthermore, I am eager to experience the teaching atmosphere of the University which will not only broaden my mindset but also mould me as a global citizen by exposing me to a diverse yet like-minded student body. As a contributor to society, I feel this enlightening experience will be my comings of age as a well-rounded corporate lawyer. My specialized experience as an entrepreneur along with my extensive legal background will allow me to function well within the graduate program. I am a hardworking and diligent student with the simple desire is to learn more. The degree through its comprehensive insight and aptitude enrichment will ultimately ensure I am a successful and innovative professional contributing wholly to the public through my edification.

I confess I got off to a late start in preparing my SOP but am hoping you guys can help me out. The conditions are: "The Statement of Purpose is your chance to explain your reasons for wanting to do the course, your future plans or any other information about yourself you find relevant to the application that is not included in your CV or anywhere else in the application materials. The relevance as well as importance of knowledge of economics is crucial especially with the developing inter-links among the concerned fields. Though one may be aware of current economic affairs through the various media avenues, it is imperative to examine as well as understand how the business world is influenced by law and economics together under an international regulatory mechanism. Although managing financial matters has always been an integral part of my legal internships, it was post my banking experience that I felt I could further develop my keen interest by integrating a better understanding of economics. I feel the University program on Law and Finance will provide me with the right balance of both. Paraphrasing Anton Chekhov, this course would not only grant me the knowledge but also teach me the right way to practice it. While the past two years have seen me experience the versatility of law through my two online portals, the importance of knowing the functioning of the markets has not lessened. In fact, as my goals grow regarding my role in the rising corporate India, I realise change as well as growth are inevitable. My current experience in running the two portals made me become conscious of the practical money-related issues companies may face. I feel the teaching atmosphere will not only give a broaden mindset but also improve my education by exposing me to the workings of other financial systems. As future contributor to society, I feel this experience will make my voice carry weight. I intend to use my experience at the University and reflect it in the positive policy making decisions of my country. My specialized experience along with my extensive legal background will allow me to function well within the graduate program. Though I plan to specialise in commercial matters, this degree will equip me with many choices as well as ambitions. Knowledge is an insatiable quality so with the little knowledge I posses, my simple desire is to learn more.
