  1. lizzy - congrats, you must be thrillllllled. if you don't mind me asking, where did you get in? sorry to be asking if you don't want to spill the beans. it just gives some of us an idea of which schools are still notifying.
  2. as far as i know, those contacted were given offers, but i also think the process is not quite complete yet. it's a strange year, and depending on who accepts/declines, i think they have a waiting list. there are less than 10 fellowships this year, so they're doing things a little differently from previous years...i think. i noticed you've also applied for history phd's. how's that going and which of the disciplines would you prefer. i know i was a little confused about which dept to apply to as well, thought about comp lit and his of conciousness programs, but ended up with anthro.
  3. hey there - i know they've notified some students via phone calls, but i'm not sure if that's just the students who have direct contacts in the department. if i were you, i'd go with what the prof you emailed said. if he didn't mention anything about a rejection, they're probably still deliberating over some students. i'm sure if they had decided, he would have told you more. good luck!
  4. reinventing anthropology - edited volume by dell hymes. this book changed my life. i also really like james siegal and paul ricouer . geertz is always great to read. and despite disagreements with the content of geertz' work, the man writes some poetic prose. other stuff is from psychoanalysis, cult studies, lit and phil but again changed my relationship to anthro. amongst them, a bunch of camus, zizek, lacan, benjamin, constant, arendt, marx and freud. the first time i read fanon, i remember pretty much weeping.
  5. medianerd - that's terrible, but honestly, probably a good indication of how lax the dept can be. anyhow, if they were unable to reach you through email, they should have tried to call! nightmare scenario, really.
  6. thank you, miratrix, for that uplifting observation. hah.
  7. i want fries and a salad. sound a little contradictory? someone needs psychoanalyze our food choices given our mental state. then again, considering the whole contagious burrito craving....maybe not. i'm happy to be in good spirits for now.
  8. powerless is exactly the word that describes this feeling. a good friend of mine gave me some advice that has recently helped me out a lot. he said just let it go, and let things unfold and come to you. the fact is, regardless of whether we concede (by letting go) or remain anxious, things are to unfold at their own pace in their own directions. he ended the conversation with "embrace the pain". sounds fluffy, but i need some of that fluffy in my life right now.
  9. thanks so much anthcat. i need good vibes. this is such a nerve wracking time.
  10. did anyone else get a feeler phone call from faculty last week?
  11. i just spoke to someone in the anthro dept at columbia and they said that decisions will take another 2 weeks at least. i think i need yoga in my life.
  12. hey anthcat - a combination of factors drew me to columbia. resonances with a number of faculty who are trained anthropologists and those trained in other disciplines but teaching in the anthro department . faculty in departments outside of anthro (mealac, english, comp lit, phil), as well as student interests/research. importantly, i also love nyc. how about you?
  13. anyone else waiting to hear back from columbia? historically, they seem to take the longest to make admissions decisions, so i figured there ought to be a special topic for those of us in waiting .
  14. thanks tonights, i figured they'd take their time. have i mentioned that this whole process sucks. a weird rhythm to life these days, oscillating between moments of extreme confidence and extreme self doubt.
  15. for those who applied to columbia anthro - does anyone know when we can expect to hear word. I think they tend to finalize decisions in march, but was wondering if anyone has heard otherwise......
